PEO’s Government Liaison Program (GLP)

Successes to date:– Held meetings and developed relationships

with over 80 MPPs– Three Annual Queen’s Park Days– Three Candidate Colleges this year– Set up the Ontario Centre for Engineering

and Public Policy (OCEPP)– Recruited over 40 engineers interested in

running in the 2011 Provincial Elections

The GLP was launched in 2005 by PEO to respond togovernment intrusions into the Professional Engineers Act.

Our Goal

Our goal is to elect 11 engineers in the 2011 Ontario Legislature

and

27 engineers in the 2027 Ontario Legislature

(that means you!)

The Ontario Engineering Student Public Policy InitiativeThe initiative was launched at the ESSCO AGM at Ryerson University in 2008.

Annual presentations including:• ESSCO AGM’s:

– Ryerson University/2008– University of Waterloo/2009– University of Ottawa/2010 – with Phil McNeely MPP (Ottawa-Orléans), Parliamentary Assistant to the

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure

• PEO Annual Student Conference:– University of Windsor/2008 – with representatives from the youth wings of each provincial party– Queens University/2009 – with Minister of the Environment John Gerretsen, MPP (Kingston and the

Islands)

• The Canadian Federation of Engineering Students Annual Conference:– McMaster University/2010

• 30th Annual Conference of the Institute for Industrial Engineering National Student Conference:– University of Windsor– with Marc Garneau MP (Westmount-Ville Marie)

• National Conference on Women in Engineering: – University of Western Ontario – with current PEO President Diane Freeman, P.Eng and then PEO President

• Pitched the Ministry of the Environment on a student internship program specifically for engineering students (along with OCEPP and McMaster University)

• Students have attended Ontario Energy Network luncheons as PEO’s guests

• Presentations to groups of students about the greater value engineers can contribute to public policy including:– Running for public office– Getting involved in campaigns at the municipal, provincial and federal levels– Engaging politicians on policy issues affecting engineers and students– Hosting events, seminars and town hall meetings with politicians

• Lectures at:– University of Windsor– University of Waterloo– Ryerson University– University of Toronto– York University– University of Ontario Institute of Technology
