PASTOR’S REFLECTION

It seems that the more we talk about love the less we seem to actually understand and know about love. Most of what passes for love in songs, movies and popular culture has very little to do with the love that Jesus talks about in the gospels. In this Sunday’s readings the central theme is love. “Let us love one another, because love is of God; In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.” “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. This is my command-ment: love one another as I love you.” Sometimes we speak of love as if is something particular to Christians, but the New Testament has a much universal view of love. “Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” (1Jn4:16) Love is at the heart of our Christian faith, but love is not exclusive to Christianity. Love is the essence of God and God’s love permeates all of creation. As Christians we are to be exemplars of this love, because we claim that God has blessed us with this love in and through his beloved son Jesus Christ. The gospel of John means something very specific when it speaks of love. The word it uses is “agape”. Agape kind of love is unique in that it is not necessarily mutual. Agape love has one aim: the wellbeing of the other. To love with agape kind of love is to desire and want the best for the other. If the other receives, accepts and responds to my agape kind of love: wonderful, their response is a gift to me. If the other refuses, rejects and does not respond to my agape kind of love, then the prob-lem is with them. Nevertheless, I still continue to love because I am willing and capable to love in this way be-cause this is the way God loves me, in spite of myself. “In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us.” We confuse agape kind of love with love that is ex-pressed in feelings and emotions. Agape kind of love may be accompanied with noble feelings and emotions, but agape love is not a feeling or an emotion. To love some-one with agape kind of love does not mean that I have to like them or have feelings for them. If such feelings eventually do grow, wonderful, but agape love does not require such feelings. Agape love does require having a genuine desire and hope for the wellbeing of the other; not to wish evil or to be indifferent. Agape love is a gift from God; it is something that we awaken to when we realize that in spite of ourselves we are being loved. This is what gives us the capacity and willingness to love oth-ers.

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

Faith Formation Corner “Lord, grant me serenity.”

Stress can result from feeling powerless in difficul-ties, yet change isn’t always up to us. Knowing when to step back and surrender can bring peace. When faced with what we cannot change, try these tips for increasing feelings of serenity and peace. “My peace I give you” (John 14:27). Remember, Jesus does not want us to be troubled by worldly concerns. When you feel yourself starting to worry or stew about a difficult situation (or person), act out your belief that your prayer for resolution will be answered. Substitute positive, cheerful thoughts for negative ones. God is in control. “Rejoice in the Lord always, I shall say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4) “… Be of Good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). While we hope to be strong witnesses of our faith, not every-one will see it that way. Sometimes sharp words or critical comments from others can disturb our peace. Feedback can be helpful, but if anyone gets to you for more than a day or two, consult a fellow Chris-tian whom you trust for a better perspective. “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Take every opportunity to appreciate your place in God’s kingdom. Relish the tasks you have been given, for a job well done brings satisfaction and increased contentment. ******************************************

Students Experience Appreciation of the Arts

Our seventh grade class had a very exciting week experiencing many of the exhibits at both the nearby Hun-tington Library and King Tutt’s Exhibit at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. While at the Hunting-ton Library, students saw many fine and famous pieces of artwork and participated in a workshop where they acted as “scribes” and practiced their scripture writing. The King Tut Exhibit is celebrating its 100-year anni-versary of the discovery of his tomb. This tour is the largest exhibit in the world with over 150 authentic arti-facts. In solidarity with the students and staff of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, who lost 17 people to senseless gun violence on February 14, 2018, the students, faculty and staff of San Gabriel Mission High School held a demonstration and prayer service on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 on the school’s athletic field. The school’s student ministry team led the demonstration and prayer service.

They were not calling for a ban on guns. They were calling for RESPONSIBLE gun ownership. Those who wish to take advantage of the right to own a firearm should be responsible for the safety of these machines.

The students were asking for this because: 1. There have been 208 school shootings since Columbine. 2. Since Columbine, nearly 455,000 people have been directly affected by a school shooting, creating a class of trauma victims that would fill Madison Square Garden 21 times. 3. Assault weapons are legal and unregulated in 41 states. a. 220+ people have been killed in mass shootings with an AR 15 assault rifle since Columbine. 4. 41 states do not require universal background checks for the purchase of fire arms.
