DESIGN MEETS DURABILITYThe tried and true traditional materials in exterior architecture create a timeless look. However, what are your design tools to tell a brand story? How do you create warmth and welcoming? How do you strategically design a focal point with a modern flare?
Bold color, translucency and fluid shapes of resins in exterior applications can tell a powerful narrative, create an inviting experience, broadcast a brand message or preview interior design.
3form® materials are modern design tools allowing you to go beyond the limitations of traditional architectural materials. Impact resistance, UV stability and proven performance make these powerhouse polymers a natural choice when classic materials restrict design possibilities and application opportunities.

SYMPHONYPARKIn 2009, the city of Las Vegas, designated 61 acres in the heart of the downtown area for mixed use development to be called Symphony Park. Construction was completed in early 2013 for this project, which now offers a variety of four different public spaces including cultural, residential, shopping and restaurant, and medical office areas. The city planners realized their vision of a vibrant addition to the city for locals and visitors alike.
The city hired Los Angeles firm, Davies Associates, to design an entrance signage feature that embodied the dynamic energy of Symphony Park. Davies Associates Senior Designer and artist, Paul Hershfield, designed a dynamic asymmetrical tower sculpture. The challenge of designing and engineering a custom monument sign with complicated shapes and angles required a great deal of collaboration between the design firm, contractors and 3form’s Advanced Technology Group (ATG).

DESIGN AND ENGINEERING: A CUSTOM INSTALL-READY SYSTEM
DESIGN AND ENGINEERING KODA XT®3-FORM.COM/XT
TUBE STEEL GEOMETRIC FRAMING ASSEMBLED PRIMARY STRUCTURE FULL ASSEMBLY
RELECTIVE LIGHT PANELS & KODA XT MATERIAL INDEXED FOR EASY ON-SITE INSTALLATION
FINAL ASSEMBLY
3form® ATG developed a custom structural system allowing all panels to be installed and removed independently—with no hardware removal required. The engineering also facilitated minimal engagement between the panel edges and supporting profiles, providing maximum panel illumination with minimal shadowing. The system was initially tested on a full-size prototype for evaluation and verification of panel light transmission, lighting conditions and hardware fabrication feasibility. ATG obtained
in-field measurements for the installation from the installing contractor and retrofitted the data onto a full digital SolidWorks model. They then used the model to produce full-size templates to lay out and index the parts relative to the existing grid for ease of installation.

EL PASO CIVIC CENTERThe rich historical heritage of El Paso, Texas is manifested in the city’s cultural focus of the Civic Center Plaza, located next to the distinctive sombrero-like shape of the Abraham Chavez Theater, designed in the 1970’s. The city wanted to add functional shade for outdoor events.
The city desired the incorporation of bold color that reflected the culture of the area. Carl Daniels Architects sought lightweight, durable materials to create an outdoor feature that would be both artistic and functional as a respite from the southwestern sunshine.

The team, in collaboration with artist Barbara Grygutis, specified Koda XT in a variety of bold colors to represent the Hispanic heritage of El Paso. The lightweight material was much easier to install than glass, while having the needed properties to withstand the intense El Paso heat.
The circular formation and bright colors create the feeling of a Chinese fan, something to cool and comfort during hot seasons, much like the canopies will do for the patrons of the Civic Center Plaza in the El Paso climate.

We wanted a material to stand up to the environment and one that would be impact resistant. 3form was the clear choice—their material wasn’t flimsy or breakable.”— Ozzie Tapia, LPA, Inc.
Rio Hondo challenged LPA with the design of their new sports complex buildings. The architects sought to mirror the dynamic, free-flowing energy of the students with an exterior feature that additionally conveyed the building’s purpose.
LPA strove to deviate from the long-standing tradition of neutral architecture with bold brand colors exhibited by shorter-lived fabric banners. They conceived sturdy, permanent exterior, illuminated fins in gradient colors from rich yellow to deep orange to create depth, to express the building identity and integrate the college brand colors.
LPA reached out to 3form® because of the durable and weather-hardiness of their Koda resin as well as the ability to backlight Koda at night. The solution created an exterior composition of color and high resolution words illustrating the purpose of the building in a dynamic way.

