Computers, just like fire and the wheel are catalysts ofchange, which can be made to work to the advantageor disadvantage of the ones using them. Take the

case of fire for instance, it can provide us warmth or itcan cause damage to life and property.

The same thing goes for the wheel, it can help uscarry heavy loads or it can be used to carry armies to

war. Sadly, computers can also be used for the benefitor downfall of man. For instance, computers are usedto help doctors perform life-saving operations, whichwere not possible before.

Stealing whether you use a gun or a computer is as an immoral act.Every now and then, we hear or read news about people beingrobbed of their money through the use of ATM facilities or throughinside jobs crimes perpetuated by company insiders. Computer

crimes can be carried out by outsiders those who are not in theemploy of a certain company, or by insiders those who actually workas employees in a bank or in a firm. For example, a computeroperator can secretly remove a fractional part of a centavo fromseveral hundred bank accounts to a secret account. If left undetected,

this fund may accumulate thousands and even millions of pesos overthe years. For some, especially those who are intellectually gifted,they tend to look upon such acts as not a crime but a game to beatthe computer system and those who have designed it. In most casesof computer crimes, intellect, not force is needed to commit suchcrimes and this adds a certain feeling of greatness to it.
