Ethics & MoralityEthics and Morality are synonymous…these

terms define an area of human responsibility.“Good ethics involves at least two things:

identifying intelligently and discernibly what is worthwhile or valuable, and finding ways to distribute that good fairly (Frankena 1973).

The need for ethics arose from conflict…what is yours, mine or ours. It is the difference between how people do act and how people ought to act.

Respect and Consideration for Others

Students and athletes need to learn how to respect fellow students and competitors by the example set by teachers and coaches. Officials should given respect even when they are considered to be wrong. Coaches must show respect to teach respect. Coaches and teachers set the tone for respect and consideration of others from example.

What can we teach students and players…

Respect for Rules and AuthorityWithout rules and authority society could not function.Rules are designed as a guideline of conduct in sport. Accepting the concept of rules as “the letter of the law” or as “the spirit of the law” as compared to the purpose of the rule. What does coaching players or students to “bend the rules” to their advantage teach their students or players?

Ethical issues in teaching…Should teachers focus on students “who want

to learn” and ignore the others?Should the “good equipment” be kept in the

closet for the team to use at practice?Should equipment be purchased for the

“after hours” programs that cater to “the performers” in the area?

Ethical issues in teaching…Should teachers follow the prescribed state

and national guidelines even if it means teaching activities that students don’t necessarily want to play?

Can teachers only teach the activities they enjoy and are already capable of teaching and ignore the needs of the students and the curriculum?
