Question 1In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product challenges the conventions as the stereotypical view of teenage girls being subservient to men is broken but also to show that they are strong and that they can fight for herself.

- Our opening sequence links in well with the film Twilight and Harry Potter as it has the same genre which is fantasy, both of these films connect to our opening sequence as it uses magic but also other supernatural elements. The reason why films use fantasy as a genre is to make the characters more important as they would have special powers taking that in mind we also made our main protagonist have special powers

- The way our opening sequence differs from the other two films we have broken the stereotypical view that teenage girls being subservient to men as it fights alone in our opening sequence, as most of them show that teenage girls need support and that they can’t do anything without support.

- We have kept to the form of convention as it shows clearly the theme of fantasy as it uses effects for the magic but also we have kept to the convention throughout the opening sequence.

QUESTION 1 – CONVENTIONS

Page 4: Evaluation media2

QUESTION 1 – CONVENTIONS

- In order to use fast paced editing, we took various shot types to create verisimilitude. this has made it attracting to the audience and also builds tension through how it's been shown.

- The use of wide variety camera shots we used are shown from different angles to create cliff hangers for the audiences but also to show how the protagonist struggles in overcoming the situation.

- The sound track had a rock vibe which applies to teen conventions but also we tired to put tense music so it fits in well with the atmosphere of our sequence, which engages the audience more.

Question 2

how does the media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents particular social groups such as teenagers and adults because it uses the genre fantasy because the use of supernatural powers implies it’s directed to a wide range of audiences.

- Our protagonist and antagonist shows the social group teenagers coming from different backgrounds this represents the view of different people and how people are portrayed.

- The other way our media product shows two different gender by the protagonist being a female and the antagonists being male which gives the audience a chance to connect with it equally as it uses both genders and feel more engaged to the opening sequence.

- The positive stereotype we have broken is that the main protagonist is not subservient to men which shows thatthe teenage female is independent and that she doesn’t need help.

- The negative stereotype that the media product portrays is that the male antagonist are always bad and are implied to be always running behind the female character as a danger to the protagonist.

- The TV drama ‘Merlin’ also uses supernatural powers by through the use of different camera shots to show their powers in different ways and how much power each one of them have, this is shown through both genders in the extract.

QUESTION 2 – MEDIA PRODUCT

Wears clothing which relates to teenage clothing

The clothing relates to teenagers as they are wearing hoodies which youths wear most.

Question 3What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The media institution that might distribute our media product, might be 20 th century fox & Warner brothers as they are a wide distribution.

- The media institution that might distribute our media product is 20 th century fox as it’s one of the six major American film studios, this would make our film more popular and this would have more audiences which then will make this film a wide release.

- if I were to distribute this film internationally I would distribute my film through Warner brothers as they are American producer of film and television entertainment, by releasing it internationally It will get a wide range of audiences but also lots of viewers as it’s released in America where most films get released, also if it was released in Britain only it would have received a limited audience.

- The best way of distributing my product would be the internet first as it attracts a wider range of audience and it’s one of the fastest way of knowing of getting the messagearound about the film as it’s quickly to interact with.

- The other reason why I think internet is the best option is because most age rangenormally use internet to find out about films and many other stuff, whereas if it wasdistributed in cinema's first, there would have been a limited of audiences to find out asmost people watch the films online instead going to cinema's, this would be the same casefor television as well.

QUESTION 3 – MEDIA INSTITUTION

Page 7: Evaluation media2

Question 4who would be the audience for your media product?

The demographic groups that I'm targeting as my primary audience are teenagers but also it’s for both genders at the age range of 16 -18 but mostly I think it’s for all teenagers.

- It also covers a wide range of ethnicity for anyone to watch it without feeling discriminated against watching the opening sequence.

- The opening sequence considers the psychographic factors for example it matches the audience’s type of film as it includes cliff hangers to engage the audience to watch more without predicting what will happen next.

- The audience would prefer this opening sequence as it has the genre of fantasy which they would like to watch and it would be something different.

- The secondary audience for this media product would be adults from the age of 19 -35 as it’s for a older range of audience but also both genders, they also prefer this as it would use violence and other elements.

- The way I would reach the secondary audiences is using more supernatural elements in the film but also use more cliff hangers to make it more interesting for the to keep watching I would do this by using different camera shots which are shot in a way to show different view points but also different emotions.

QUESTION 4 – DEMOGRAPHIC AND

PSYCHOGRAPHIC

Page 8: Evaluation media2

Question 5how did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted the audience by the use of locations, Mise-en-scene and the use of different camera shots as it included cliff hangers to engage the audience to watch more.

- The use of Mise-en-scene should be appealing to the audience as that would also relate to the character’s role in the film but also gender.

- Also the use of Mise-en-scene would tell the audience know about the location and also what genre the film might be.

