PASTOR’S REFLECTION

¿Qué tan literal hemos de tomar la biblia? Tanto la primera como la segunda lectura hablan de hijos que fueron “entregados” por fe y amor. En la primera lectura Dios le

dice a Abraham que ofrezca a su hijo amado en sacrifi-cio como prueba de su fe. ¿Qué tipo de padre hace esto y que tipo de Dios masoquista le pide a un padre que haga esto? En la segunda lectura Pablo nos dice, “El que no nos escatimó a su propio Hijo, sino que lo entre-gó por todos nosotros.” Otra vez, ¿qué tipo de padre, en este caso Dios, sacrifica a su propio hijo por otros? Si tomamos estas lecturas literalmente muy pronto nos to-paríamos con una imagen distorsionada de un Dios se-diento de sangre. ¿Cómo, entonces, hemos de interpre-tar la historia de Abraham en Génesis y la interpretación de Pablo sobre la muerte y resurrección de Jesús?

Tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Testamento Abraham es un tipo de modelo de fe a imitar. El autor de la historia en Génesis nos trata de explicar lo profun-do de la fe de Abraham y su confianza en Dios. Que mejor forma de explicar tal profundidad que con imagen y lenguaje de sacrificios. La imagen misma es cruel y extrema; la narrativa crea shock, lo cual es el propósito de la historia. ¡Así de profunda era la fe de Abrahán! La interpretación de Pablo sobre la muerte y resurrección de Jesús es todavía más escandalosa. La imagen y lenguaje de sacrificio nos dice que tan profundo es el amor de Dios, hasta el punto de “entregar” a su hijo amado por ti, por nosotros. ¡Así de grande es su amor; así de grande es el deseo de Dios de salvarnos de nosotros mismos! Lo que Pablo dice es escandaloso y ridículo, pero esto es precisamente el contenido de la Buena Nueva que Jesús nos trae.

“Este es mi Hijo amado; escúchenlo.” ¿Y que hemos de escuchar en Jesús? No son solamente palabras a lo que hemos de prestar atención, sino lo que Jesús modela para nosotros. Jesús es la encarnación del amor, compa-sión, misericordia y justicia de Dios. Tal es la profundi-dad de su amor, que Dios lo arriesgo todo al hacerse uno con nosotros; en nuestra propia carne y en nuestra fragi-lidad y vulnerabilidad humana modela y vive este amor. Y hasta qué extremo esta Dios dispuesto a vivir este amor: hasta la muerte misma, y muerte en una cruz. ¡Así es el amor de Dios! ¡Es un escándalo esto; si lo es! Esta es la Buena Nueva del Evangelio: ¡Eres amado/a inmen-samente!

How literal should we take the bible? Today’s first and second readings talk about sons who are “handed over” for faith and love. In the first reading Abra-ham is told by God to offer his son, whom he loved, in sacrifice to God as a test of his faith. What kind of fa-ther would actually do this and what masochist God would ask that of a father? In the second reading Paul says, “[God] who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all.” Again, what kind of father, in this case God, would sacrifice his only son for others? If we take both of this readings literally we will soon find our-selves with a much distorted image of a blood thirsty God. How, then, are we to interpret the Genesis story of Abraham and Paul’s interpretation of the death and res-urrection of Jesus?

In both the Old and New Testament Abraham serves as a model of faith for others. What the author of the story in Genesis is trying to explain to us is the depth of Abraham’s faith and willingness to follow God. What better way to explain such depth of faith than to use the image and language of sacrifices. The image itself is cruel and extreme; the story shocks, which is the purpose of the story. Such was the faith of Abraham! Paul’s in-terpretation of Jesus death and resurrection is even more shocking. The language and image of sacrifice tells us about the depth of God’s love and His willingness to “hand over” his only beloved son for you, for us. Such is God’s love; such is God’s desire to save us from our-selves! Again, what Paul is saying is shocking and ridic-ulous, and yet this is precisely the Good News of the message of Jesus.

“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” And what are we to listen for in Jesus? What we are to listen are not only words, but what Jesus models for us. Jesus is the incarnation of God’s love, mercy, compassion and justice. Such is the depth of God’s love that He was willing to become one with us; in our own flesh and through our own human weakness and frailty he models and lives this love. And to what extreme is God willing to live this love: to point of death, death on a cross. Such is God’s love! Shocking, yes! This is the Good News of the Gospel: You are loved!

El sacramento de la penitencia y la reconciliación: la confesión a veces puede parecer una obligación en lugar de un encuentro con la misericordia de Dios, pero no tiene por qué ser así. Aquí hay algunos consejos para una Reconciliación más ale-gre. Examina tu conciencia. Compare sus acciones con los Diez Mandamientos (Éxodo 20) y las Bienaventuranzas (Mateo 5). Trae al confesionario las formas en que no has estado a la altu-ra de ellos. Confiesa los. Participar en el Sacramento con frecuencia sig-nifica que solo tienes pecados veniales (menores) para confe-sar. Confesarlos La acumulación de pecados veniales puede disminuye nuestra resistencia y allana el camino para el peca-do mortal. ¡La confesión mantiene nuestra conciencia delicada! Expresar contrición y resolución para evitar el pecado. Pida la gracia para continuar y vitar creciendo en santidad y evitando el mal. El objetivo del Sacramento es reconciliarnos con el Dios que nos ama más de lo que podemos imaginar, y que siempre está dispuesto a perdonarnos. How do I make a good Confession? The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation – Con-fession can sometimes feel like an obligation instead of an encounter with God’s mercy, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are a few tips for a more joyful Reconciliation. Examine your conscience. Compare your actions to the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) and Beatitudes (Matthew 5). Bring to the confessional the ways you failed to live up to them. Confess the small ones. Participating in the Sacrament frequently means that you may only have venial (minor) sins to confess. Confess them. Piling up venial sins can lessen our resistance and pave the way to mor-tal sin. Confession keeps our consciences sharp! Express contrition and resolve to avoid sin. Ask for Grace to continue to grow in holiness and avoiding evil. The point of the Sacrament is to reconcile us with the God who loves us more than we can imagine, and who is always eager to forgive us. Confession helps us to come back and begin again. ******************************

We began our Lenten Season this year with a parish school Mass celebrated by Father Ray and Father Paulus. Both the high school and elementary students joined in song and prayer to initiate our Lenten journey and re-flect on our own spirituality as we walk with Jesus. Father Ray gave a wonderful homily and posed a question to everyone to reflect on during Lent… “What can I do to put more love into this world”!

Sister Mara Anne Palomares, O.P.

It is with heavy hearts that the San Gabriel Mission High School Community announces the passing of Sister Mara Anne Palomares, O.P. on February 20, 2018. Sister Mara Anne worked in the Development and Alumni Relations Office for over 6 years as well as in curriculum doing classroom obser-vations. Sister was also a former principal of San Gabriel Mission Ele-mentary School.

Being an alum from Mission High herself, Class of 1957, Sister Mara Anne was a real asset in helping locate lost alumni. She was part of the Alumni Committee and assisted every year with the Scholarship Benefit Luncheon, including helping put baskets together for the silent auction. Sister also participated in Key Club meetings, offering students her en-couragement in their endeavors. If there was a fundraiser at Mission, you could count on Sister to be there.

Sister Mara Anne has touched many lives and we will never forget her kind and caring nature and her dedication to her Alma Mater. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Palomares family as well as the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. Sister would have been pro-fessed 60 years in May 2019.
