EvaluationIn this evaluation, I will question the following:

• Did we use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?• How did we use media technologies?

• Were our products effective?

Use/Develop/Challenge?I think that throughout our media products we seem

to have mainly focused on using and developing conventions rather than challenging them. This is

primarily because we thought that by doing this, we were safe with the knowledge that an audience

interested in psychological horrors, would definitely want to watch ours.

POSTER Everything about our poster seems to use the conventions of a film poster. It includes an eye catching picture, a bold, eye catching title, the actors names and a billing block- these all being conventions that

any film poster would follow. Our focus seems to be on the colours used in the poster as we have used, bright eye catching colours in order to emphasise the fire. However, we do seem to slightly go against conventions of posters in ours in that, we have included

something in the poster that is not seen in the trailer nor the magazine cover, which is the idea of the burning note. I think that

this is a really effective way of subtly giving away more of the story, as the audience may not instantly recognise the film from this picture

but when the link is made, they realise it does involve this burning note in some way.

MAGAZINE COVERThe magazine cover definitely follows conventions of

magazine front covers. We researched the ways in which “Empire” magazine tend to set out their covers and

developed some of their ideas. We found that when they do particular ‘special’ issues, they adapt the whole cover to that theme. Therefore, we decided to use the horror

theme and setour whole cover around this theme. Here we subtly linked the flames from

the poster in with the flames on the font of the title of the magazine. In order to make it look realistic, we also added a barcode, issue number

and price. Words such as “Exclusive” and “Free” are also used on magazine covers as using this kind of persuasive language will attract the

audience and make them feel as though they are getting more for their money by buying this magazine. The image on the back advertises our

film perfectly and can be directly linked with the trailer, so if an audience liked the trailer, they are likely to be attracted to buy this magazine.

TRAILERAgain, we were aiming for our trailer to follow the conventions of a

teaser trailer in that we wanted it to have the right effect on the audience when they watch it. We wanted it to literally ‘tease’ the audience and give them a taster of our film, making them want to

watch more. To do this, we included what the majority of teaser trailers do include; short, fast clips taken from the film, the title, a tagline, a voiceover, music and diegetic and non diegetic sound. We felt that

music was a very important element of the film trailer and therefore we fitted it into the action on screen to create tension and a certain

atmosphere throughout the trailer.

Media TechnologiesFirstly, we used hand held video camera’s to film each shot of our trailer. We then used the iMac to edit our trailer and add on any effects. We also used the Windows computers for our trailer, using Microsoft PowerPoint to put together all of our title screens.

To make and edit our poster and magazine front cover, we used Adobe Photoshop which allowed us to do things such as touch up the photographs, enhance certain parts of photographs and also to merge text with the photos.

The media technologies used to blog all of my work included; Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Publisher. I also used Internet Explorer, which included using the following websites:•Slideshare•Animated Generators

Were Our Products Effective? The goal that we set out to achieve was to sell our film to an audience

and I think that the amount of effort we have put into achieving this goal has shown in its effectiveness of having done this. The way in which we have followed and developed conventions I think has effectively helped us to create three media products selling our film. However, the product that I feel most pleased with is the poster as it brings into play the note element of our film, something that is not really shown in our other two products. The poster looks extremely realistic and would definitely catch the attention of our audiences. The trailer I think fulfils conventions of a teaser trailer as it conceals certain parts of our narrative, whilst also giving away the main story and making the audience want to see more because of this. The magazine front cover also successfully sells our film, as it shows Willow on the front cover, covered in blood, and audiences can link this to the trailer and immediately know what film it is advertising. If all three of these products were to go onto market, I think that they would be successful in advertising and selling our product as it would be made so that an audience almost wouldn’t be able to miss it; the trailer would be advertised in cinemas and on television, the magazine sold in every supermarket and newsagents, and the poster advertised everywhere from a bus shelter to shop windows such as HMV.
