ESOL (College Based) 2018 - 2019
For the future you want
ESOL (COLLEGE BASED)
We offer English courses for speakers of other languages (ESOL) and teacher training courses (TESOL) for anyone wanting to start or develop their career in teaching English to speakers of other languages.
If English is not your first language, you can study ESOL courses full time, part time and in the evening. You will learn the language skills, employability and citizenship skills for life and work in Scotland.
Students study for Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) ESOL qualifications, or for other language tests, such as IELTS and Cambridge certificates (CAE, FCE). We have a number of classes at National 5 and Higher level where you will study ESOL and other subjects, such as business, tourism
and IT. These programmes also include a work placement and are designed to help students progress to other college programmes or change their job situations. Some of these classes are specifically for young learners aged 16-19.
We run an English Language Summer School that takes place in July and August, during the Edinburgh Festival.
Our TESOL courses cover methodology and classroom techniques you need to teach second language learners. You can study pre- and in-service teacher training qualifications that lead to Cambridge or SQA certificates. We also design bespoke programmes for groups covering any level or area of teacher training.
OUR FACILITIESIn addition to the main college facilities of libraries, online resources and student support, the ESOL Centre classrooms all have interactive whiteboards. We use specialist software and a wide range of materials and resources to provide the best language learning experience for our students. Average class sizes are between 18-20 (maximum 23).
It’s been a beautiful experience, where I learned a lot, it also helped me to understand which way I would like to follow for my future!
ANTONIO BAIANO NC4B, ENGLISH FOR EMPLOYABILITY
All College Based ESOL classes are accredited by the British Council
IWONA | ESOL (COLLEGE BASED)
When Iwona first came to Scotland and started High school, aged 16, she found it very frustrating. “My English wasn’t good and I felt like a small child again”
A Polish friend at school told Iwona about ESOL courses at Edinburgh College and Iwona started a course in English for Work and Training in 2013. She started to feel more confident as she saw other young people like her who didn’t speak much English. At this time she began volunteering with a Scout group for Polish young people.
In 2014 and 2015 Iwona moved through the NC ESOL for Employability courses for young learners. She completed work placements in a nursery and as a classroom assistant and won the ESOL student of the year for her enthusiasm and progress on her course as well as her dedication to volunteering. As part of her NC course she had to find out more about other college courses and she became more and more interested in a career in childcare.
Iwona is now studying NC Early Education and Childcare. She continues to volunteer with the Scouts, she feels settled in her life in Scotland and has a clear path for her future career.
