With the successful adoption of L.A. city’s Proposition HHH $1.2 bil-lion bond measure and the county’s

Prop H to house and assist people experienc-ing homelessness, next steps are unfolding to serve those most in need. With 47,000 home-less in L.A. County and 28,000 in the city, Los Angeles leads the nation in the number of chronically homeless individuals and fami-lies. In response at this time, the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders is joining other community stakeholders in carefully review-ing options to assist in strategic and produc-tive ways.

Recognizing that homelessness needs atten-tion across all six counties of the Diocese of Los Angeles, we at this time join in support-ing L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti in response to his call for June 2 – 11 “Days of Compassion” to launch a new effort of saying “yes in my backyard,” or “YIMBY” to construction of greatly needed units of new permanent sup-portive housing.

As you may know from experience in the L.A. neighborhoods of Hollywood, down-town, Venice and the San Fernando Valley, the affordable housing developments being built today are architecturally appealing and highly sustainable in service to residents, in-cluding individuals and families. (Take a look at the photo below of the Venice Gateway complex opened last year.) These outstanding buildings assist us in saying yes to such devel-opments rather than the familiar “NIMBY” or “not in my backyard.”

For the Days of Compassion project, Mayor Garcetti invites local clergy to consider preaching and conven-ing conversations be-tween June 2 and June 11 “confronting the NIMBY culture and offering the vision of YIMBY.” Specific action could include:u Organizing groups

to visit Permanent Sup-portive Housing (PNH) sites in your area.u Repurposing unde-

rutilized real estate and assessing the feasibility of conversion to shelter beds (crisis housing),

winter shelter, storage facilities, case man-agement offices, and/or affordable hous-ing development sites. Speakers from www.recycledresources.org/coalition are available to join you.u Becoming a “Hospitality HUB,” offer

ing safe spaces where people experiencing homelessness can find respite during their homeless journeys.u Exploring “Safe Parking.” The L.A.

mayor’s office will provide a speaker for your congregation or gathering. (bit.ly/2qpcykZ)u Mentoring a recently housed family

through Imagine L.A.’s program (www.imag inela.org).

u Inviting a member of SpeakUp! — an advocacy program composed of persons with lived experience — to give remarks during a weekly service. (www.csh.org/speakup)u Organizing a group to participate in

“Laundry Love” in your area – regular op-portunities to help people who are struggling financially by assisting them with doing their laundry. (www.laundrylove.org)

I strongly endorse these initiatives and in-vite the diocesan community to join the ef-forts across the city and county of Los Ange-les and beyond. If you would like additional information, contact our diocesan Commu-nity Relations Office at the Cathedral Center ([email protected]). Inspired by our Lord’s call to be his hands and heart of mercy in this world, let us join together in service to sisters, brothers and children most in need. May God bless us as we do so. ?
