History• Ernest and Julio Gallo, brothers born in 1909 and 1910

respectively, started the E. & J. Winery in September of 1933

• The brothers got their inspiration from their father, Joseph Gallo Sr., who founded the Gallo Wine Company

• The young men taught themselves the art of wine-making after their father killed himself

• The E. & J. Gallo Winery was opened in Modesto, California, and began as a small building with no bottling facility

• The winery’s production more than doubled in the first year, from 177,847 gallons to 440,000 gallons
