EDITORIAL BY THE SECRETARY GENERALWEAKNESS OF IMPACT FACTOR

All scientists pay attention to journal Impact Factors (IF) but it is also clear to everyone that

IF have many weak points Impact factors evaluate the scientific publications but there

is a wide variation in the quality of articles in a single edition Furthermore the IF does

not take into account the number of authors of a single article or the complexity of the

research so all the authors receive the same IF in articles that often have a large number

of authors which may not be justifiable since each role in the published research is not

clarified in at least a note Another inconsistency is the wide variation of the IF among

the disciplines Using IF to compare two researchers dealing with similar but not identical

topics usually rewards the researcher who publishes on topics that follow the mainstream

and therefore with a high probability of citation Furthermore we can consider that

even in a globalized world there are livestock topics that remain of local interest For

example research on dairy sheep or camelids species locally very important do not

fall within the mainstream research areas of the richest countries in terms of research

support industry etc Scientists dealing with such topics have a greater difficulty to see

their papers published in high IF journals The influence of the IF can also constrain the

research to different ends from those that it may have been designed for This notion

always rewards the same researchers or the same research traditions at the expense

of originality innovation and research on topics covered by scientific communities less

numerous and with a smaller number of publications It is obvious that IF was adopted

to have an objective way to judge researchersrsquo careers but disregarding its many weak

points is certainly wrong not only for the accuracy of the judgement but also for the

development of science Corrections to the IF system are needed

Ilan Halachmi

Since 2003 (EAAP Annual Meeting in Rome) Ilan had scientific presentations in 13 EAAP annual conferences Often invited The fact that he has participated in so many EAAP meetings is a testament to the high-quality conference and an excellent meeting point aiming at designing new EU research projects From the time of Bratislava (2012) Ilan has organised countless scientific sessions - initially as a vice-president at the cattle commission led by Abele Kuipers and Marija Klopcic and since 2016 founder and president of the EAAP PLF commission The establishment of the EAAP PLF commission (2016) have required time and ldquopolitics of scienceldquo Seeking for leading scientists in PLF was not an easy task some scientists after applied and elected to the commission left next to their first year conference due to conflict-of-interests if

most registrants tended to congregate with people from their respective companies or countries they were welcoming inquisitive and easy to socialize with over a beer The social program and coffee breaks were also outstanding I was able to meet European colleagues while eating local prosciutto sipping limoncello and drinking in the Adriatic coastline Surprisingly once the conference was over it was nearly impossible to find a good cup of take-out coffee and I was appreciative to be staying with a Turkish host the last few nights of our trip My husband and toddler were also in attendance and it was great to explore Old Town Dubrovnik the Peljesac Peninsula and parts of Bosnia prior to our departure I would like to extend my appreciation to Novus International for funding my trip to such a great conference and a beautiful country I wish to thank EAAP and ADSA for granting me the ability to share my research Finally I thank Novus EAAP and ADSA for continuing to support graduate students in their adventures of speaking networking researching and collaborating

Speciesism anti-speciesism and animal rights by Ceacutedric Sueur

Introduced by Ryder in 1970 ldquospeciesismrdquo is defined as a form of discrimination based on species This concept echoes racism and sexism First formulated to show the superiority (ie the superior rights) that humans attribute to themselves compared to other animals speciesism then took on board the differences that people attribute to other species These species differences are based on multiple criteria such as body size culture proximity utility Whilst we mostly do not like invertebrates compared to vertebrates we still have preferences inside this taxon as we love bees but hate wasps Another instance is based on food culture It is difficult and even impossible for Europeans to eat dogs yet they eat pork Read the full article here

