Thank you from Dennis C. Marciuska, Eagle Scout

Thank you to everyone who attended my Eagle Court of Honor. I thank you for your support and encouragement on my Trail to Eagle. Through Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, I’ve learned a lot on the way, and I know there is so much more to experience. I am proud of my Eagle Project and the contribution to my community. I could not have done it without the help and support of my parents and grandpar-ents, my extended family, my Scouting family, friends, pa-rishioners, and community members. May the Helen Nelson Memorial and Helen’s legacy of preserving history at the Mission live forever in our hearts, and may the Helen Nel-son Room serve all members of our com-munity now and in the future. Sincerely, Dennis Marciuska, Eagle Scout San Gabriel Mission Boy Scout Troop 261 December 2016

From the Pastor

Dear Friends,

There are those who demand perfection as a condition for absolute goodness in this world. That was not the con-dition that God place on relation to the world. He chose to come to us in weakness, vulnerability and the messiness of our world. The Incarnation, Christmas, speaks of uncondi-tional love which is already present, at work in our troubled history, in our imperfect world. God chose to pitch his tent, to become one with us, right in the midst of the messi-ness, unjust, and violent world that we have created; not merely to save us from ourselves, but to reveal to you, to us, that in spite of ourselves He loves and believes in us. He trusts in the goodness of His creation. Perhaps, it is better to say that God loves and believes in us not in spite of ourselves, but rather because of our sinfulness and im-perfections. God does not overlook our sinfulness; God sees it and knows it and yet still loves us. It is the experi-ence of finding ourselves loved by God that ultimately makes us willing to be better, to do better; to be the best version of ourselves.

There is a tendency in us to want to sanitize not only God, religion, and the reality of our human condition. When we look upon the nativity scene it looks so clean, so peaceful, and so beautiful. Have you ever been in a stable where animals live, eat, crap, fight and reproduce? A sta-ble is not only smelly, but also dirty, noisy, disorganized and sometimes even violent. And yet, this is the place and environment into which Jesus, the Son of God, is born. The all mighty God becomes, weak, limited, and vulnera-ble in becoming one with us and living in the midst of our human condition; into the messiness, dirty, noisy, violent and, yes, also the beauty of our human condition. It’s the experience of love that makes us aware that we can be bet-ter and to imagine new possibilities for ourselves.

Soon after Jesus is born, Joseph and Mary have to flee, immigrate, to Egypt in order to preserve the life of the child. What a risk did God take in becoming one with us! The Incarnation not only says something about God, but also about how God looks upon us. God is a risk taker; He is willing to give his very life for His creation. He looks upon us with love, compassion, mercy and justice. More important than to say that I, we, love, believe and trust in God, is to know that God loves you, believes in you and trusts in you. And just as He was willing to risk it all for you, are you willing to take a risk on God, on the people God places in your life, with all their messiness, imperfec-tions, dirt, smell and violence? Merry Christmas!

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

Queridos Amigos,

¡Feliz Navidad!

What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human man race;"

John 1:3b-4

OUR GOD WHO LOVES US

No angels, no shepherds, no infant in swaddling clothes -- the gospel reading for the Christmas Day contains none of the familiar elements of the "Christmas story." The opening line of Fourth Gospel (John 1:1) does not take us back to Bethlehem during the reign of Caesar Augustus (Luke 1:10), but rather to "the beginning" -- to the very moment that God brought the cosmos into existence (Gen 1:1). This leads us to inquire into the connection between God's creative activity and the Word becoming flesh -- the connection between creation and the Incarnation. Love is what binds the Persons of the Trinity as one God. But that love like all genuine love is effusive, evocative and ever growing. That love brought the cosmos into existence. It was that divine "big bang" through which all things came into being. The Word becoming flesh was the climax that began "in the beginning" -- the Word through all things were created has become part of creation itself. The Incarnation then was not God's answer to sin but to draw us into the love that is the life of God. More than anything else God wants our love and to love each other. Jesus came into a world that had been disfigured by the failure of the human family to respond to God's love. Jesus coming into the world will remake our world into the world God created it to be. Jesus accomplished all this by becoming part of the creation that needed the transformation that he alone could accomplish. The Word becoming flesh was the climax of what God did "in the beginning." The creation of the cosmos was the move-ment of God's love outside of Godself. The Incarnation was the perfect expression of the fruitfulness and effusiveness of God's love. That love draws believers into the very life of the Trinity. The Word became flesh to make possible for us to be-come children of God (v. 13). The outward movement of God in creation and in the Incarnation draws us into the very life of God so that we can become the persons that God created us to be-persons who can love the God who loves us and wants to be loved by us. This is the message of Christmas.

Looking through the school photos over the years, there is something magical about the Annual Christmas Program that is recognizable in every picture. It is the miraculous spirit of Jesus’ birth that creates special times and memories as students sing in front of their families and friends in the Chapel. Each year the pro-gram is slightly changed and every year brings surprises and delights to the parents, but at the heart of every program is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the love shared by the Holy Family, and the blessings we receive as a Mission Family. From our Mission Family to yours…a very blessed and peaceful Christmas.
