Report of the Constitution and Canons Committee – 2015 Synopsis of Proposed Amendments to the Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma

The Constitution and Canons Committee (“We”) regularly proposes amendments to the Diocesan Canons to maintain their currency and effectiveness. We are proposing an amendment to implement canonical changes from the recently concluded 78th General Convention. We are also proposing changes to address issues that have arisen since the last amendments, to improve readability and to conform usage. Descriptions of the proposed amendments follow. The Diocesan Canons are marked to show the proposed amendments. A parenthetical reference identifies the General Convention resolution, which is the source of the proposed amendment. The parenthetical references are for convenience only and are not part of the proposed amendments.

Amendments Implementing Resolutions from the 78th General Convention. One of the notable changes in the 78th General Convention was the adoption for trial use of same-gender marriage rites. The new liturgies include a gender-neutral revision of the 1979 marriage rite and a revision of the 2012 “Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant”. Obvious changes in language were required. References to “man and woman” or “husband and wife” were changed to “these persons” or “the couple”. Surprisingly, these liturgical changes had little impact on the Diocesan Canons. One section deals with marriage. We are proposing that the phrase “solemnization of Holy Matrimony” be updated to the “celebration and blessing of marriage”. We also propose stating that a clergy member may decline to bless a marriage. This accommodation was included within the General Convention’s adopting resolution. No other resolutions from the General Convention required changes to the Diocesan Canons.

Other Amendments to the Diocesan Canons. We are proposing other amendments to the Diocesan Canons. In several places, the Canons refer to majority votes without specifying whether the majority is those present and voting or those eligible to vote. We follow Robert’s Rules of Order in clarifying that the majority is presumably those present and voting, except in extraordinary cases such as amendments to the Diocesan Constitution or statutory events, such as mergers and dissolutions.

The Canons require that missions and institution obtain prior Diocesan approval of any amendments to their certificates of incorporation or bylaws (their constituent documents). This requirement applied by implication to parishes as well, but the application was not explicit in the Canons. We propose adding language to make the requirement explicit. We have also clarified the responsibilities of a parish that becomes a mission and the replacement of a vicar.

Conforming, Non-Substantive Amendments. Making more significant changes gives us the opportunity to change language that we might otherwise abide. We are proposing several changes that we believe improve the readability of the Canons and conform word usage. For example, several sections use the legalism “shall be deemed”, which we have eliminated. Similarly, we have changed another legalism, “including without limitation”, to simply “including”. We have conformed references to “entitled to vote” to the more standard “eligible to vote”. We have changed “inhibition” to “admonition” to conform to General Canon usage. Conforming amendments are made to reflect dates of adoption and revision, to update convention references, to renumber canons and sections, and to update the table of contents.

Model Parish Bylaws. The Committee maintains a model form for parish bylaws, which is available for download on the Diocesan website (www.episcopaloklahoma.org/). The model form is intended to encourage congregations to maintain current bylaws and to facilitate compliance with the Diocesan Canons, Church Canons and other applicable law. The model form is not intended to prescribe uniformity. The annotations indicate when a provision is mandatory due to canonical or legal requirements. Other provisions can be altered to conform to parish practices. Bracketed language appears throughout the model form suggesting choices that a congregation might make. The annotations should be removed in a congregation’s adopted bylaws. Under Oklahoma law, the vestry (or a mission’s bishop’s committee) adopts the bylaws by a majority vote.

The Committee encourages input about the Diocesan Canons and its work.

2015 Convention Report on Oklahoma Council on Indian Ministry:

The Oklahoma Council on Indian Ministry (OCIM) is the oldest Indian outreach council in the

national Episcopal Church. Our prime mission is to serve Indian ministry needs, provide education

regarding Native American/Alaska Native issues and spread the Gospel to Native Americans in the

Diocese of Oklahoma.

A prime goal for 2015/2016 will be the development through social media to disseminate

information regarding Native American activities throughout the Diocese, comprise a list of Episcopal

Native Americans, and gather names of others who have an interest in Indian Ministry. The

Cherokee Scholarship Committee continues to offer annual undergraduate scholarship support for

qualified enrolled female members of the Cherokee Nation. Interested students should contact

Heather Knowles, Chairperson at [email protected] for information.

With the departure in 2014 of the Indian Missioner, Bishop Ed assigned Deacon Pat

Gonzales as the Deacon in Charge of The Whirlwind Mission of the Holy Trinity in Watonga,

Oklahoma. Deacon Gonzales, a member of the Kiowa Nation, lives in Watonga and it is a pleasure

to report that the Mission has increased membership, added several baptisms and is developing a

strong youth presence. With support from St. Paul’s Cathedral five youth members attended St.

Crispin’s summer camp and requests are already coming in to attend in summer 2016.

On September 5th, the 29th Annual Oakerhater Honor Dance was held at the Whirlwind

Mission. Bishop Ed celebrated a Holy Eucharist and preached regarding David Pendleton

Oakerhater’s lifelong service to the Episcopal Church in western Oklahoma. Deacon Pendleton was

ordained a Deacon in 1875 and continued his ministry until his death in 1931. This Cheyenne

Warrior who accepted Christianity led an exemplary life among his people and was added to the

calendar of Holy Men/Holy Women in 1985. Known as “God’s Warrior”, his Feast Day is celebrated

the closest Sunday to the 1st of September. Following the Holy Eucharist, a dinner was held and a

Powwow followed with dancing until well after midnight. Approximately 250 people attended the

celebration. The dance spreads the message of the Oklahoma Council for Indian Ministry.

With the commitment to enlarge our circle among Episcopalians who are interested in

Native American ministry, we welcome your ongoing support and prayers. If you have interest or

questions, please contact Buzz McDonald, Chairperson OCIM at 405-246-6072 or

[email protected].

