Matuszak said she was genuinely excited about this partnership because it allows students an opportunity to experience the criminal justice field firsthand. President Anderson, along with Chief Deputy Ron Miller of the Riverside County Probation Department and Assistant County Executive Officer Human Resources Director Brenda Diederich, signed the MOU on February 13. RCC PARTNERS WITH RIVERSIDE COUNTY TOESTABLISH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Associate Professor of Administration of Justice Melissa Matuszak directed aMemorandum of Understanding with the County of Riverside to create a first of-its-kindpaid internship opportunity for RCC students studying Administration of Justice Matuszaksaid she was genuinely excited about this partnership because it allows students anopportunity to experience the criminal justice field firsthand

President Anderson along with Chief Deputy Ron Miller of the Riverside County ProbationDepartment and Assistant County Executive Officer Human Resources Director BrendaDiederich signed the MOU on February 13 This partnership offers students an internshipwhile obtaining the opportunity to observe learn and study within the County District

Sponsored by the Foundation for California Community Colleges the Board of Governorsestablished the Exemplary Program Award in 1991 to recognize outstanding communitycollege programs The statewide Academic Senate selects themes related to the awardrsquostraditions and statewide trends Recognizing the importance of providing support to thestudent population as a whole the Academic Senate focused this yearrsquos ExemplaryProgram Award theme on student support services

The Career Closet offers students attire for professional academic and personalopportunities in an equitable inclusive and stigma-free manner The boutique style of theCareer Closet invites students to shop for clothes in a supportive and positiveenvironment Volunteer faculty and staff help with selection ndash matching students with attireand accessories clothes fitting and moral support in order to complement their goals

RCC RANKS IN THE TOP 25 COMMUNITY COLLEGESFOR HISPANICS

Riverside City College is one of the top community colleges in the nation for Hispanicstudents according to an annual list published by the Hispanic Outlook on Education

In the February 2020 edition the magazine ranked RCC in the top 25 community collegesfor Hispanics in two categories 13th in the nation and 6th in the state for granting the mostdegrees to Hispanic students and 12th in the nation and 7th in the state for enrolling thelargest number of Hispanic students

ldquoThe diversity of our student body strengthens RCC and we are committed tohelping every student achieve their highest potential President Gregory Andersonsaid ldquoApproximately two out of three RCC students identify as Latino and the rankingsfrom Hispanic Outlook on Education demonstrate the steadfast commitment of ourfaculty and staff to serving all students in achieving their educational goals Nothing ismore important than providing more access to more studentsrdquo

The C-SPAN Bus (Campaign 2020 tour) is coming to RCC on Thursday March 5 from230 ndash 430pm The Bus C-SPANs mobile classroom and production studio and team willbe on hand to talk to students and visitors about the Bus and C-SPANs in-depth coverageof the political process notably its comprehensive coverage of Campaign 2020

This is a great time to energize students and continue a vibrant community-widediscussion of elections as this kind of civic engagement is one of the healthiest hallmarksof higher education

Participate in this interactive opportunity for students faculty and staff share yourexperiences and tour the Bus

COLLEGE AWARDED APPRENTICESHIP GRANT TOTRAIN SHORT ORDER COOKS

RCC was recently awarded an Apprenticeship grant for the Culinary Arts program tocreate a Short Order Cooks Apprenticeship (RSOCA) and implement the AmericanCulinary Federationrsquos (ACF) apprenticeship program model Funds enable apprenticeswith training necessary to become certified short order cooks The ACFrsquos model combinesclassroom and lab instruction with work-based learning or on-the-job experience Studentsare compensated as they move through the levels of training The RSOCA program provides a minimum of 2000 hours of related instruction andtraining each year for two years to increase the skills of local and regional short ordercooks RSOCA will work with The Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa the ACF EducationFoundation and RCCDrsquos Office of Economic Development to establish and cultivate theprogram An asset of apprenticeships is that they bring educational institutions and businessestogether for common training purposes and workforce preparation This is the second Apprenticeship grant for the Collegersquos Culinary Arts program

