Wherever you are in life, Mary Andrews College has a place for you.

We offer a range of flexible and exciting study options to fit your season of life: diplomas, certificates, or short courses on life-changing topics taught by caring lecturers in a friendly environment.

We’ll help you grow in your faith to serve the world with Christ’s love.

Because at Mary Andrews College, your dreams matter.

Studies at Mary Andrews College (a ministry of Anglican Deaconess Ministries) are designed to form you theologically and to equip you practically. Whether studying biblical truths or exploring new ideas, we believe you’re better equipped to respond to a changing world when you set aside time to grow in God’s unchanging Word. As you do, your vision for God’s kingdom is enlarged and your strength developed, making you better able to minister and serve others.

One of the most consistent aspects of life this side of heaven is change. Our ministry and career opportunities evolve, children grow up, and neighbours move.

Mary Andrews College has an exciting history of training students for service in a changing world. Many who have studied here have gone on to lead ministries in their local church, chaplaincy programs in their communities, or mission work around the world. They come to study with a sense of calling, sometimes even a small mustard seed of faith, yet leave with transformed minds and renewed hearts. Grounded and anchored in Christ’s love, they’re ready for any change life might bring.

This booklet reflects the best of MAC in providing such opportunities for you to grow. Whether following the Pathway to Pastoral Ministry or choosing a specific Certificate or Diploma, I’m confident that the mentors and experiences you’ll find at MAC will further equip you to walk with our unchanging God and serve this ever-changing world.

We pray your time at Mary Andrews College brings you closer to Jesus and his unchanging love.

Life can take unexpected turns. We wonder what would have happened if we’d finished those studies. Or we find ourselves eager for new opportunities to grow in our faith.

Studyoptions

MAC offers the Australian College of Theology’s diploma and certificate courses. There are multiple ways to start your studies at Mary Andrews College. DIPLOMA LEVELThe diploma level of study is our most in-depth qualification option. Each unit usually requires three assignments. Assignments may include a wide variety of tasks that require thoughtful reflection on what you have learned. See pages 8-17 for more details. A FEE-HELP loan may be available to help pay for your study (see page 22).

CERTIFICATE LEVELThe certificate level of study is our entry level qualification option. Each unit requires two or three assignments that are set by the lecturer. Assignments are shorter in length and are not as demanding as those set at diploma level. The hours required to complete certificate level study are significantly less than at diploma level. See pages 18-20 for more details.

AUDITINGAuditing allows students to attend lectures and participate fully in class life without having to complete assignments. All of our units are able to be audited and there are no limits as to the combination or number of units that a student can audit. Possible units can be found on pages 11-20. If you audit a unit, it is important to remember that you do not receive credit for participation towards any kind of qualification; it is for your interest and enjoyment only. Pricing for units depends on the number of lecture hours, see pages 12 and 20 for details.

LECTURE FORMATSMAC offers units in flexible formats. They are taught weekly, fortnightly or in intensive mode.

RETURN TO LEARNMAC provides a supportive study environment. If you feel that your study skills need a refresher, many MAC students have benefited from attending study skills workshops run periodically at MAC. Alternatively, it is possible to audit your first unit to see how the College works before committing to a full course at either diploma or certificate level.

LOCATIONMAC remains committed to face-to-face learning when possible. However, for 2020, all of our units will be offered as online lectures as a response to COVID-19 restrictions to care for our community and enable learning to proceed.

NO EXAMSThere are no exams at MAC; instead all units are assessed by a variety of assignments.

PATHWAY TO PASTORAL MINISTRY/CHAPLAINCYMAC specialises in pastoral care. If pastoral care is your passion, we have two suggested Pathways to Pastoral Ministry at either diploma or certificate level. These pathways take the guesswork out of which units to choose. Completing one of these Pathways would equip you to be a Community Chaplain, or provide a qualification to pursue pastoral ministry in a variety of settings. See pages 6-7 for details.

76 MARY ANDREWS COLLEGE

We believe that pastoral care is vital for the flourishing of God’s people. Pastoral care springs from God’s compassionate care and his call to care for one another in ways that express his love. Pastoral care stands at the intersection of opportunities both for sharing the gospel, and for facilitating maturing growth of the body of Christ. The effective outworking of pastoral care is grounded in a knowledge of God’s word and the shaping of pastoral skills that reflect Christ-like character and love.

MAC has developed two suggested Pathways to Pastoral Ministry that will equip students to have well-rounded, biblically based training in pastoral care. Graduates are enabled to minister in a broad range of pastoral situations in

churches, aged care facilities, hospitals and in the community.

The pathways are available in a specific cycle of units regularly offered on specific days in the College timetable.

This will maximise the learning opportunity and develop a community of like-minded students who can continue to encourage and support one another beyond their College days.

Pathway to Pastoral Ministry

Two pathways

1 2

This pathway is through the Australian College of Theology’s Certificate in Theology (see pages 18-19). It provides an essential grounding in the Bible, and highly practical pastoral care training. This course has been designed to be completed in one year, however this can be extended for those who need a more flexible option. Certificate level units will be offered on Thursdays.

Want to try out studying before committing to a certificate? We offer an introductory pathway that could be the right fit for you.

On successful completion of these two units students receive the MAC Pastoral Care Course award. If you choose to continue your study these two units will count towards the ACT’s Certificate in Theology.

This pathway is through the Australian College of Theology’s Diploma of Christian Studies (see page 10 for more information), using units that focus on a biblical framework and practical skills for pastoral care. The course has been designed to be completed over three years part-time, however this can be extended up to six years for those who need a more flexible option. These units will be offered on Mondays and Fridays.

For more diploma options which include different units, see pages 8-10.

For different elective units, see page 19.

It consists of six units. Each unit requires twelve hours class time spread over four days, plus readings and assignments.

The topic area is covered at a lighter level than the diplomas, making it accessible for most learners. The certificate course is open to suitable students who have completed at least up to Year 10 or equivalent in high school.

Old Testament (OT)Capture ‘God’s big picture’ in the Old Testament as he put in place his plan to bring the Lord Jesus to earth. Deepen your understanding of OT theology.