Yours in Christ, Buzz McDonald, Chair, OCIM

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN 2015 OUR MISSION: We are Sisters in Christ. We are every Episcopal Woman lay or ordained. We are committed to prayer, listening, leadership, study, service, giving and fellowship. The Episcopal Church Women's organization is comprised of all women of the church. The absence of a formal organized women's group within individual churches does not preclude the women in that church from membership in this state-wide organization. The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Oklahoma offers programs throughout the year for the women of this diocese and their guests. Examples of these offerings include our Women's retreats – held twice a year. In addition to our retreats, programs are presented in the regions of the diocese. Our Annual Conference & Bishop's Day brings women together from around Oklahoma for prayer, education and fellowship. In years preceding the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, women elect delegates to represent our state at the Triennial of the Episcopal Church Women which meets concurrently with General Convention. This past June, Debbie Butcher, Fran Rahn, Jeannie Haas and Bebe Dotter traveled to Salt Lake City for this event. Retreats held in Spring and Fall at St. Crispin's Conference Center are well attended by Episcopal Women. They have also served as an excellent opportunity for outreach as attendees often recruit women from outside the Episcopal Church to join them for spiritual renewal and study offered at these events. Our Devotional Life chair, The Reverend Debora Jennings has continued to instruct and entertain with topics and activities very popular with our members and guests. For our Spring retreat women arrive early to St. Crispin's to celebrate “the work of our hands” as colorful pillowcases are produced for the campers of New Hope to remind those children of incarcerated parents that they are loved and valued. Episcopal Women support many ministries within the state and across the nation. Annually we publish our yearbook. The “Blue Book” distributed to all clergy, churches and diocesan leaders catalogs organized ECWs, key women, churches and the diocesan structure. In addition, women of the church support the greater community including New Hope, Whirlwind Mission, United Thank Offering, Church Periodical Club and others. This past year at our Annual Conference & Bishop's Day in Ponca City, the ECW presented $5,000 to St. Crispin's for their expansion program. Members of the ECW board traveled to St. Crispin's to treat camp staff to luncheon in between camp sessions. Grace Church in Ponca City hosted our Annual Conference & Bishop's Day this past April. Our

theme was “Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening.”Our keynote speaker was The Rev. Lee Stephens from Bartlesville. Presentations throughout the weekend were directed at renewal and emphasized the personal side of spirituality. The women of Grace Church pulled out all the stops and provided us with a memorable experience. Worship led by Bishop Ed, Debora Jennings, Dee Bright and Lee Stephens was enriching and well-received. We have just recently jump-started our website. Christina Thurber is our new webmaster. She's always looking for upcoming events from your parish to post on the ECW website. Contact her to let the rest of the diocese know what the women are doing in your church. Access from the website of the diocese and check out up-coming events for Oklahoma's Episcopal Church Women. We use the weekly electronic newsletter from our diocese. Keep track of the movers and shakers in the ECW for this year with our notices that come to your email box from the diocese. In April of 2016, St. Paul's Cathedral in Oklahoma City will host our Annual Conference & Bishop's Day. The women of St. Paul's are already planning wonderful program and activities for all who will attend. Mark your calendars to be in Oklahoma City April 29-30 to experience all that Episcopal Church Women have to offer for Oklahoma. It's our mission in the upcoming years to bring more women into the fold and introduce them to the opportunities for fellowship and growth that our events provide. We encourage individual churches with organized groups of women or churches just beginning to organize to contact us and we'd love to help in any way we can.

St. Crispin’s Episcopal Conference Center

Nestled in the rolling oak covered hills of Seminole County, St. Crispin’s Episcopal Conference Center is loved by all who visit. A centerpiece of the mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, St. Crispin’s has provided a restful place for individuals and groups for over 50 years.

St. Crispin’s Mission is to provide a peaceful space for all guests where they will experience hospitality, nourishment and an opportunity to grow in the grace of God.

Under the St. Crispin’s protective umbrella, we host a myriad of programs: Summer Camp, EfM, IONA, Episcopal Church Women’s Retreats, etc... are just a few. St. Crispin’s unique environment offers a respite from busy schedules and provides a place free from the pressures of day-to-day business, where creativity can blossom and you can become your best self again. On our 450 unspoiled acres of lakes, hills and forest, you can enjoy spiritual reflection and time with God during an experience never to be forgotten. Working with youth and providing kids with meaningful, fun and life changing experiences has long been a focus of St. Crispin’s. A large number of past and current leaders in the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma credit their experiences at St. Crispin’s with helping to shape their life choices and career paths. Over the past year, St. Crispin’s has served over 800 youth and their group leaders though St. Crispin’s Summer Camp, hosting camps for other churches and organizations, and hosting both Episcopal and Non-Episcopal Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and University groups from across the state. There are a number great things that have happened and are happening at St. Crispin’s:

Department of Environmental Quality has permitted the construction of the water wells that were drilled.

2015 Mission Camp enhanced the Labyrinth by lining the walkway with gravel which allows people to utilize the labyrinth after rains.

Eagle Scout project of a new Altar was built and placed in the grassy area near the Oakwood trail.

New activity areas and activities were built such as Permanent Archery Range, Sling Shot Range, new Gaga Ball pit, and Tetherball.

St. Crispin’s Mountain Biking & Hiking Trail was named the “Most Popular Trail” in Oklahoma by Single Tracks Mountain Bike website which was determined by positive trail reviews made by cyclists.

Improved and lengthened the hiking & Mountain Biking trails to almost 9 miles. We hosted a trail improvement day in September. Bikers, frequent guests, and a Boy

Scout Troop gathered to help us prepare the trails for the October race. On October 18th, we hosted the 2nd St. Crispin’s Day Massacre Mountain Bike Race.

This race was a part of the Tour de Dirt State Mountain Bike Championship series and provided great exposure for our facility and trails by bringing in riders from across Oklahoma and neighboring states.

St. Crispin’s will be hosting the Oklahoma State Fat Bike Championship race on November 14, 2015.

St. Crispin’s has been selected by the National Episcopal Camps and Conference Center’s Executive Committee to host the fall 2016 Board of Director’s and Visioning Committee meeting.

The building project is continuing to move forward and we fully anticipate the new Summer Camp buildings to be open for camp in 2016.

Mike, Daniel and I continue to feel blessed to live and work in an environment where we can use our talents. We strive to serve you and provide a setting that will encourage your personal relationships, nourish your body and soul, and nurture your spiritual growth. So whether you grew up at St. Crispin’s, attend retreats in one of the lodges, or have never had the opportunity to stay, we hope that you plan to visit soon and experience not only the beauty of St. Crispin’s, but see and experience the improvements and activities. St. Crispin’s is a place for people of all ages to grow, play, and participate in Christian formation in a safe and nurturing community. We will work hard to provide a quality, positive environment for all who choose to attend. Come experience the ministry of St. Crispin’s and feel the magic of our conference center - your home away from home. Respectfully Submitted by: Joanne Kovac-Roberts & Mike Roberts

Christian Formation – Annual Report ‐ 2015

As I begin my 2014‐15 report, I am hearing the words from the afternoon session of the 8th Legislative

Day of the House of Deputies for General Convention. It is always a joy to reflect on where we have

been and where we are going.

Just a quick note about General Convention – we are pleased to lift up John Zuk, who served as a Youth

Representative from Oklahoma for GC. We were also thrilled to be able to see/hear him speak to both

the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies.

