In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?Examples of how we have used other media products :

The slogan is a very important aspect throughout the promotional package campaign, as it can help to link each individual product together as well as promoting an established audience. A theme that runs throughout the genre of horror is that of child like games, which we reproduced in our own teaser trailer by juxtaposing the vulnerability of such games with the terror of the paranormal. “Hide and Seek” inspired the idea of using this theme as well as having it written in child like hand writing, which creates a sense of unease for the audience as we have taken something sweet and innocent and turned it into something horrific. We also drew inspiration from the “Amityville Horror” poster by having our slogan embedded upon the wall, leaving the audience questioning who put it there and why?

In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Example of how we have used other media products:

Another example of how we used other forms of media products are illustrated throughout our teaser trailer. The images shown to the left are two separate print screens from both our own teaser trailer as well as “The Amityville Horror”. The reason we incorporated flashing images of newspaper articles is because it helps to inform the audience of what has occurred in the past, yet still leaves them in suspense wanting to know more. Titles are a key aspect of teaser trailers, especially in the genre of horror as by not hearing any of the characters voices helps to create tension.

What have you learned from your audience feedback? In order to receive relevant feedback, we created two different resources.

These consisted of questionnaires which got handed out to 90 different candidates as well as creating a facebook page accessible across the world to all those who have a facebook account.

Viral Campaign – Facebook page The facebook page aloud people to comment on both the teaser trailer and

the teaser poster, however all the comments received were very generic and many didn’t pick up upon any specifics in the teaser trailer. Yet all comments received were positive, and insinuated that if the movie was released they would defiantly go and see it. This didn’t particularly allow us to learn much about their opinions of the video, although did show us the successfulness of our teaser trailer especially in portraying the horror genre – as many stated is was very “scary”/”horrific”.

Questionnaire The main thing that has to be taken into consideration when analysing the

results received from our questionnaire, is that most percipients consisted of the male gender. However we did reach our target audience of 16-24 year olds. Although seen as our movie/teaser trailer was certificated as an 18 this doesn’t allow us to engage it with 16 year olds, limiting our target audience to 18-24 year olds.

Analysis of results from questionnaire 1a+b) How effective did you feel the nursery rhyme at the beginning of the trailer was in contributing to the tension built up? Why?

26%

66%

9% Extermly

effectiveVery Ef -fective

Slightly effective

Not ef -fective

This parallel music that was played in our open sequence, in order to create a sense of innocent and suspense amongst the viewers. The results show that this was successful as not one candidate believed it was not effective. It also helped to foreshadow the emphasis upon the dead little twin girls that would appear throughout the teaser trailer. Some of the comments made stated :o Created a weary atmosphere, with a sense of uncertaintyo Caused a sense of uneasiness o It built up tension

Portraying the effectiveness of the nursery rhyme, as within a few seconds we have already been able to create suspense which is a major contributing factor to horror films.

2) Do you think the shot of the bed cover peeling back was held for too long?

This was an important question that both Louise and I required to know the answer to. As it was the longest held shot in the video consisting of around 11 seconds, and we felt that some viewers may find it a bit tedious and would prevent the build up of tension. However the results proved wrong as 81 out of a possible 90 candidates did not think the shot was held for too long.

Analysis of results from questionnaire 6a+b) Did you think the transition from slow edits to fast pace edits was sufficient enough for a horror teaser trailer? Why/ Why not?

92%

8%YesNo

This is not just a key aspect needed to illustrate the horror genre, but also to portray a profitable teaser trailer. As the transition from slow to fast pace edits helps to keep the audience engaged as well as building tension. Once again we proved very successful in what we were trying to achieve with 83 of the percipients agreeing it was adequate and leaving comments such as :o Perfect balance between slow and fast edits oIt was done well enough to help build suspense, and create an atmosphere of horror oEffect impact, that kept me engaged

13) Describe your favourite shot of the teaser trailer and explain why this is.

This question demonstrated the effectiveness of our teaser trailer, as there was no generic shot mentioned. A variety of different shots from different sections of the trailer were described, all for very different reason. This showed that when creating our sequence especially the “haunting” segments we left enough room to allow the audience to have diverse interpretations of them. Some of examples of the shots described included : o When the girl was laying in the bath, as I was curious to know what happened next – it made me jump and was effectiveo The bed cover pealing back – as at first you didn’t know what was happening and then when you realised it created a scary atmosphere. o The bit at the end when the girl was in the window flipping her head around, as I was slightly disorientated and wanted to know what happened to her.

All of the answer read were very useful, as it showed us what kind of scenes an educated horror audience would expect to see in a teaser trailer and the effectiveness of the ones we decided to use.

Analysis of results from questionnaire 14) Would you go watch this film if it was released in cinema?

99%

1%

YesNo

This was properly the most important question asked, as the main aim of a teaser trailer is to entice people into wanting to go watch your film at the cinema. The results for this was just extraordinary, as only one percipient stated they wouldn’t go and see the film and this was due to them not liking horror movies. This a loud us to see the successfulness of our teaser trailer and the impact it had amongst the audience.

Overall the results obtained from our questionnaire proved very optimistic and encouraging. It showed the successfulness of our teaser trailer and portrayed the amount of people that we have engaged into wanting to go and see our film. Although when deciding upon the idea of if next time would you do anything differently? – The questionnaire showed that the majority believed that the teaser trailer we created was rather effective, and changes are unnecessary . I believe this may be due to learning curve we experienced from our year 12 opening sequence to a film, where we also tried to portray the horror genre.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? An example of the use of

Photoshop:

In order to create a realistic poster we decided to cut the details off another horror poster using the Polygonal lasso tool. We then had to create another layer on our poster, and use the move tool in order to paste it and place it in a accurate position.

In order to create a sense of tension and uneasiness on our poster we decided to blacken out the edges, using the blur tool. Then to make the fade happen, we had to select the size of our brush and strengthen of the blur in order to create that peep hole effect.

Another feature of a realistic teaser poster is to have critic reviews on the poster. We used the Horizontal type tool in order to create the text, and changed the front style in order to represent EMPIRE. We used the crop tool when making our stars, and once again cut it off another poster. Then replicated the star four times, and filled in the colour.