EAST RANCHODOMINGUEZLIBRARYIn a city comprised of mostly working class citizens located just southeast of Los Angeles, the East Rancho Dominguez library is both a symbol of hope and a center for community outreach. As part of a general development plan, the municipality designated the stretch of road the library sits on as the inaugural place to breathe new life into the community.
The city challenged Carde Ten to create a welcoming and warm library in an otherwise lite-industrial part of town. The site dictated an east/west building orientation, demanding an architectural solution to mitigate the solar heat gain and glare.

Architect Erik Mar integrated the design of colorful translucent fins into the exterior facade to provide the necessary sun shading and serve as the main welcoming element. They specified 3form translucent Koda XT material, as it would filter the natural light entering the building, while creating a durable exterior feature.
Koda XT was specified in multiple C3 colors for the vertical fins. Cheerful hues were strategically chosen to communicate the desired narrative. The sunlight passing through the colored fins
creates what architect Erik Mar calls “a continuous mosaic of colors” on the interior of the building, making the lighting changeable and interesting year round. The 3form C3 color system enabled the design team to specify the same color palette on the interior 3form Pressed Glass partitions, thus creating interior/exterior continuity.

RUTGERS
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, founded in 1766, is a top-tier national research university with a rich history. For more than two centuries Rutgers has provided nationally recognized high educational standards, broken new ground in research, provided services, solutions and clinical care to help individuals and the local, national, and global communities where they live.
Architects at De Biasse & Seminara were tasked with updating dilapidated old bus stop shelters. Rutgers wanted the new waiting areas to be open, enabling foot traffic to flow through without hinderance. Simple, unobtrusive yet easily identifiable transit shelters were needed. The project specifications included the use of Rutgers school colors in a cost-effective, durable, and lightweight design.

Michael De Biasse brought 3form material into the process very early on. “We knew we needed to have translucency, color, strength, and a lightweight solution. Only 3form could do all that while providing a single source for materials, hardware, and all other technical support.”
De Biasse worked collaboratively with 3form ATG experts to create a modular solution. The design allowed for installation in various configurations throughout the campus, from transit stations of different lengths and widths, to those needing to

match the terrain—all using simple components —a column, panel and the overhead frame.
Mindful of the relatively short 3-minute maximum wait at each station, designers eschewed the traditional enclosed shelter for a more open design, with a translucent roof to filter Rutgers scarlet light onto the ground below while revealing the sky overhead.

REGIONALTRANSITAUTHORITYThe city of New Orleans is a historical gem and has seen a lot of changes over the years. The public transportation system offered by the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) provides locals and visitors with three different streetcar lines and 32 bus lines.
The RTA tasked AECOM to design transit shelters for a new streetcar route that would convey both the RTA brand and the overall look and feel of the downtown area.

AECOM conceived a transit shelter design to mimic the iconic curved shape of the New Orleans streetcar roof line. The design team fulfilled RTA’s request for branding with integrated imagery of the City’s fleur-de-lis on the back wall. Aware of recent work manufacturing the Koda XT transit shelter canopies for San Francisco, AECOM sought a partnership with 3form.
The shelter needed to mimic the curve of the streetcar and we couldn’t get that from traditional glazing. This material allowed us to achieve the curve.” Robert Burghardt, Project Architect, AECOM
In addition to echoing the iconic streetcar shape, the cold-formed curved custom 12-foot Koda XT panels serve as a watershed for frequent wet weather in the city. 3form encapsulated High Res imagery within the Koda XT material to achieve the RTA branded fleur-de-lis on the translucent Koda XT back wall.

The city challenged Studios Architecture to create an architectural experience within this outdoor space—one that would attract people unlike any other park in the city. Studios Architecture envisioned luminous durable 20' x 20' lanterns that would act as bookends for each end of the park. Studios Architecture’s lantern design needed to capture day light and be luminous at night without being reflective. They needed a strong, durable material that would show minimal seams or hardware.
Studios Architecture reached out to 3form ATG with their concept. Studios wanted a pure, luminous look, and the 3form product met all their criteria. Working collaboratively, 3form provided physical mock-ups, detailed drawings and an innovative idea to custom extrude 20' sheets of Chroma XT to create the lanterns. The luminous quality and appearance of the 3form Chroma XT material made it the ideal choice for this project.