At Diocesan Convention last year, we had a “Step Right Up Carnival Theme” held at St. Augustine’s of

Canterbury, OKC. We thank them for the hospitality. This event couldn’t have been such a success

without the help of a group of Youth Leaders from around the Diocese. From theme, meal, cooking,

activities, and ideas, we wouldn’t have been successful without their help!

It will be my privilege to present the 2nd class of the Episcopal Youth Leadership Program, who

graduated in September. Each month has brought challenges and opportunities for each of these young

people. We began in September, 2014, at St. Crispin’s. Here they were learned about small groups,

working together, and personality styles. At last year’s Diocesan Convention, they were formally

introduced and participated in a “scavenger hunt.” For many of these youth, it was their first experience

at our convention and they were able to see the church at its business. Our next gathering was at Grace,

Muskogee. Here we looked at budgets, finances, how to fill out required forms for tax purposes, etc. The

group served in all capacities of worship on Sunday. We were “snowed out” for our first trip to St.

Philip’s, Ardmore, and this was rescheduled for September, 2015. We met at St. Christopher’s, Midwest

City, to learn about planning projects and steps to make projects successful. We then prepared meals

for St. Christopher’s Mobile Meals and our supper. Each participant is to complete a project prior to the

end of our time together. In July, we gathered at the Diocesan Office to talk about the Episcopal Church,

its organization, and how our congregations fit in. We will have time with Bishop Ed, and a history lesson

of the Church. At our last meeting, we will discuss manners, appropriate eating utensils, ordering in a

restaurant, etc., Conflict Management and Forgiveness.

Graduates include: Steve Bilsbury, Zeke Brown, Kiri Holder, Emma Kane, Lauren, Kane, Susanna

LeMasters, Covell Lindstrom, Bryna Madden, Lauren Paque, and Rachel Webb.

Safeguarding God’s Children – We are pleased that our clergy may now do re‐certification on‐line. We

are also making this available to congregations who will provide an administrator to be responsible for

set‐up and contact with the Diocese on those who complete training. As of now, we have over 2,282

people trained in our Diocese.

Safeguarding God’s People – As of now, we have 550 people trained in this program. We intend to offer

more training in 2016 to help get more people trained.

Cultural Awareness – All Clergy are required to have this training. We had one training in 2015 and have

scheduled two training for 2016. We are doing some additional work on programming to establish

worships on Cultural communications.

New Beginnings –July 18‐20. This year, we are pleased to announce that Sara Colijn Wilson and Casey

Wilson will be taking this program over for 2016. We thank Kate Huston for all her hard work on this

group.

Happening – August 7‐9, St. Andrew’s, Stillwater. We want to thank Ashley Haggard for all her hard

work on this program. Ashley has moved to the Diocese of Arkansas to become a full‐time youth

minister. Philip Newcomer has agreed to step up and run this program.

Mission Camp – March 20 – 22 and was held at St. Crispin’s. Participants did work to the physical

grounds, in addition to filling the labyrinth with gravel. St. Crispin’s staff led the group on the low ropes

course, games of community building, and other areas to make camp our most loved space!

We again supported two congregations in attending in National Cathedral Acolyte Festival in

Washington, DC in October.

Summer Camp – a HUGE THANKS for all the hard work of Daniel Chapman as our new Summer Camp

Director. Our staff was taken to a new level of professionalism in their attire and training.

I again served as Dean for ABC, along with The Rev. Joseph Alsay as Chaplain.

Altered – This young adult group held a spring event out at St. Crispin’s and it was very well attended.

Education for Ministry – We again hosted a training in August for those who are mentors, or those who

would like to become mentors.

Godly Play – This has continued to be a popular curriculum in our diocese. We have helped purchase

materials for several congregations in an effort to keep the current with the latest out there. We are

planning a training for 2016 – one in OKC and one in Tulsa.

ChurchNext – We continue to support 6 congregations in using the ChurchNext materials as a part of

their Christian Formation.

Mind, Body and Spirit – Our annual event was held August 6, 2015 at St. Augustine’s. Workshops

included Christians and Loss, Lectio Divina, Making a Memory College, Talking with your Doctor, Sharing

your Story.

OK Episcopals at the Ball Park‐ August 22. It was a great game and fun to see different groups!

Bishop’s Lecture Series – Our 2nd Lecture Series was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral on September 11 and

12. Learning about personal accountability was the theme as we had discussions with and shared

resources with Kristen Lindeen, daughter of John Miller, author of QBQ (Question behind the Question).

Next year’s speaker will be Diana Butler Bass.

Youth Leader’s Retreat – This was offered the weekend of July 10 – 11 and St. Crispin’s. It was the first

Youth Leader’s event since I have been here. We brought in Sara Bailey from Ministry Architects. She has

been in youth ministry since 1993 serving Episcopal churches in Greensboro, North Carolina, as well as the

Nashville & Philadelphia areas. She has been a part of the Ministry Architects team since 2006. We had 11

youth leaders from across the diocese participate in this training.

Liturgy Festival Training and Eucharist – This event was celebrated on November 14. We had a great

turn out last year as we broadened the workshops to include different groups who are a part of Liturgy.

This year, we invited The Rev. Nathan Jennings, J. Milton Richardson Associate Professor of Liturgics and

Anglican Studies, at Seminary of the Southwest to do an introduction and then meet with Clergy. Other

workshops included, Acolytes, and Children’s Choirs.

Telling our Stories Boxes – Baptism and Eucharist – I have put together two pieces of intergenerational

work on these sacraments. It is an opportunity to “walk through the set‐up, have a hand’s on

experience, and learn something you might not have known.” If your congregation is interested in

having these materials present for either a Sunday or Wednesday night presentation, let me know. I

bring everything!

Senior Ministry ‐ The Diocesan Senior Ministry Committee offered Mind, Body, and Spirit at St.

Augustine’s, Oklahoma City. Our workshops included: Christians and Loss, Lexio Divina, Memory

Collages, Talking with your Physician, and Sharing our Story. During lunch, John Kusel, President of the

Silver Haired Legislature spoke.

They are looking forward to offering Mind, Body, and Spirit at St. John’s, Tulsa in February, and

information can be found on the Christian Formation exhibit table.

Commission on Ministry

2015 Annual Report

Over the past year members of the Commission continued to work with Bishop Konieczny and Canon

McLoughlin to coordinate our efforts to prepare people for ordained ministry. Various initiatives

include:

The Iona School of Formation, based at St. Crispin’s. The Iona School has its roots in the Iona School

for Ministry in the Diocese of Texas. At the Iona School of Formation, students gather for monthly

weekends during the academic year for three years, preparing for ordination either to the diaconate

or as bi‐vocational priests. The class that graduated on June 14, 2015 was the first to complete all

three years of their education at the Iona School of Formation at St. Crispin’s. The Rev. Clark

Shackelford and the Rev. Dr. Bill Carroll are the Deans of the Iona School of Formation.

