Many good Catholics do not realize how important the works of mercy are in the daily living of the Chris an life.

Love Demands Them The works of mercy are important because they connect the love of neighbor with the love of God. In the Gospels, our Lord was asked the ques on, "What is the first of all the commandments?" (Mk 12:28; Mt 22:34-40; Lk 10:25-28) The rabbis (teachers) and the scribes (religious lawyers) had gone through the Old Testament wri ngs and various other legisla ve documents and come up with 613 precepts that had to be obeyed. The debate focused on which of these was the most important. The various scribes who put this ques on to Jesus were looking for only one answer. Our Lord, however, gave two commandments. Quo ng one of them from the Book of Deuteronomy (6:5), he said: "You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment" (Mt 22:37-38). That was the only answer the scribe was looking for, but our Lord went further. Quo ng from Levi cus (19:18), he added: "And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets" (Mt 22:39-40). What our Lord is teaching us here is that we cannot separate the love of God from the love of our neighbor. One without the other is incomplete. They must go together.

The Eucharist Calls Us to Charity The second reason we must perform the works of mercy is because the Holy Eucharist, which is "the source and summit of the Chris an life" as the Second Va can Council described it, moves us from sacramental union with Christ in his Eucharis c Body to union with Christ in his Mys cal Body, in the least of his brothers and sisters. This two-fold love, stemming from the Eucharist, is the fulfillment of the love of God and neighbor men oned above. This two-fold Eucharis c love becomes the basis upon which to live our new life in Christ. It is not enough to have mere piety. To live fully in communion with Christ, we must reach out to

our neighbor as well. We find this two-fold love expressed so beau fully in the First Le er of John: "God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him" (4:16). To share in this love of God, meaning that God loves us and we love him in return, is the very reason we were created. This love is the source of all our joy and happiness, both in me and in eternity.

On Monday, Catholics and many other Chris ans will cele-brate the feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God.

Venerable Pope Pius XII confirmed this belief about the Virgin Mary as the perennial teaching of the Church when he defined it formally as a dogma of Catholic faith in 1950. The cons tu on also cited tes monies from the early Church fathers on the subject, and described the history of theological reflec on on many Biblical passages which are seen as indica ng that Mary was assumed into heaven fol-lowing her death. Although the bodily assump on of Mary is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, Catholic tradi on iden fies her with the “woman clothed with the sun” who is described in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revela on. Eastern Chris ans have also tradi onally held Mary's As-sump on into heaven as an essen al component of their faith. Pius XII cited several early Byzan ne liturgical texts, as well as the eighth-century Arab Chris an theologian St. John of Damascus, in his own authorita ve defini on of her assump on. In Eastern Chris an tradi on, the same feast is celebrated on the same calendar date, although typically known as the Dormi on (falling asleep) of Mary. Eastern Catholic celebra on of the Dormi on is preceded by a two-week period of fas ng which is similar to Lent. The Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obliga on. However, when it falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obliga on to a end Mass is abrogated.

