Section Chair Update Dear Quality Colleagues,
In June, our Section Leadership held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Event. It was attended by almost 30 volunteers. It was a very nice evening orga-nized with a very special, personal touch this year from the efforts of our Vice-Chair, Vinay Goyal. We had a chance to recognize the contributions of those who attended and make honorary mention of those who unfortunately were not able to attend. Vinay did a great job in putting together details of the spe-cific contributions for each of the volunteers and how they make our ASQ Sec-tion one of the best.
To put this into perspective, in 2015, we calculated about 2244 hours vol-unteered which could easily stretch
to over 2800 hours volunteered if we include all the instruc-tor hours. Our Member Leaders provide an impressive 69% of those hours, but just as important are the contributions from the support teams such as proctors, arrangements, instruc-tors, etc. It is truly a massive amount of work that goes into organizing and executing actions to make events, services and opportunities possible and available to our members.
Once again, my most sincere “THANK YOU” to all of our vol-unteers, I am humbled and honored to be part of this Team of Excellence.
One last comment about volunteering … even as a volunteer, our members have an opportunity to put their leadership, project management, organizational and improvement skills to work. I can’t say enough about how the skills you gain from working in a volunteer organization can make you a better professional in any field. Volunteers are not paid; therefore, you have to learn the art to be a great motivator. This alone, is one of the greatest benefits.
The second half of 2016 has started and if you attended our dinner meeting in June, you probably heard us announce that our section has climbed to be in the top 3 largest ASQ sections in the world. This is great news, but as your Chair, it also tells me that we have to continue providing those “value added” benefits to our members and we need to keep innovating and recruiting Member Leaders for the future of our section. So, if you have just joined our section and are looking at making a career in Quality, seri-ously consider volunteering in our section to gain skills that will boost your career as well as helping our section continue on this path of growth and excellence.
During the last ASQ World Conference for Improvement and Quality, I sat down with some of the Lead-ers from other sections. Their struggles are mostly on areas where our section strives, areas such as education, monthly meetings, seminars, etc. Some of these sections benchmark from what we do in our section to provide value to your ASQ membership. So, I urge you not to take our programs for granted and make the most of the opportunities.
Speaking of the opportunities that we provide our members, our Volunteer Auditor Program has a tar-get to assist with 8 audits for companies with limited resources (under 200 employees) in Orange Coun-ty. This program is led by Thomas Neal and it has a great synergy where we help companies with limited resources and at the same time benefit our certified auditors to put their skills into practice. If you are interested in finding out more information, please look at our Leadership contact information for Thomas.
We are working on getting our website up to date and providing information for future events for you to save the dates and plan accordingly. If you have any feedback on our website, please contact our Internet Liaison Abel Cortez or shoot me an email.

Waloddi Weibull’s Chameleon
Seminar
Presented by: Dr. Joe DeSimone
Seminar Date & Hours: Saturday, July 16th, 2016 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
(NOTE: Registration commences at 8:30 AM)
Waloddi Weibull developed the Weibull distribution in 1951. This continuous distribution soon became a widely used, versatile analysis tool especially in reliability. The Weibull distribution's popularity resulted from its ability to be used with small sample sizes and its flexibility.
The Weibull’s versatility comes from the shape parame-ter, also referred to as Beta. This is the slope of the line on the Weibull probability plot. The Weibull distribution can be used in a wide variety of situations and dependent on the value of Beta is equal to or can approximate sever-al other distributions.
The Weibull distribution can also be used as an alternative to the Box-Cox Transformation to determine Process Ca-pability Indices or Control Limits for non-normal data. How many times have we done Process Capability studies on inherently non-normally distributed processes (i.e. flatness, minimum wall thickness or plating) and came up with inconclusive results?
The Weibull distribution is also used in Reliability and Fail-ure analysis, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering for manufacturing and delivery times, Hydrology, and even in Weather Forecasting.
Dr. Joe will explore his approach to Weibull Analysis in a manner con-ducive to learning and benefitting by being able to “do it yourself”. As a team, we will generate our own data and then analyze it for reliabil-ity, capability, and make inferences about the population.
As UCLA coach John Wooden used to say “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts”
Our speaker: Dr. Joe DeSimone, CQE, CRE, CQME, SSBB, SSMBB (et al...), PMP, BS, MS, PhD.