The Discernment Program, a nine‐month program for aspirants (people who are considering the

possibility of ordained ministry). Aspirants meet monthly to examine different aspects of the

priesthood and the diaconate, in order to explore their call to ministry. Members of the Commission

on Ministry often participate in these monthly sessions. In 2014‐15, The Rev. Hal Greenwood

oversaw the Discernment Program, assisted by the Rev. Deacon Dana Orwig. In 2015‐16, Dana

Orwig works with the Rev. Joseph Alsay to facilitate the program.

The BACM (Bishop’s Advisory Council on Ministry) Weekend, an event in April of each year in

which the Commission and the Bishop meet with aspirants who have successfully completed the

Discernment Program. The goal of the BACM Weekend is to gain clarity about the aspirants’

perceived call to ordained ministry.

There are currently ## individuals in the Holy Orders process in the Diocese of Oklahoma:

‐ 12 Aspirants

‐ 5 Postulants for the bi‐vocational Priesthood

‐ 5 Postulants for full‐time Priesthood

‐ 8 Postulants for the Diaconate

This summer, after chairing the Commission on Ministry for several years, the Rev. Hal Greenwood

retired from this position. It is my privilege to succeed Hal. He brought much wisdom, grace, and insight

to his work with the Commission, and I look forward to working with the rest of the Commission in the

future.

Faithfully submitted,

The Rev. Irving Cutter

St. Crispin’s Summer Camp Director, 2015 A Sample of the Deans/Chaplains Formation Programs at St. Crispin’s

ABC Camp (K - 3rd Grade) focused on three presentations from Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The first was the Good Shepherd, and the kids all painted a sheep, the second was the Found Sheep, and they made a popsicle altar, complete with candles, cup, and paten. And finally the Good Shepherd and World Communion, where the sheep and people all come together to the table for that special meal.

Rising 4th, 5th and 6th Graders sought to experience and share God’s INVITATION, INCLUSION and WELCOME through a shared Agape Meal, using dishes, placemat and food created together throughout the week. The 3-question theme of Mthr. Elizabeth’s “table talks” were, How big is God’s table? (is it big enough for everyone?), What happens at God’s table? And who is invited to God’s table? (parallels to school lunch table). The campers each created a cup and plate, a placemat and communion bread for use in an all camp AGAPE meal, using their common prayers, as the Book of Common Prayer, all woven together.

Rising 7th and 8th Graders expanded on the idea of “Food is Love.” Eating is Love--small groups discussed the ritual of sharing meals during crucial moments. Growing is love--a guest from the OSU agricultural department came and talked about the practice of growing food and the kids planted a pumpkin patch. Cooking is love--the kids made desserts for each other and valued those who love us by preparing our meals. Security is Love--raised issues around food security and we decorated food sacks for Shawnee’s lunch program. Eucharist is love--we had a love feast around Christ’s table and celebrated his gift of redemption on the cross.

Rising 7th and 8th Graders. We studied the idea of 'radical welcome,' challenged campers to be as genuinely welcoming to one another as possible, manifesting that sentiment through activities, crafts, and small group time. What does it look like at home and school and in the broader concept of the church? We looked at what Jesus’ teachings actually tell us about welcome: that in its truest sense, it’s hard, that it must be intentional, and that it takes work. But that best of all, it’s here where our calling as followers of Jesus truly plays out.

Rising 9th and 10th Graders focused on the three-fold ideas of Invite, Welcome, Connect. Tables not only nourish our bodies, but they nourish the soul. Tables are used for fellowship and a place to get disagreements out in the open. Groups followed GPS coordinates on a scavenger hunt to meet up at the new altar in the woods by the lake. Each clue had an item used in the Eucharist. Although we were searching for Christ, we reflected on how this is never done alone.

Senior High Camp (Rising 11th, 12th and Graduates) Each liturgical season calls us to be "at the table of Christ." We re-lived each of the Church Seasons and gave examples of how each bring us to the table with family, friends and in our relationship with God (complete with lit a

Christmas tree in the woods on the “Christmas Day”). A highlight of the week was a Stations of the Cross during our "Holy Week Day: and a different family group carried the cross to each station.

2015 DAUGHTERS OF THE KING

The Order of the Daughters of the King began on Easter Eve, April 4, 1885, at the Episcopal

church of the Holy Sepulcher, now known as the Church of the Resurrection in New York City.  The

Order was founded by Margaret J. Franklin as the outgrowth of a Bible class and named Daughters of

the King.  Within seven years, fifty chapters had formed and the National Order of the Daughters of

the King was established.  By the following year, 1893, the Order’s membership had grown to 8,000

and the first national convention of the Daughters of the King was held.  Since that time, chapters

have spread throughout the world.  Today there are chapters located throughout the United States,

the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa and India.

In the Diocese of Oklahoma, there are sixteen active senior chapters at present, located in

Duncan, Durant, El Reno, Guthrie, Midwest City, Muskogee, Ponca City, Norman (two chapters),

Oklahoma City (three chapters), and Tulsa (three chapters), as well as one junior chapter at St. John’s

Church, Norman.  There are also 22 Daughters‐At‐ Large, who do not live in areas where an active

chapter is located.  Individual chapters decide their own meeting schedules to suit their group.  They

also select their own meeting style, book studies, projects, and the frequency of their meetings.

Members are encouraged to be involved on a diocesan level by attending the annual Spring

Assembly, hosted each year by a different chapter, and an annual fall retreat held at St. Crispin’s

each October.

Formation of a chapter requires the consent of the priest or pastor of the church and a

minimum of three women who are communicants in good standing in the Episcopal Church, the

Anglican Church, the Lutheran Church (ECLA) or the Roman Catholic Church, and who desire to

commit themselves to a life of prayer and service.  Membership is granted only after a period of

study using our National Study Guide, and followed by a period of discernment and prayer.  At the

end of this time, with the approval of her priest, the candidate may take life‐time vows, binding

herself to a Rule of Life which encompasses daily prayer, service and evangelism.  After she takes her

vows, the Daughter wears the cross of the Order, as an outward sign and constant reminder of the

vows she has taken.  Because of our vows, our bylaws prohibit us from raising funds.  We may only

make personal offerings from what we have been blessed to receive.

Any priest or group of women in Oklahoma who is interested in forming a chapter is invited

to contact the Diocesan President of Daughters of the King.  I will be most happy to discuss your

ideas, supply an assortment of brochures about Daughters, and assist your church in forming its own

chapter of Daughters of the King.

