Program notes by George Berglund

The Dale Warland SingersThe Dale Warland Singers, now in its ninth season, is a 46-voicemixed professional choral ensemble comprised of singers fromthe Minneapolis-St. Paul area which has received extensivenational and international critical acclaim. While building an extensive repertoire of standard a cappellachoral music, The Dale Warland Singers ensemble has made oneof its most significant contributions with artistic performances of20th-century music. The long list of composers represents a widevariety of nationalities and musical styles. The Dale Warland Singers appear regularly with The Saint PaulChamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and Minnesota Opera. In addition, they concertize throughout the central portion of theUnited States and broadcast regularly over public radio. In 1977The Dale Warland Singers toured Scandinavia at the request ofthe Swedish and Norwegian governments (Rikskonserter), andrecorded for both Swedish and Norwegian Radio.Continually active in recording projects, The Dale WarlandSingers may currently be heard on three recently-released digitalrecordings: Echoes of Christmas (Augsburg), Choral Mosaic(Augsburg), and La Fiesta de la Posada (Columbia; with DaveBrubeck and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra). Two albums ofScandinanvian choral music, Gloria and Swedish Chroral Ballads, have just been released by Walton Music Corporation. A newdigital Christmas album, Carols of Christmas, will be released byAugsburg Publishing House in summer 1981.

IRegina coeli, K. 276 (1779) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

(sung in Latin) (1756-1791)

Linda Steen, sopranoRica Jane Van, alto

Larry Lee Hensel, tenorFrank Steen, bass

Regina coeli, laetare, alleluia;Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia.Resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia:Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia! For He whom thou didst merit to bear, alleluiaHath risen, as He said, alleluia.Pray for us to God, alleluia. This setting of the Regina coeli (an antiphon to the Blessed VirginMary) is a typical example of Mozart's early churchcompositions, most of which were written between 1772 and1777 while he was Court Violinist and Concert Master at theArchiepiscopal Court of Salzburg in the service of ArchbishopColloredo. Although difficulties with the Archbishop and severelystraitened financial circumstances forced Mozart to resign onAugust 1, 1977, the Regina coeli - written two years later -brilliantly illustrates the elements of small scale, compact style, and fine construction that were formulated and developedextensively during his Salzburg tenure.

IIMass in G Minor (1923) Ralph Vaughan Williams

(sung in Latin)Victoria Dean, soprano

Dianne Prieditis, altoWilliam Rollie, tenorJack Jaeger, bass

I. KyrieII. GloriaIII. CredoIV. Sanctus-Osanna I-Benedictus-Osanna IIV. Agnus DeiRalph Vaughan Williams' Mass in G Minor is considered by manyto be one of the masterpieces of English church music in ourtime. Dedicated to Gustav Holst and his Whitsuntide Singers, it isessentially a liturgical work inspired by the great polyphonicliturgy of the English Renaissance-particularly the masses ofWilliam Byrd and Thomas Tallis. Scored for double chorus andsolo quartet, the Mass abounds with massive sonorities andantiphonal effects. Its second performance was in London'sWestminster Cathedral under the direction of Sir Richard Terry; ithas been sung at the most solemn liturgical observances thereever since.

IVDance Set, Opus 32 (1980) Libby Larsen

Jerry Rubino, piano (1950- )Loreen Dimmick. clarinetBarbara McMeen. cello

Allen Brown. percussionI. Two-step and DragII. Her First WaltzIII. Polka

Written especially for The Dale Warland Singers under theauspices of the Minnesota State Arts Board individual FellowshipGrant and dedicated to Dale Warland, Dance Set, for wordlesschorus and instruments, is a reflection on American dance musicfrom the turn of the century. I am intrigued by the vitality of thismusic (the cake walk, fox trot, etc.) and have combined itsrhythmic vigor with a choral sound. I chose three dance forms-the two-step and drag, waltz, and polka-to make this set. InTwo-Step and Drag, the couple begins dancing in duble meter;suddenly, the rhythm changes, in an attempt to fool the couple, creating a whimsical effect. Her First Waltz evokes the image ofa young girl shyly dancing; she begins tentatively, then whirlsgrandly into an elegant waltz. The Polka is a rhytmic, raucous, and jaunty country dance.

-Libby Larsen