EAAP People Portrait

85degF (29degC) heat and ice cream on every corner the program for the 2018 EAAP annual meeting in Dubrovnik Croatia had to be intriguing enough to attract its attendees inside Lucky for me it was My favorite talks were those focused on local livestock breeds and improving efficiency and sustainability for our producers I appreciated two particular talks that challenged the industry standards The first was part of the opening remarks and touched on revisiting the common (but controversial) practice of removing a dairy calf from its dam immediately after birth The second which is contrary to everything I have been taught was effects of dry period removal These talks certainly encouraged me to think more critically as I move forward in my career I was honored to be given a 30 minute spot at the beginning of the ldquoImproving management practices and feed efficiency in cattlerdquo session to summarize my PhD researchmdashparticularly strategies for selective dry cow treatment I received a lot of great feedback and questions One recommendation by Dr Abele Kuipers was to reanalyze my data to determine whether modification of my somatic cell count cutoffs would change the outcomes evaluated in my trial I have a lot of work ahead of me I was extremely impressed by the graduate student presentations conveying findings of research projects as well as the discussion of the related impacts in onersquos second language was quite impressive As an exclusively English-speaking individual I thought it would be difficult to meet folks and while I found

EAAP People Portrait

Ilan Halachmi

Since 2003 (EAAP Annual Meeting in Rome) Ilan had scientific presentations in 13 EAAP annual conferences Often invited The fact that he has participated in so many EAAP meetings is a testament to the high-quality conference and an excellent meeting point aiming at designing new EU research projects From the time of Bratislava (2012) Ilan has organised countless scientific sessions - initially as a vice-president at the cattle commission led by Abele Kuipers and Marija Klopcic and since 2016 founder and president of the EAAP PLF commission The establishment of the EAAP PLF commission (2016) have required time and ldquopolitics of scienceldquo Seeking for leading scientists in PLF was not an easy task some scientists after applied and elected to the commission left next to their first year conference due to conflict-of-interests if

most registrants tended to congregate with people from their respective companies or countries they were welcoming inquisitive and easy to socialize with over a beer The social program and coffee breaks were also outstanding I was able to meet European colleagues while eating local prosciutto sipping limoncello and drinking in the Adriatic coastline Surprisingly once the conference was over it was nearly impossible to find a good cup of take-out coffee and I was appreciative to be staying with a Turkish host the last few nights of our trip My husband and toddler were also in attendance and it was great to explore Old Town Dubrovnik the Peljesac Peninsula and parts of Bosnia prior to our departure I would like to extend my appreciation to Novus International for funding my trip to such a great conference and a beautiful country I wish to thank EAAP and ADSA for granting me the ability to share my research Finally I thank Novus EAAP and ADSA for continuing to support graduate students in their adventures of speaking networking researching and collaborating

they organise sessions in other scientific societies Today after establishment of an excellent team (Ines Adriaens Jarissa Maselyne Malcolm Mitchell Matti Pastell Radovan Kasarda Shelly Druyan and Stephane Ingrand) and a fluent teamwork we reach a peace-ofndashmind that allow us to emphasis excellent quality of the scientific oral and poster presentations rather than large number of parallel presentations We believe that in science quality brings quantity discussing high-quality scientific presentations during the EAAP conferences will bring quantity in the future An EAAP Commission presidency is a three-year term ending soon Allowing other talented PLF scientists to coin their footprint in the fields of PLF Currently Ilan is the head of the Israeli Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) Lab at the Volcani Centre (ARO) Israel Adjunct professor in Ben-Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev and the PLF section editor in animal an international journal of animal bioscience Ilanrsquos lab has a role in the following EU projects OptiScore (IceRobotics) YoungTrain (EAAP) BioBusiness (KUL) EU-PLF (KUL) OptiBarn(ATB) DairyCare and few more international projects Precision livestock farming (PLF) might be defined as real-time sensing aimed at managing the smallest manageable production unit (a cow an horse a flock of chickens a flock of fish) otherwise known as the sensor-based animal-centric approach (Halachmi et al2019) The ARO PLF lab often apply the following sensing technologies thermal imaging 3D camera vary sensors real-time analysis of animal behaviour animal physiology animal production animal location bolus temperature water intake and watering in hot climate and data science tools such as machine learning and big data However a selection of technology is driven by the livestock

Ethics amp Philosophy
