PIRAEUS DECELERATES TURKISH PORTSP‹RE ‹Ç‹N ‘L‹MANLARIMIZ’ YANDI!

Despite the Greece factor, the importance of cruise passengers in Turkish tourism gradually increases. Having

received only 581 thousand inbound cruise passengers in 2003, the sector reached 2.2 million in 11 years by

a spectacular increase of 285%. On the other hand, the increase rate remained at 150% in the number of global cruise

sadece 581 bin kruvaziyer yolcuyu a¤›rlayan sektör,

Yenikap›, whichhas been transformed into the new hub of Istanbul, should be inthe forefront.” Mentioning that the cruise sector generate anannual income of USD 400 million in Turkey, which they neverdeem it sufficient, Ulusoy asserts that “Turkey with its tourismpotential must duly benefit from the cruise sector, which rapidlygrows globally and makes extensive contribution in the economicinput of relevant countries. We expect that cruiser ports, whichhelp touristic facilities and congress centers on the coastlinebooked up, should be operational as soon as possible in manycities beginning from Istanbul.

INBOUND CRUISE TOURISTS INCREASED BY 285%

IN 11 YEARS

Having started to grow again after the wounds inflicted by the2008-2009 global economic crises were bound up, the cruisetourism continues the rise in Turkey as well. An overview of thepast 11 years indicates that despite a stall in 2009, the numberof inbound cruise tourists exceeded 2.2 million in 2013. Thegrowth rate for the past eleven years is 285 percent. Taking intoconsideration the definite reservations and preliminary demands,it is expected that the number of inbound cruiser tourists willalso increase by 2-3 percent to 2.3 million in 2014.

The revenues made thanks to cruise tourists also whettedappetites. The average expenditure of a cruise tourist on board fora 7-day trip is USD 1,719. In other words the volume of cruisetourism, from the cruiser perspective alone reached USD 36Billion. This amount does not include the expenditures by touristsoutside the ship. The average expenditure of a cruise tourist istriple that of a normal tourist. For instance, while daily averageexpenditure of a normal tourist in Turkey is at a level of USD 50-55, the same exceeds USD 120 at a transit port, and USD 150 atmain ports. Furthermore, cruiser crews also spend money at adaily average of USD 70 at ports. Based on the foregoing figures, merchants in Turkey earn approximately USD 400 million thanksto the cruiser tourists and crews.

NEARLY ONE-THIRD OFCRUISER TOURISTSPREFER ISTANBUL

30% of inbound cruise touristsheaded for Istanbul, followedby Kufladas› (25.7%) andIzmir (21.7%). This year it isexpected that thesepercentages will change infavor of Kufladas›. This isbecause of the fact thatNorwegian Cruise, one of thelargest cruise tourismcompanies, decided to alterthe course of its ships fromIzmir to Kufladas› by April27th. While 427 ships berthedin Kufladas› last year, thenumber of definite reservationsfor the year 2014 has alreadyexceeded 480. The year-endexpectation is that this figurewill go beyond 500. On theother hand, Izmir port secured121 definite reservations atthe beginning of the year. In2013, 187 ships berthed toIzmir Port.

STRIKE IN GREECEAFFECTED PORTS INTURKEY

The number of inbound cruisetourists is expected to increaseby 2-3%. The most importantreason for the fact that theexpected growth rate remainsat 2-3%, which has been atleast 10% according to the last10-year performance is theeconomic crisis and connectedstrikes in Greece. Global cruisecompanies started to reactagainst the strikes at PiraeusPort, which has been the pointof departure for approximately30% of Mediterranean cruisetours. The tendency of cruisecompanies to alter their courseto the Western Mediterraneanin 2014 and even in 2015-2016, constitutes afundamental hindrance forgrowth in Turkey. This is

cruise tourists and crews will spend USD 18.1 Billion at theberthing ports.

FLORIDA PORT REVENUE: USD 1.5 BILLION

Florida ranks the first by far among the ports which makehighest revenues out of cruise tourism. The total annual incomeof the three cruiser ports in Florida is approximately USD 1.5Billion, where Miami Port is the world leader with an annualincome of USD 605 Million. Barcelona ranks the fourth in theworld, and first in Europe.

2023 TARGET & NEW PORTS

Cruise tourism, which means high-income tourists, is also veryimportant for Turkey. Therefore, the first thing that needs to bedone is to increase the number of ports. The goal of increasingthe number of ports is also included in the ‘Tourism Strategy ofTurkey -2023’ by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.Accordingly, Samanda¤›, Antalya, Kufladas›, Çeflme, Çanakkale,Istanbul Galata, Istanbul Ataköy, Istanbul Zeytinburnu, Samsun, and Trabzon Cruise Ports have already been involved in the plans.

ÇANAKKALE PORT TO BE OPERATIONAL BY 2015

Preliminary work for Çanakkale Cruise Port has already beencompleted. Having been planned in the scope of Troy Peace CityProject, the port, which will be able to simultaneously host 6ocean-going ships, each with a capacity of 6,500 passengers, isscheduled to enter service on the 100th Anniversary ofDardanelles War in 2015.