- The audience feedback reveals that the opening sequence was a continuous run but also the most of the story was being told in the opening, therefore the decisions of the audience helped me improve by making the chase in the beginning a bit less than it was before, also we had a library scene in the ending but as the storywas being told too much from the feedback we received we took thatpart out and remained the ending of the sequence a mystery.

- The use of Mise-en-scene related to the teenagers as it uses weaponswhich makes it interesting as teenagers like action based films, which include fighting so that the story line doesn’t look the same, also the use of the location would be better as it was somethingdifferent to the other location used sometimes.

QUESTION 5 - AUDIENCE

Page 9: Evaluation media2

QUESTION 5 - AUDIENCE

- Also the use of weapons signifies to us threat and that something might happen to the protagonist.

- The characters in the opening sequence relate to teenage as the characters themself are teenagers this portrays that the audience and the actors are able to connect and be part of what’s happening in the scene.

- The audience for this particular film would be teenagers as this type of genre would fit in well with what they think and like to watch, because if it was for adults they would not prefer due to some of the Mise-en-scene or maybe how the story is set, and it the audience would be a younger age group it would not be suitable enough as it would use violence in the which would not be appropriate.

- The use of sound links in with the opening sequence as it relates on what happening in the scene but also fits in well with it which makes it more interesting.

- Also the narrative fits in well with teenagers as it active and not something slow which most adults would prefer, this would engage them more in watching.

Page 10: Evaluation media2

Question 6what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

- Using the camera had made me gain more knowledge on the different types of camera shots and how they should be recorded to show the different view point but also the emotion that character is in while shooting.

- Using the mac and iMovie was hard in the beginning as it was a new software but slowing starting to edit the opening sequence I got used to the software but also knowing how to edit different part of the opening sequence.

- For our media group we created a blog, called iCreate Entertainment which we update every week how we were working but also the research we have done, so when making our opening sequence we knew what we need to include to make it interesting for the audience, also first learning the blog was not easy as it was something new but when posting post and learning how to use it, it was easy to use and post.

- Also on Facebook we made a group which we posted post about what were doing and how things are working out, when doing some research on our target audience, we found it easier as most people used it so we got good enough feedback on what we could improve on.

QUESTION 6 - TECHNOLOGIES

Page 11: Evaluation media2

QUESTION 6 - TECHNOLOGIES

- We also made a YouTube channel which we posted our videos we had made of our opening sequence, preliminary task, our evaluation on the work but also some updates on how we are working towards making the final opening sequence and what were doing towards it.

- We used CGI in our opening sequence, but when looking at it and getting feedback from the audience it did not look professional, as the software we used was Adobe After Effects which was new for us as we had never used it but also learning some of it’s features took time, so therefore when using it for our opening sequence it did not look professional enough.

- we also made a poster for our final opening sequence.

- The lighting we had was natural and the sound fits in well with it when playing the opening sequence.

Page 12: Evaluation media2

Question 7Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Preliminary Task

Looking back the preliminary task, I feel I have learnt a lot of different software's but also the different camera shots to make my knowledge much better and learn the different techniques needed when making the preliminary task.

- Before shooting our preliminary task we had made a plan on how the task will be set out and how it will be shot, we did this by a story board as it ill be useful displaying images so we know what we are doing but also we did a script to guide us with the acting and what will happen at what area.

- We had also made a shot-list which was useful as it would tell us what to shoot at what location which made it easier when shooting.

- When shooting our opening sequence, we had looked at our location first to make sure it perfect for the theme and that it suited.

- When shooting our preliminary task and the opening sequence we used a tripod so that the footage comes out properly and when looking at it it’s not shaky.

- We also shot different angles so that we get various different shots to make it interesting but also we shot in a way to give the audience cliff hangers.

QUESTION 7 - PRELIMINARY TASK

Page 13: Evaluation media2

- Shooting from different positions also made our knowledge wider on how to shot for a specific shot but also how to show different emotions through the use of shots.

- The way we could have improved out preliminary task was by changing the sound track as it doesn’t relate to the task but it shows a different theme by the music which gives the effect of horror.

- The other way we could have improved was by recording the shots correctly as both of them show a different view point when it’s meant to show the same.

- When editing on iMovie if we had used more effects on iMovie it would have made it more interesting.

- The way we processed from our preliminary task to our final opening sequence was a difference as we learnt new software's and also how to use them effectively in our opening task, learning new software was a good advantage as it made us improve our opening sequence more which we could make itmore interesting but also engaging.

QUESTION 7 - PRELIMINARY TASK

STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES

As a group we had good strengths within the group which made it easier when shooting the opening sequence but also when editing it and make it the final piece, but we also had weakness which made us lack behind on work sometimes.

Weakness

- We had less time as some of the actors weren’t able to come some of the days but also some of the group members.

- some of the shots weren’t shot correctly so it was hard to edit them.

-

Strengths

- We had a clear plan so we knew what we were doing.

- Good communication through the actors but also the members of the crew.

- Arranged good props which were ready to use.

- One of the group member had good camera skills to shot different shots.