MISSIONARIES OF THE POOR: Gree ngs and updates from Kenya A few weeks ago, another group of volunteers returned from their sixth mission to Kenya. I would like to share some updates with you from this most recent trip as well as thank you for your con nuous support of the MOP brothers and their work. At the School of the Devine Mercy in the slums of Nairobi Kenya, we o en heard the children happily calling to us, “Muzungu, muzungu, Ula, Marta.” (Muzungu literally translates to “white person.”) When opening the gates of the school and the orphanage, the children once again threw themselves into our arms. Wearing their new uniforms and shoes, the children look like they a ending an elite school. Their classrooms, although very modest, were clean and dy. Even the toys we purchased in December (balls, jump ropes, and hula-hoops), although very worn, were there and the children carefully put them away into their boxes a er they finished playing with them. The students’ meals have also significantly improved. Their dishes have been enhanced with fruits, vegetables, meat, and a side of milk. It is because of your generosity that we can help support and improve this school. It is also thank to you that 120 children now receive 3 meals a day and an educa on. Thanks you to all who have helped make this possible. During our visit, Brother Gabriel shared some very good news with us about the children’s’ educa on. He informed us that our school is one of the best in the area! At first, I was unsure what he meant but he quickly explained children at our school are excelling on the na onal standardized tests. Evidently, we are very proud that students from our school are achieving such high test scores. Thank YOU ALL from the bo om of our hearts. Not only that, this great news has been a great source of mo va on for us to con nue working on this project. It has rekindled our faith in this mission and reaffirmed our belief that we are making a difference, that we are improving these children’s lives, and that we’re giving them hope. When I got to Kenya, I thought, “It’s good to be home again.” The humble yet ever-so hospitable mission in Kenya has become like our second home. The brothers, children, and teachers are very welcoming and cannot wait un l we come back again. This trip, in par cular, was a very special and unforge able one for a few reasons. Receiving news that the school is very successful due to the children’s high test scores, par cipa ng in the final profession of 6 new brothers from Kenya, and perhaps most importantly, a ending the blessing of the new orphanage by the cardinal of Nairobi all made this trip truly unique and incredible. The Blessing of the Orphanage was one of the most beau ful moments of my life. Father Paul, who was here with us during Lent, kept his promise that the children from the old orphanage would be moved to the new one before the rainy season. They’ll be relocated from the barracks that they currently live in to a beau ful clean new building… their happiness is abundant. Our parish is part of this project. Because of your generosity, we were able to help in the building of this orphanage. One of the three new buildings will be dedicated to our friends from Chicago. Eighty disabled and sick orphans will be able to call this building their new home.

The en re development consists of two buildings to live in as well as a separate one with a kitchen, dining room, and a chapel. (This is the building dedicated to our friends and supporters in Chicago). I was joking around with Father Paul one day and asked him why this building was chosen for Chicago. He answered, “Marta, the kitchen is the heart of every home, besides, whenever you guys are here, you’re always cooking something and no one is ever hungry.” There’s s ll a long road ahead of us un l we complete the project and the funds are limited; however, we believe that with the help of good people and constant providence of our Lord, anything is possible. Working in Africa has taught me much humility and the importance of trust. It has taught me to trust in God boundlessly, appreciate everything that we have, and take cherish each day. I used to think that everything in life was up to us and that we decide everything. How wrong was I? Without trust, prayers, and faith, we cannot achieve much. The mission in Kenya needs our support, prayers, and assurance that they are not alone. Personally, I’m deeply touched to see that there is not one mass, prayer, nor adora on during which the Brothers don’t pray for our Parish and all those who have helps them in any way possible. We are s ll in need of about $30,000 to complete the building. Prices in Kenya are comparable, and even some mes higher than they are in the United States. That said, if anyone would like to support us in equipping the kitchen (purchasing an oven, stove, fridge, table, chairs, utensils, cups, etc.) please don’t hesitate to contact us. It’s always difficult to come back home. The Brothers don’t say “goodbye” to us when bidding us farewell. Instead, they say, “See you in December.” They don’t want to say goodbye. They hope that we will return in a few months and once again, we’ll become a large family. There’s nothing more beau ful than praying together, working at the school, or spending

me at the orphanage. It’s precious spending me with the children when they beg us to stay

a li le bit more to play with them and ask to hold them close. It’s difficult leaving them but faith and the belief that I’ll revisit soon gives me strength. In one week, a er each Mass, we’d like to invite everyone for a short presenta on on our most recent trip to Kenya. W tygodniu Nowenna odprawiana jest po Mszy św. o godz. 7:00 wieczorem, w sobotę po Mszy św. o godz. 7 rano, a w niedzielę o godz. 10:00 rano. W dniu 15 sierpnia obchodzimy Uroczystość Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, nazywaną także Świętem Matki

