U.S. stocks closed little changed near a three-month high as the

specter of an interest rate increase this year left investors looking to

Friday’s jobs report for fresh signs the economy is strong enough to

withstand tightening.

Equities swung between gains and losses in the session as a rally in

banks helped erase declines sparked by a renewed selloff in embattled

drugmaker Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. Weakness in

commodity producers also held back stocks for a second day.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slipped 0.1 percent to 2,100.13 at 4

p.m. in New York, after earlier falling as much as 0.6 percent.

Tomorrow’s report on payrolls and unemployment will garner even

more scrutiny as it feeds into the Fed’s assessment of the economy’s

strength.

European stocks were mostly down with the Stoxx 600 losing 0.4%.

Wise-owl pick Adidas AG (ETR:ADS) has raised its full-year sales and

profit targets as strong demand for its Adidas and Reebok brands

powered a strong third-quarter performance. ADS gained 8.6% at the

close of trading in Frankfurt.

The ASX 200 slid below 5200 points yesterday, led down by NAB

trading ex-dividend and a weak lead from Wall St overnight. The recent

rally in US stocks stopped as investors assess the impacts of a

potential rate hike in December. Whilst the timing of the first interest

rate increase remains speculation, Janet Yellen has indicated that

December is a “possibility.”

All sectors fell on Thursday with the exception of Health Care which

was flat. Staples fell 1.1% as both Wesfarmers and Woolworths fell

approximately 1%.

Nab shares hit a two-year low after falling 4.5% yesterday. The other

three ‘big banks’ fell as well.

Glenn Stevens said in a speech that the next rate move will likely be

down reiterating Wise-owl’s guidance that interest rates are expected

to remain low for longer.

feasibility study that values the Salamanca

project at US$871.3m. Wise-owl

Profit for First Quarter

Australia’s largest Bank by market capitalisation Commonwealth

Bank of Australia (ASX:CBA) released its first quarter trading

update today showing cash earnings of $2.4bn.

In an announcement to the ASX on Thursday morning CBA said

that cash earnings were $2.4bn for the first three months of FY16.

Overall income growth was similar to FY15 with “stable”

underlying group net interest margins according to

Commonwealth Bank. Trading income was slightly lower due to a

“slightly negative Derivative Valuation adjustment.”

Bad debts were only 0.13% of its assets during Q1, below market

expectations.
