The EU CP Mechanism has been activated as a consequence of a request for international assistance from the Haitian Prime Minister, related to the damages that are expected to result from the passage of the Hurricane Tomas. Heavy rainfall is expected to enhance the transmission of cholera in these areas.

In accordance with the provisions of the Financial Instrument for civil protection 50% of the transport costs will be reimbursed by Belgian authorities. The MIC is cooperating closely with the ECHO office in PaP to secure the handover and the monitoring of the use of the assets. 1,008,000 water purification tablets were delivered by Austria and arrived in PaP on 14 December. ECHO MIC has been in contact with all relevant stakeholders and is currently evaluating the situation to verify the needs and to study possible options for action. MIC undertook a preliminary analysis of the situation and concluded that there is no need to provide in-kind civil protection assistance from Europe at this stage of the emergency since the floods are gradually decreasing. However, the MIC decided to present to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) a proposal for an assessment mission to Nigeria to support the government in better managing the consequences of the recent floods, also with a view to upgrade their disaster management capacity. No follow up from Nigerian side, so the emergency was closed.