NEW FACULTY LECTURE DATESThe 60th Distinguished Faculty Lecture dates have been changed to Tuesday May 5 at330 pm in the Henry W Coil Sr and Alice Edna Coil School for the Arts Concert Hallfollowed by a 445 pm rooftop reception Then on May 7 at 1250 pm the lecture will bepresented at Riverside City College in the Digital Library Auditorium with a receptionfollowing the lecture Dariush Haghighat PhD professor Political Science has beennamed as the 2020 lecturer Flex credit will be offered at both presentations

COIL SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS RECEIVES CITYrsquoSBEAUTIFICATION AWARD

At the 2020 Mayorrsquos State of the City Address on January 20 Riverside Mayor RustyBailey presented RCCD Board President Mary Figueroa with the 2020 City of RiversideBeautification Award for the Henry W Coil Sr amp Alice Edna Coil School for the ArtsAwards are presented to companies or individuals for buildings and facilities within the citythat capture architectural design landscaping building improvements general

Downtown Riverside has been reinvigorated with the completion of Riverside CommunityCollege Districtrsquos Centennial Plaza in 2016 The new Plaza provides state-of-the-artspaces for instruction and brings the community downtown to enjoy the arts Thearchitectural expression of each building responds to their unique function the use oflandscaping glass and lighting create a dynamic structure during the day and evening

The Henry W Coil Sr amp Alice Edna Coil School for the Arts features a 450-seat concerthall accommodating a wide range of performing arts More than 150 performances areheld in the concert hall each year including the Riverside Philharmonic middle and highschool band and orchestra and choir competitions as well as RCC Music departmentconcerts

The California Primary Election is on Tuesday March 3 This election is important it isyour chance to weigh in on the candidates and propositions that matter most to you andyour family As voters we have an equal say in determining our future That is why it is soimportant to exercise your civic duty and vote

RCC was recently awarded an Apprenticeship grant for the Culinary Arts program tocreate a Short Order Cooks Apprenticeship (RSOCA) and implement the AmericanCulinary Federationrsquos (ACF) apprenticeship program model Funds enable apprenticeswith training necessary to become certified short order cooks The ACFrsquos model combinesclassroom and lab instruction with work-based learning or on-the-job experience Studentsare compensated as they move through the levels of training The RSOCA program provides a minimum of 2000 hours of related instruction andtraining each year for two years to increase the skills of local and regional short ordercooks RSOCA will work with The Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa the ACF EducationFoundation and RCCDrsquos Office of Economic Development to establish and cultivate theprogram An asset of apprenticeships is that they bring educational institutions and businessestogether for common training purposes and workforce preparation This is the second Apprenticeship grant for the Collegersquos Culinary Arts program

NEW FACULTY LECTURE DATESThe 60th Distinguished Faculty Lecture dates have been changed to Tuesday May 5 at330 pm in the Henry W Coil Sr and Alice Edna Coil School for the Arts Concert Hallfollowed by a 445 pm rooftop reception Then on May 7 at 1250 pm the lecture will bepresented at Riverside City College in the Digital Library Auditorium with a receptionfollowing the lecture Dariush Haghighat PhD professor Political Science has beennamed as the 2020 lecturer Flex credit will be offered at both presentations

Downtown Riverside has been reinvigorated with the completion of Riverside CommunityCollege Districtrsquos Centennial Plaza in 2016 The new Plaza provides state-of-the-artspaces for instruction and brings the community downtown to enjoy the arts Thearchitectural expression of each building responds to their unique function the use oflandscaping glass and lighting create a dynamic structure during the day and evening

The Henry W Coil Sr amp Alice Edna Coil School for the Arts features a 450-seat concerthall accommodating a wide range of performing arts More than 150 performances areheld in the concert hall each year including the Riverside Philharmonic middle and highschool band and orchestra and choir competitions as well as RCC Music departmentconcerts