2015 St. Anselm of Canterbury Annual Report

The Episcopal Church of Oklahoma is committed to the lifelong formation of Christians throughout the Diocese, and the ministry of St. Anselm of Canterbury is an important part of that mission. Campus ministry is uniquely positioned to be a guidepost at one of the most important crossroads of adulthood.

Canterbury has been blessed with a wonderful group of young adults who have grown up knowing the strength of intentional Christian community in the Diocese of Oklahoma through our retreats and camp program.  This provides an amazing foundation for reaching out to and providing a landing spot for college students who may not feel comfortable in other traditional college communities such as Fraternities and Sororities or some of the bigger Christian organizations.  This has allowed us to really become an incredibly diverse group of faithful people.  Episcopal, ELCA, Missouri Synod Lutheran, Presbyterian, Baptist, Unitarian, Deaf, Spectrum Disorder, LGBT, Single Mother, Conservative, Liberal, Undergrad, Graduate Students.  All are welcome and have found a safe place to love God within the walls of St. Anselm of Canterbury.

St. Anselm’s motto, Faith Seeking Understanding, undergirds everything we do from worship to Christian education.  Sunday evenings you will find 20 of us worshipping from the Book of Common Prayer and singing out of the Hymnal to the organ.  You will find us in discussion about the lectionary, seeking to understand the Word in a way that informs our modern context.  Wednesday evenings is Canterbury Compline at 9:30 and proceeded by Explore, our weekly Christian Education offering where we take a look at the intersection of college life and faith.  This past year we tackled subjects like The Role of Alcohol in the Episcopal Church, Addiction, Faith and Sex, Discernment, Pacifism, Materialism, and What is Grace, Modernism and Its Role in the Church to name a few.  The participation has been wonderful with anywhere from 15‐20 students showing up each week.  We also have weekly bible studies and noonday prayer, all in an attempt to provide opportunities for young adults to live into their faith.

This past year we also expanded our footprint in the life of the college.  We hosted prayer services throughout the year for various student organizations such as Sooners Against Sweatshops as well as numerous days of remembrance and prayer vigils following the tragedy in the AME church.  We also participated in events with other faith organizations like the Catholic Campus Ministry in the Way of the Cross, a campus wide Stations of the Cross.  We also invited the African American Studies department to joins us in celebrating the feast day for Absalom Jones.

One of the hardest parts of campus ministry is saying goodbye, but it happens each and every year.  This past year we graduated several of our leaders at Canterbury, Emily Bibens is now in a program called City Year in Tulsa which seeks to keep at risk students engaged in learning and on track to graduate and Brooke Holleman is pursuing her Masters degree at the Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs in Austin, Texas. We couldn’t be more proud of the ministry and leadership they are continuing after college.

2015 St Augustine Canterbury Center at Oklahoma State University

Ministry to the Campus

● Wednesday evening Eucharist/dinner. An informal Eucharist (at 5:30pm) held at the Canterbury Center followed by a meal provided by a St Andrew’s parishioner. Attendance has increased.

● Sunday evening fellowship. We meet at the Canterbury Center 5:30PM to discuss current issues, the role faith plays in our public and private lives, and whatever else comes up. We share a meal provided by a St Andrew’s parishioner before closing our evening with compline, evening prayer, or night prayer. So far we are averaging 12-15 students and parishioners for fellowship and we have no reason to believe that number will not continue to grow

● A place to meet and study. At any given moment, chances are we have students hanging out, studying, eating leftovers, catching up on their favorite shows on Netflix, playing ping pong or pool, or even taking a nap. Our location is perfect for those with breaks in their daily schedule.

● Hosting meetings. Currently we host the horn studio of one of the instructors at OSU, an a capella group composed of OSU voice students, and the monthly meeting of Stillwater’s PFLAG chapter. We are hoping to expand our hospitality to other groups and organizations.

● Ashes to Go. On Ash Wednesday this year we posted ourselves outside the student union offering a brief service of prayer, psalm readings, and imposition of ashes. 35+ students and faculty took time to share in the service.

● Lights on Stillwater. We have participated the last several years in this annual showcase of local businesses, churches, and campus organizations. It’s a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to new students. This year we handed out koozies with the new Canterbury Center logo. They were a hit!

● Finals week brunch. During finals week the past several semester the Canterbury Center has offered our “You’re almost done with finals brunch!” The turnout has grown and it’s been a great opportunity for our regular students to invite friends. We served more than 30 people!

● Game night. Enough said.

Canterbury/St Andrew’s shared ministry

● students joined the Lenten soup and supper series at St Andrew’s in lieu of meeting at our regular time.

● many students are active in the life of St Andrew’s including helping with childcare, singing in the choir, lay reading, working at the Thrift Shop, and attendance on Sunday mornings.

● More than 20 families from St Andrew’s have signed up to provide meals for Canterbury program on Wednesday and Sunday throughout the semester!

Ministry Partners

● We are grateful for the continued support of the St Andrew’s Thrift Shop, whose support annually helps offset operating expenses

● Thank you to the Diocese and this convention for supporting our ministry financially and enabling this important ministry

● Thank you to the support and excitement from the people of St Andrew’s as we continue this new chapter of shared ministry.

● Finally, thank you to all of the parishes and missions in the Diocese of Oklahoma for raising up such wonderful students. So far this year we have students from St. John’s in Tulsa, St. James in Wagoner, St. Matthew’s in Enid, Trinity Tulsa, St. Paul’s in OKC, St. Mary’s in Edmond, St. Andrew’s in Stillwater and St. Mark’s in Little Rock, not to mention students of other denominations looking for a new home. Please keep us in the loop when you have a graduate heading our way.

We’d love to hear from you!

2015 Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 829)

Giving feet, hands, hearts and minds to the words of this prayer for young people are the member schools of the Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools. The OCES supports the work of the Church through its member schools. The commission meets regularly during the academic year to provide mutual cooperation and support among the member schools. The OCES provides assistance to the Bishop and Diocesan Council for insuring that member schools adhere to diocesan standards. New faces that have appeared in leadership roles since our last report include:

Nathan Sheldon-Head of Casady School, Oklahoma City

Beth Kelly-Head of St. John’s School, Oklahoma City

Amy Venable-Chaplain at Holland Hall School, Tulsa

The commission is comprised of the following six schools, all meeting the diocesan standards for certification:

Casady (Oklahoma City) Holland Hall (Tulsa) Oak Hall (Ardmore)St. John’s (Oklahoma City)

St. Mary’s (Edmond)St Dunstan’s (Tulsa)

The OCES is a certifying agency, not an accrediting agency. The OCES strongly encourages all certified schools to seek accreditation and/or to meet the standards of one area, state or national agency to insure safe, nurturing environments for our young people. Every school in the OCES is dedicated to encouraging academics and creativity. We concentrate on the physical, emotional and spiritual development of our children. We urge you to please come visit our wonderful campuses!

