    I. Writing the Main Idea (10 marks)

    A. Read the following passage. Match the heading of each paragraph. Choose theheadings from the box below and write your answer on the space provided.

    a. We pursue the goal of happiness in many different ways.

    b. Success is the key to happiness.

    c. Ways to increase our stock of happiness

    d. The reasons for losing our happiness.

    e. Seeing the best in ourselves and in others is also a form of happiness.

    f. Happiness is the art of living, the aim and object of our existence.

    HAPPINESS

_____ 1. Without happiness, life is dry and meaningless. With happiness, life

immediately becomes fulfilled and wonderful. Happy people keep themselves happy

because they know the ways to appreciate themselves and to see the humour and

magic in each moment. Those people who take things seriously may lose their

    happiness.

_____ 2. Sometimes when we wonder what we are aiming for, it is helpful to just ask,

Well, will this bring me happiness? Because the ultimate search of all human beings,

the ultimate goal in life is to be happy. We pursue this goal in all manner of ways, whether it be through leisure, careers, wealth, or relationships.

_____ 3. When we pursue limited, superficial or false goals, it is very easy to lose

happiness. We expect happiness to come from the outside, from relationships, from

food from possessions, from travel. Yes, these are forms of happiness, however limited,

yet theyre only temporary. The more we are driven by such forces as greed and desire,

the more likely it is we will lose our stock of happiness.

_____ 4. To be true to the self, know the self and be the self. Then understand what brings

happiness to ones self. It is positive thinking, it is working and fulfilling worldly responsibilities, it is

doing something creative. Once we have understood the happiness that comes from within and as a

result of the manner in which we conduct ourselves and our lives, it is possible to understand how to

share that happiness with others. Mending broken relationships, making amends for the past all

bring a measure of self respect and happiness.

_____ 5. Good wishes and pleasant feelings towards other people give us a life of happiness, but we

need to feel these feelings in ourselves first. Then we can share what we have and give this to

others. Increasing the happiness of others brings happiness to the self, but this cannot be an escape

that is, it is not a substitute for creating internal happiness. People with a naturally happy

disposition are sunny and pleasant to be around. They will attract others with their positive attitude

and uplift the mood of anybody who is feeling a bit low. In the same way, the genuine laughter thatcomes from true happiness is infectious and brings happiness to all.

II. True or False Questions (10 marks)

Landslides in South China kill at least 12

Landslides triggered by torrential rain in southern

China killed at least 12 people and injured 24, while

thousands of residents escaped unhurt after a rain-

swollen river flooded their villages, the government

said Friday, as the region braced for more heavy

    rain.

The landslides occurred Thursday in Wuzhou, a city

in the Guangxi region, during nine hours of heavy

downpour, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The rain began around 1 a.m. (1700 GMT

Wednesday) and caused a series of landslides that

collapsed 1,195 houses, Xinhua said. Some 14,929

    people were evacuated, it said.

In Fujian province, also in the south, the bank of a

rain-swollen river collapsed Thursday morning and

flooded 11 villages while thousands of residents

    were still asleep, Xinhua said.

No injuries were discovered and water levels were

receding, the agency said Friday, adding that the

site of the breech has been plugged.

At least 55 people have been killed and 12 are

missing in Fujian and two other provinces since late

May from heavy rains that have caused floods and

landslides and washed away part of a rail-link

    between Beijing and Hong Kong.

Heavy rain was predicted over the next two days for

southern China and local governments were

preparing for mudslides and landslides, according to

Sina.com, a major Chinese news site.

Changting county in Fujian received more than 9

centimeters (3 1/2 inches) of rain in two hours,

causing the Bashili River to jump its banks andsweep through the 11 villages Thursday morning,

Xinhua said, citing provincial flood control officials.

Some 3,500 families lived in the villages, parts of

which were covered in as much as 2 meters (yards)

    of water, the report said.

Rescue crews, including paramilitary police and fire

brigades, helped evacuate more than 16,000 people

from the area and were reinforcing the river bank

    with sand bags, Xinhua said.

Across southern China, at least 378,000 people have

already been evacuated from the provinces of

Fujian, Guangdong and Guizhou due to floods

prompted by an unusually heavy seasonal monsoon,

the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.

Fujian has been the worst affected, with 28 deaths

since late May and direct economic losses estimated

    at 2.19 billion yuan (US$274 million; euro214

    million).

Guangdong and Guizhou provinces have reported 11

deaths each. Other provinces further inland and to

the north have also reported scattered deaths and

    flood damage.

China suffers hundreds of deaths every year in

floods set off during the June-to-August rainy

season, although the season's first storm arrived

    unusually early this year.

Rivers overflow and water rushes down mountains

stripped of trees by decades of farming and logging,

    often causing deadly landslides.

The rains played havoc on transportation, flooding

streets and requiring thousands of police and

military officers to evacuate residents by boat.

III. Read and answer the Questions (10 marks):

The Paris Opera BuildingWork on a new Opera building began in 1862, on the orders of Napoleon III. The building was

constructed in a mixture of different architectural I styles, including the Renaissance, 2 the Baroque and

the Classic. The building is a symbol of the wealth and confidence of France during the Second Empire.

The large ramp4 on the West side of the building was put there so that the Emperor could drive

directly into the main hall of the Opera. Although the building project started in 1862, the disastrous war of

1870 and a fire in 1873 delayed completion, and the Opera did not open until 1875.

    The architectural plan

    of the Opera was just

    one of the many

    projects of Baron

    Haussmann, who was

    responsible for

    rebuilding much of

central Paris. It was avery ambitious project,

    and the difficulties of it

    were also enormous. A

    special underground

lake had to be constructed to make the foundations of the building stable. The underground lake plays an

important role in Gaston Lerouxs novel.

The Opera was a meeting-place for members of the imperial court and members of the upper

bourgeoisie. In fact, the whole social world gathered under its magnificent domes, columns and statues.

The huge auditorium has five levels, and the stage is the largest in Europe. The imposing facade

contains four allegorical groups: Music, Lyric Poetry, Lyric Drama and Dance. Above it there is an

immense dome. A huge rococo staircase takes spectators to the large foyer which is decorated with

mosaics6 and sculptures. From here, spectators make their way to the various levels of galleries and

balconies. Eight tall columns support the great dome above the hall.

    Answer the questions below:

    a. Who ordered the construction of the Opera?