Boskiej Zielnej ( w Polsce) bądź Matki Boskiej Korzennej (w Czechach). Uroczystość ta obchodzona jest w Kościele od V wieku - na początku występowała pod nazwą Zaśnięcie lub Przejścia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, dopiero w VII wieku w Kościele Rzymskokatolickim upowszechniła się obecna nazwa. Jest to najstarsza uroczystość maryjna i wywodzi się z przeświadczenia, że Maryja nie umarła jak zwykły człowiek, lecz została wzięta do nieba, co było nagrodą za życie wierne Bogu. Syn Boży, Jezus Chrystus, nie tylko wyniósł swoją Matkę do chwały zbawionych w niebie, ale dał nam także zapowiedź tego, co będzie również i naszym udziałem, jeśli tylko upodobnimy nasze życie do Jej życia. W krajach europejskich i w Polsce czci się Matkę Boską Wniebowziętą jako patronkę ziemi i jej bujnej roślinności. Z tą maryjną uroczystością związana jest starożytna tradycja liturgiczna, oddająca hołd Maryi wraz z poświęceniem na Jej cześć leczniczych ziół. Od IX wieku w święto Wniebowzięcia składa się Maryi ofiary płodów ziemi: zioła, warzywa, owoce i kwiaty, które symbolizują Jej duchową pełnię, jako "najdorodniejszego ziemskiego owocu" i „najpiękniejszego kwiata ludzkości”. W polskiej tradycji ludowej uroczystość w Święto Matki Bożej Zielnej liczne sanktuaria maryjne, kościoły i kaplice, wypełniają się przybyłymi wiernymi i pielgrzymami, którzy przynoszą do poświęcenia wianki zielne, bukiety kwiatów, kłosy zbóż i owoce, w szczególności w regionach wiejskich. Kiedyś ten zwyczaj był bardzo popularny, ponieważ wierzono, że pobłogosławione rzeczy nabierają mocy leczniczych. W dniu 15 sierpnia najsłynniejsze maryjne sanktuaria mają swe odpusty. Szczególnie oblegana jest przez pielgrzymów Częstochowa, a także Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, gdzie odbywają się inscenizacje Zaśnięcia Maryi oraz Jej Wniebowzięcia.

Ofiara ta została wykorzystana na zakup 30 jednakowych ornatów, które będą używane w naszym kościele podczas Mszy św. koncelebrowanych. Niech Bóg wynagrodzi dobroć waszą, a szczególnie obdarza ppotrzebnymi łaskami wszystkich ofiarodawców i wasze rodziny.

Ludźmierskiej. Jest to pamiętna data, w tym dniu z ogromnym bólem przyjęliśmy wiadomość o nagłej śmierci 57- letniego Prezesa Klubu: Stanisława Kowalkowskiego. Wieść o jego śmierci wycisnęła łzy wzruszenia każdemu znajomemu, a w szególności członkom klubu, których tak wielu zgromadził w tak krótkim czasie , ludzi

pochodzących z Podhala oraz tych, którzy czuli pomoc działania w polskiej organizacji kościelnej z tradycjami góralskimi. Poświęcał swój wolny czas dla dobra klubu. Zaufał w całości Patronce koła Matce Boskiej Ludźmierskiej „Królowej Podhala”. Z nim również na niebieskie polany odeszli członkowie klubu: Józef Zachemski, Stanislaw Hajnos,Jan i Aniela Sąder, Maria Wróbel, Franciszek Szczęch,Stanisław Krupa, Małgorzata Bywalec. Przypominamy, że w liturgiczną uroczystość Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, 8 grudnia 2015 r. rozpoczął się Rok Święty Miłosierdzia. „Aby przeżyć i uzyskać odpust, wierni mają odbyć krótką pielgrzymkę do Drzwi Świętych, otwartych w każdej Katedrze i w kościołach wyznaczonych przez Biskupa diecezjalnego, na znak głębokiego pragnienia prawdziwego nawrócenia. Jednocześnie rozporządzam w miejscach gdzie zostały otwarte Drzwi Miłosierdzia, i w kościołach, które tradycyjnie są uznawane za Jubileuszowe była możliwość uzyskania odpustu. Ważne jest, aby ten moment był połączony przede wszystkim z Sakramentem Pojednania i uczestnictwem w Mszy św. oraz refleksją nad miłosierdziem. Konieczne będzie, by tym celebracjom towarzyszyło wyznanie wiary i modlitwa za mnie oraz w intencjach, które noszę w sercu dla dobra Kościoła i całego świata.” (List Ojca Świętego Franciszka przed Jubileuszem Miłosierdzia, Watykan, 01.09.2015) Zgodnie z wolą Ojca Świętego arcybiskupi ustanowili dekretami świątynie, gdzie można uzyskiwać odpusty zupełne w Roku Miłosierdzia i takim miejscem jest nasz kościół św. For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass.