The Rev. Arthur Scrutchins, OCES Chair

Prison Missioner’s Advance Report to 2015 Diocesan Convention on behalf of the

  Commission on Prison Ministry

The mission of the Commission on Prison Ministry is to bring the reconciliation, redemptive grace and

their detention, and to others at risk for or affected by the criminal justice system; so that people may be

of our society at large.

Thanks to your continuing support, for many years the Diocese has sponsored St. Patrick’s Community

of Prison Congregations—an outreach ministry that leads ten worshiping communities, and also

prison ministers operate in four geographically‐based ministry teams that reach out to residents in

correctional facilities across the State.  A few of our congregations engage in ministry with ex‐prisoners.

for children of prisoners aged 5 through 18, designed to break the cycle of generational incarceration.

Also, a few Episcopalians engage in individual ministries of advocacy for Restorative Justice, working for

Education and Advocacy for Restorative Justice

Most people who become actively engaged in prison ministry eventually gain, through that experience, a

newly‐acquired perception that moves them toward advocacy for criminal justice reform.  And in

response, some individual Episcopalians have created effective advocacy ministries.  For example,

Commission Member John Pearson helped to organize the Oklahoma Public Safety/Justice Policy Council

Saint Simeon’s Report – Diocese Convention 2015

Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home in Tulsa continues its tradition of excellent care for over 55 years. We are the preferred home for men and women of all faiths who wish to live their later years in an environment with dignity, individuality and the highest attainable level of independence. We offer eight levels of care: Independent Living, four levels of Assisted Living, Memory Care, Health Care, and Skilled Nursing. Saint Simeon’s is home to 180

Residents and employs 200 people.

This year, Saint Simeon’s has undergone the completion of an infrastructure renovation to the Memory Center. Critical plumbing improvements have allowed for the continued operation of our six home units in the Memory Center, creating a safe and secure environment for our 64 Memory Center Residents.

Also this year, one wing of Saint Simeon’s has been re-branded to more properly describe its function. The wing was formerly referred to as “D-Wing,” since our former Assisted Living building was located next to it, and conjoined by A, B, and C wings. When the old Assisted Living building was torn down in 2009 and Dotson Family Assisted Living Center was erected in its place, only the D-Wing remained. That wing, which offers 16 rooms with a high level of Assisted Living care, has been rebranded as “Assisted Living Plus,” offering the highest level of Assisted Living in the Tulsa area. The rebranding has resulted in almost 100% occupancy in that area, up from 56% occupancy at the beginning of the year. Assisted Living Plus is able to accommodate some individuals who may require nursing home care at another facility. An exciting new addition to the Saint Simeon’s campus this year was the installation of the Marilynn Lane Memorial Butterfly Garden. Mrs. Lane, who was a former Resident of Saint Simeon’s, was honored by her husband Don, whose generous

gift made the butterfly garden possible. The Butterfly Garden adds even more color and life to Saint Simeon’s already vibrant Gazebo Courtyard. The garden is complete with a metal butterfly bench designed by Lisa Regan of Garden Deva and plants and flowers that are known to attract butterflies. Additionally, Darin Berryhill of Berryhill Ornamental Iron created a trellis for the garden.

Saint Simeon’s continues to enjoy partnerships with local Episcopalian churches. In April, a group from St. John’s Episcopal Church visited Saint Simeon's for a lunch in our Bistro and a presentation by Sue Slama, Director of Nursing. Saint Simeon’s staff is always eager to share knowledge of senior health topics with local Episcopalian parishes.

The Saint Simeon’s Foundation hosted its 19th Annual Western Days. Western Days 2015: Celebrating Saint Simeon’s, Where Caring Really Matters, raised over $500,000 and was attended by more than 700 guests. The September 15, 2015 evening featured live and silent auctions, as well as live musical entertainment.

It has been an eventful, successful year for Saint Simeon’s. It is, however, the heart of our mission to provide daily care to frail and elderly individuals. Our success is measured in large part by the responses we receive from Residents and family members. Letters such as the following, written to our President & CEO, Lindsay Hurley Fick, are the most telling feedback we receive as a senior care community:

Dear Ms. Fick,

After my mother passed away, I knew it was time to move Dad closer to me. As an only child, I’m very concerned about the quality of care my father receives. After a great deal of searching, it seemed only Saint Simeon’s offered the level of care I want for Dad. Saint Simeon’s has met and exceeded all of my expectations and offers a consistency in staff. The staff members have

become like family to him. People like Dr. Mary Nole in the Wellness Center see my dad almost every day and are committed to keeping him healthy. If at some point his condition requires a higher level of nursing care, he won’t have to leave Saint Simeon’s.

I cannot thank you enough for the peace of mind you and all of the staff members at Saint Simeon’s have given me. You are a true God-send!

Sincerely,

Lori Strickland

Saint Simeon’s is proud to continue its 55th year as a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and is grateful for the continued support of the Diocese.

THE ARDMORE VILLAGE

A brief history for those who may not be acquainted with the Ardmore Village. Phase 1 of Ardmore Village included the construction of 54 single-story cottages arranged in four-plexes. Each centrally heated and air-conditioned cottage has its own kitchen, living area, bedroom and bath and is furnished with a range and refrigerator. Laundry facilities and a centrally located community building – Village Hall at 2401 Village Lane – were part of the first level of construction.

Phase 2 saw the addition of 38 more cottages in 1986, followed by a 20-unit apartment complex in 1989, a larger community building – The Creative Living Center (currently renamed The Sutton Center) – in 1996, and a 54-suite assisted-living residence named The Lodge at Ardmore Village in 2002. All of these facilities are located on an 18-acre campus in northeast Ardmore, and includes 16 two-bedroom townhomes one block over on Shenandoah Drive.

Change is inevitable! The biggest change for 2015 so far has been the addition of our new Executive Director, Randy McFarland. Randy joined the Village team June 1, 2015. Randy has lived in the Ardmore area since 2003 and has been working in area nursing homes as Social Services Director, and for the past eight years as a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. Randy is excited to be a part of the leadership team at the Ardmore Village and to continue the work of providing affordable quality living for Senior Adults.

In January the Village was recognized on the Ardmore Business Honor Roll for 30 years in business. The Village/Lodge also received the Daily Ardmoreite’s Reader’s Choice award for best Senior Care in 2015. Second year in a row to receive that recognition!