Accelerating Innovation
through TRIZ
Seminar
Presented by: Akhilesh Gulati
Seminar Date & Hours: Saturday, August 13th, 2016 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
(NOTE: Registration commences at 8:30 AM)
Presentation synopsis:
Projects of all kinds frequently reach a point where all the analysis is done, but the next step is unclear. The project team must be creative, but common creativity tools that depend on intuition and the knowledge of the members of the team and the dynamics of brainstorming are unre-liable.
TRIZ is a problem solving method based on logic and data, not intuition. TRIZ (theory of inventive problem solving) started in the USSR and is now an international science of creativity that relies on the study of the patterns of prob-lems and solutions.
TRIZ is spreading into corporate use by several parallel paths – it is increasingly common in Six Sigma processes, in project management and risk management systems, and in organizational innovation initiatives. TRIZ users range from international giants like Samsung, HP, Intel, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, etc., to entre-preneurial start-ups.
By attending this clinic presentation, you will NOT just get
“familiar” with TRIZ—you will learn TRIZ techniques that you can ap-ply immediately to your innovation challenges in service/product de-velopment and in quality improvement for systems, services, and products. You’ll solve real problems during the workshop, so that you go back to your organization with the methodology and a rele-vant case study.
Our speaker: Akhilesh Gulati
Akhilesh Gulati is the CEO of Pivot Adapt, Inc. a company focused on Big Data Analytics and a Principal of Pivot Management Consultants helping companies implement change strategies through Lean Six Sigma and TRIZ. He has 25 years of experience in operations and pro-cess improvement, design, lean, Six Sigma, strategic planning, and TRIZ (structured innovation) training and consulting.
Akhilesh has been active with ASQ for over 20 years, is a past chair of Section 702 and most of us know him through his presentations to our Section and his Radical Thinking articles.

Six Sigma DMAIC Approach
‘The Control Phase’
Presented by: Thomas Culhane
Developed as part of the Six Sigma framework, DMAIC is a proven approach for eliminating defects and improving quality-related business metrics. DMAIC and Lean (the combined methodologies are known as Lean Six Sigma) complement each other and are the foundation for continuous improvement in many companies.
The DMAIC approach is simple and practical: Define your problem, Measure where you are and where you want to go, Analyze data to understand the problem, Improve or eliminate the underlying causes, and Control the process for the long run.
By attending this clinic presentation, you will:
Gain an awareness of the overall Six Sigma DMAIC process
Understand why the Control phase is a critical part of the DMAIC process model
Learn about the various tools used in the Control phase
Gain knowledge about the DMAIC - Control phase by the use of Case Studies

Basic TRIZ: Finding creative solutions to
complex problems
Presented by: Akhilesh Gulati
Presentation synopsis:
The immediate future is rife with unresolved open problems. Our quality of life will depend on the decisions we make. Business lead-ers, education think tanks, and politicians list ‘creativity’ and ‘critical thinking; as two of the top skills we need to succeed in our increas-ingly competitive global community. TRIZ is a creative problem solv-ing, analysis and forecasting body of knowledge and application derived from the study of invention patterns in the global patent literature. Beginning in 1946 and still evolving, TRIZ was developed by the Soviet inventor Genrich Altshuller (now deceased) and his colleagues.
TRIZ is rapidly gaining popularity as a robust methodology for defin-ing and resolving difficult contradictions that stand as barriers to product, process and business innovation. While six sigma and lean methodologies have helped organizations gain a competitive edge through reducing variation and non-value added activities, they have not necessarily helped them find innovative solutions or strate-gies using technology forecasting. The presentation will provide a primer on TRIZ, and will also cover examples of how TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) helped find innovative solutions to 'lean' and other challenging problems. Today TRIZ is used to generate creative solutions in a variety of corporate settings under a variety of circumstances.
By attending this clinic presentation, you will be able to…
Explain TRIZ as a problem solving methodology Identify and define problem in terms of contradictions Understand a number of key TRIZ elements, such as:
Functional analysis The Ideal Final Result and Ideality Utilization of Resources
