CHILDREN'S WORSHIP

We are now taking applications

for someone to lead our Children's Worship on Sunday mornings. The person in this

role will work closely with Jaime Rochester, our Children and Youth Ministry Director in providing a meaningful and

creative worship experience for our children. Please email

Laurie Evans Ross, Staff-Parish Relations Committee Chair, to

apply. Her email address is [email protected]. Interviews will be set up with members of Epworth’s SPRC

Committee.

Lent? Why are we Methodist so hung up on Lent?

What is Lent, for that matter?

The United Methodist Book of Worship tells us that the

name Lent comes from an Anglo-Saxon word – lencten

– which means spring. The reason the Anglo-Saxons

termed this season Spring is because of the early

church’s practice of baptizing new converts on Easter.

Before these new Christians, however, could be

baptized, the early church asked them to examine their

lives for 40 days. The early church wasn’t being puni-

tive. They really wanted new converts to understand

that making the choice to follow Christ could cost them

their families, their livelihood and possibly their lives.

So for 40 days, the new converts were to ask them-

selves, “Is there anything in my life that is resisting the

Lordship of Christ? Am I willing to live and die for

Christ?” The interesting thing is that Christians soon

began to recognize what a powerful spiritual exercise

it is to examine whether you are letting Christ be your

Lord or not. As a result, the season of Lent became a

part of the early church life and is practiced by many

Christians throughout the world. So how can you and I

practice Lent?

Some people take 40 days to add a spiritual

practice into their lives. For example, people have made

a commitment to read the Bible, when they have not

been doing so before. Others seek to improve their

prayer life. Still others take these 40 days to examine if

they need to add more service ministries into their life

(for example, helping with the homeless, visiting the

prisons or contacting shut-ins).

Lent isn’t a legalistic exercise. You don’t have to

keep it if you don’t want. Lent, rather is an opportunity

to see how you can grow closer to this Lord who thought

you were worth giving all for.

Savings Time begins

Dear Epworth UMC,

Words just cannot adequately express our thanks and appreciation to all of you

for all you have done for all of us who were part of the Faith Community Church

these past months. Thank you with all our hearts’ gratitude for your love, warm,

friendly, welcoming hospitality.

Love, Ralph and Elaine Gardner (FCC)

Thank you for allowing our church to spend its’ last 6 months in your beautiful

chapel. Your worship service at Epworth UMC was also meaningful as the hymns

brought back happy memories.

—Randolph and Gemma Hall

We received thanks from Pastor Himidi Sagga in Pommern Parish, Tanzania, for our support. Your Faith Promise donations have helped plaster the Semteme church offices, supported their local missions, and helped pay tuition for three students, Risper, Sayuni, and Yeriko. Thank you! Our financial support of 4:13 Strong has helped a young man named Jeremy find purpose and pride in doing a job well as a laborer's apprentice. You can learn more about 4:13 Strong at their 6th Annual Standing Strong Dinner on April 16. Tickets are $150 per person, or $1500 for a table of ten. For more information go to 413strong.org/standing-strong. For other ways to get involved with 4:13 Strong, contact Penny Vaughan, 615-218-9417. Thank you for your generous donations of cleaning and personal hygiene products. GraceWorks and Fresh Start Recovery recipients are very grateful. We continue monthly meals for the youth at FrankTown Open Hearts on first Monday nights. If you would like to help, contact Vicki Campbell, 615-473-7852.

It's not too late to sign up for our mission trip to the Blackfeet United Methodist Parish (BUMP) in Montana. We will be working on the ranch August 10-12, and see their festival August 13. We hope to go a few days early to visit Glacier National Park. For more information contact Cindy Kurzrock, 615-945-6311.