In February the Village hosted a Chamber of Commerce event called “Business after Hours.” Local dignitaries and members of the Chamber of Commerce who attended were treated to snacks and drinks and heard about the Village and the services offered to Senior Adults.

In June the Village hosted a first ever campus wide yard sale. Hot dogs and drinks were provided. Probably more eating and visiting took place than selling but all had a good time!

The Ardmore Village is a United Way Agency. As such the Village both receives funds from the United Way and helps raise funds. Kirbi Blankenship is the Village Activities Director and the United Way representative for the Village. This year at our annual fund raiser in August families paid $10 each to enjoy three hours at the local water park. The Village cleared $917.00 and was the first United Way participant to turn in their money! The staff donated $1,667.00. The residents will have fund raisers and add to the amount given to support United Way causes in the Ardmore area.

This year the Village received a $20,000 grant that will allow for a makeover of the common area in our apartment complex. New cabinets, refrigerator, dishwasher and a microwave will be installed. Currently the work has yet to be completed but hopefully will be by the end of this year. The residents who call the Apartments “home” enjoy getting together for bingo, Friday evening snacks and a movie, and more. The makeover will provide a nice area to assist in their merry making!

We are looking forward to the Holiday season. It is always a festive time with lots of activities planned both for the residents and for the community to come see what the Ardmore Village is all about.

Randy McFarland, Director

September 2015

Dear Diocesan Convention,

Holland Hall began our 94th year of continuous operation and our 57th as an Episcopal school serving students in and around the Tulsa area, as well as students from around the world, this August. With growing enrollments in our middle and upper school branches, a strategic plan in place, a successful reaccreditation process with the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest, and a capital campaign in the making, we are delighted to continue to share the Episcopal tradition of an open, inclusive community that values the dignity and worth of every human being in our midst with our students, their families, and the broader Tulsa community.

Much is shared in the education and parenting worlds about the importance of instilling the virtues of tenacity and resiliency in our children. Holland Hall could not agree more. These virtues are deeply ingrained in our work with students and families beginning at the earliest ages. To achieve the aspirations outlined in our mission—critical thinking, lifelong learning, forming a strong moral foundation, and developing a deep sense of social responsibility in a college prep curriculum—a child must have a cadre of adults and positive peers present to offer support and encouragement. But what’s often missing from the conversation is the importance of a spiritual relationship—one that looks both inward and outward. Not just Holland Hall, but all Episcopal schools are ably crafted to offer the presence of a spiritual community that fosters transcendent connections in the presence of our relationships as well as through spiritual insight.

So how does Holland Hall fulfill that promise, that remarkable opportunity all children should have, in our work with students?

Create time and space for spiritual worship and reflection: All students receive religious education that is non-doctrinal and focused on our common humanity among religions while delving into biblical history. Beginning in kindergarten, students also attend weekly chapel services led by our chaplains: Father Art Scrutchins (upper school) and Reverend Amy Venable (primary and middle school). (Did you know longtime chaplain Rev. Bert Bibens is now our primary school head?) Chapel is a time for quiet worship, for being together in community, and for sharing common stories about how to live a good and meaningful life. It’s also a great place to bless animals during the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Finally, All Saints Chapel serves as an anchor when our community experiences its greatest times of need. A beloved coach and father of a Holland Hall student and alumni lost his fight with cancer this year. Faculty, friends, and community members touched by his life coalesced at All Saints Chapel to celebrate his life, to tell stories of enduring memory, and to console and offer love to one another.

Create opportunities to connect with one another through nature: With a 162 acre campus in south Tulsa that serves as both laboratory and playground, students as young as three years of age foster their natural curiosity among our forest, trails, and pond. In middle school, our students begin to spend the night on campus and, eventually, leave campus for truly outstanding, transformative experiences at St. Crispin’s Conference Center. (All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students attend these trips, called School Out of Doors.) Finally, in ninth grade they pack up all their food and tents, grab their compasses (okay, GPS devices), and head to the Wichita National Wildlife Refuge just west of Lawton for two nights in the pure wilderness. Freshman Orientation, now in

it’s 46th year, is the culminating experience that deepens relationships and an “inward look” amidst the backdrop of God’s creation.

Create learning environments that foster servant leadership: The test of true, deep learning is in the impact felt years after the experience. Every child strives to better understand themselves through the gifts and talents they hope to develop. Developing those talents best happens while in service to others. Many of our students travel to Ecuador on service learning experiences, to Tanzania to assist at JBFC (Janada L. Batchelor Foundation for Children), a boarding school for orphaned girls, or to local schools and hospitals where they tutor and translate. Holland Hall has also fostered ongoing connections for peer experiences in service and community together with both public and private schools in east and north Tulsa. Many other examples and opportunities abound.

Of course we are fortunate to have faculty from all over the country that value these ideals and the life of the mind. Our faculty give of themselves in and out of the classroom so students can grasp opportunities to study and live at colleges and universities where they can continue to grow into meaningful lives. Returning to our mission, Holland Hall is a college prep school that is able to offer more than just outstanding academics, arts, and athletics. Because of our distinct Episcopal approach and the care we offer for every child, we can offer them growth into lives that matter, lives that are propelled through college.

With warmest regards,

JP

J.P. Culley

Head of School

 Annual Report to the

Seventy‐eighth Diocesan Convention

September 2015

Since our founding in 1947 by The Rt. Reverend Thomas Casady, Casady School has enjoyed the

many benefits and blessings of being an Episcopal Day School.   We value and appreciate the

support of The Rt. Reverend Dr. Edward J. Konieczny and the Oklahoma Diocese.  We continue to

be in a great position to carefully and thoughtfully live out the mission of the School.

Casady School’s mission is to develop excellence, confidence, and integrity in students and to

prepare them with the skills and knowledge that serve as the foundation for success.  For the

year ending June 30, 2015, Casady School had enrolled 876 boys and girls ages pre‐kindergarten

through grade twelve.  Of the 876 children, 453 were boys and 423 were girls, and they were

spread fairly evenly throughout all the grades.

This past year our board of trustees continued its work on the School’s strategic plan and

outlined key areas of focus.  Our focus will be on four key pillars of excellence; 1‐ Excellence in

Teaching and Learning, 2‐ Excellence in Balance, 3‐ Excellence in Community, and 4‐ Excellence

through Sustainability.  We are excited to begin to operationalize components within each of

these pillars of excellence in the coming years.

Our 2014/2015 senior class once again makes our School proud.  Over 70 seniors matriculated to

more than 35 different schools across the country.  More than 70% of the students in the class

now attend schools out of state and more importantly these students now attend the college or

university that is the right fit for them based on their area of interest.  Schools range from Yale,

Dartmouth, MIT, Vanderbilt, Duke, Washington University, Navy, and West Point to Tisch School

at NYU, Occidental, OU, and OSU, and include many more great fits for our children who are set

to become our future leaders.

Casady School has continued to enhance our campus by addressing various maintenance

projects.  This summer, we completely gutted and renovated Miller Hall, which serves as our

Upper Division language building.  We also continued to work on our exterior hardscape and

landscape with a $500,000 sidewalk and exterior lighting project that now completes

approximately 75% of the walk around the lake.  Our theater received a $500,000 sound and

lighting upgrade so that what our students experience will support the development of

confidence and excellence.  Finally, we renovated the former Headmaster’s residence, the

Woolsey House, to accommodate the Office of Institutional Advancement (Admission and

Development).

We are very happy to report that the majority of the new teachers hired last year are doing a

remarkable job and have really grown in their understanding of our mission and vision.  This year,

we are happy to welcome 11 new faculty members to the School as well as three new staff

members.  We are excited to have them join our family and have enclosed bios of each new

member for your review.

We believe that Casady School’s commitment to daily worship is a hallmark of our Episcopal

identity.  However, we also recognize, as written in The Reason for Being, that we live in a

religiously pluralistic environment that creates a healthy tension and better prepares our

students for the world in which they will live.  It is in this tension that we are made stronger.

Faithfully,

 Nathan L. Sheldon

Head of School

2015 Annual Report to Diocesan Convention

Although the School was founded in 1977, this year we celebrate 25 years of being ‘Episcopal’. Thanks to the foresight of the then Board of Trustees and parents, and the openness of the diocesan bishop of the time, Bishop Moody and the diocesan council, in 1990, the course of the School changed forever. As we reach our silver jubilee, it is worth noting that our relationship with the Episcopal Diocese has grown stronger over the years. Both the rector of St. Philip’s, Ardmore, The Reverend Steve Bilsbury, and the diocesan bishop, The Right Reverend Dr. Edward J. Konieczny, have been exceptionally supportive of the School and its mission. The 32,000 square foot purpose-built facility, occupied since 1996, with an addition built in 2000, continues to be used by children, three years old through the Eighth Grade, as well as by community groups such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Girls on the Run, and the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. Oak Hall Episcopal School offers the traditional list of subjects, but as we educate the ‘whole child’, we include music and physical education every day, and Spanish beginning in Second Grade. Very importantly, every student has the opportunity, and expectation, to exercise a servant ministry through a variety of service learning projects. The School was the first private school in the nation to be named a Great Expectation Model School. We are accredited by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools, and hold memberships of the Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools, the National Association of Episcopal Schools, and the National Association of Independent Schools. Last year’s enrollment remained constant, finishing the year with 146 students. With the help of the Diocese and two local foundations, we were once again able to offer a substantial amount of needs based financial aid, with 20% of our students receiving assistance. As we continue to develop and live into our Episcopal identity, a key component is corporate worship. We now have a shortened form of Morning Prayer on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday remains ‘Big’ Chapel, conducted by Father Steve. One Wednesday each month Eucharist is celebrated. The Episcopal population of the School has risen slightly to 10% of families, but still less than the 25% average among member schools of the National Association of Episcopal Schools. Approximately 25% of employees identify themselves as Episcopalian, and to the best of my

knowledge, there are only two other administrators/teachers attending St. Philip’s who do not work at OHES – I will work on them! We believe that Oak Hall Episcopal School is demonstrating the very best of Episcopal education, to be comprehensive and inclusive – where children of all faiths, or none, are welcomed and celebrated as children of God, and where they are given the tools, opportunities, and encouragement to develop lives of meaning, purpose, and service to the community and world in which they live. Respectfully submitted Ken Willy Headmaster of Oak Hall Episcopal School

August 31, 2015:

St. Mary’s Episcopal School Edmond, Oklahoma

St. Mary’s Episcopal School, established in 1977 as a parish day school of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, serves as an outreach ministry of the church educating young children ages three through grade five. Our mission calls us to provide quality academic programs in a Christian environment fostering respect for faith, family, others and self. St. Mary’s attracts families because of the educational environment, Christian values, and a culture of respect that fosters learning. Christian principles, moral values, and responsibility skills are instilled and reinforced through weekly chapel services and extended throughout the school program. The Rev. Dr. Mark Story servers as our school chaplain and religious advisor. We are fortunate to have a strong faculty who are passionate about education and dedicated to our school. St. Mary’s Episcopal School is the only school in Edmond that offers stimulating enrichment experiences in the areas of science, music, health and wellness, fine arts, Spanish, technology skills, and a before and after school program for children of all levels. Educating our students can take place in our beautiful facility and also on our 51 acre campus. We are committed to developing students who have compassionate hearts, to serve God and others. Our service learning component is laying the foundation for civic participation skills and instilling the importance of being responsible citizens. St. Mary’s Episcopal School is an accredited and active member of the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools. The Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools Executive Board, upon recommendation of the Standards Committee, granted St. Mary’s Episcopal School full accreditation through June 30, 2024. St. Mary’s Episcopal School is truly blessed to be able to continue providing the highest quality educational experience to our students in a nurturing, Christian environment. We value our relationship with the diocese through membership in the Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools. Submitted by: Pamela Dockter, Head of School.

2015 Annual Report to Convention

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Preschool

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Preschool is a developmental program that strives to provide activities and learning experiences to build each child’s self-esteem while stimulating cognitive development and socialization skills. We endeavor to provide each child with a loving, accepting environment while increasing skills according to his/her development. We believe that a positive classroom environment is essential for reaching optimal development. We want the children to feel self-confident as well as capable of meeting new challenges, both social and educational. Classroom activities are varied to provide a balance between free-choice and teacher-directed activities, with a large variety of options that meet needs in all developmental areas – large/fine motor, cognitive, social, emotional, and self-help skills. Our teachers seek to create a thought-provoking, motivating curriculum that centers on developing the whole child.

Beginning our 37th school year with 53 students, ages 3 months to 5 years, enrolled, our enrollment is lower than this time last year but steadily increasing. St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Preschool is a member of Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools and National Association of Episcopal Schools.

We strive to maintain a community in which all people, children and adults alike, are respected and supported as unique and valuable individuals. The Church provides the Judeo-Christian heritage which underlies the preschool’s value system. We follow the guidelines of the Episcopal Church in making decisions about religious views and personal values.

The parish of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church is a huge support to our preschool. From donations to participation in preschool fundraisers, the parish is such a blessing to our school. Our biggest fundraising event, the annual Lobsterpalooza, would not be the success that it is without the support and help of parish members.
