Evaluation Question 2: What have you learned from the audience

feedback?

• To create our survey, we used survey monkey, an online software which enables the user to create their own questionnaires with different types of questions available to make which you can then send via a link online once it is finished should you wish. Here is the first questionnaire which we made, this questionnaire is about the main product, our documentary, where we tried to ask suitable and relevant questions which assessed the overall quality of our documentary and also whether or not it would appeal to our target audience. I asked 25 students from college to answer each of the questions, a suitable sample as it is part of our target audience.

Q1: What do you think this documentary intends to make you feel about body confidence as an issue?

“Body confidence issues can effect everyone and anyone”

“I’m going to be much more careful when joking about weight now!”

As question 1 of our questionnaire on the documentary was an open question, here are examples of some of the answers which we managed to collect from our answers. As clearly shows in these examples, watching the documentary signified to people the importance of the issue we were raising. Perhaps people after watching it started to take the issue more seriously, as some people do take weight issues as a joke and sometimes it can be laughed about. So we learned from the answers of this question that we very effectively got across the seriousness of the issue of body confidence in our documentary which was one of the main points. However it could be suggested that this may mean we were too serious in our approach, and should have used the college setting aspect to add some more humour to the video which may have better attracted our target audience of 16-21 year olds.

Have enough facts and statistics been included in the documentary?

Yes

No

The results from this question were fairly well balanced. Facts and statistics are vital to a documentary the majority of the time so it was important that we made a question on it. I think that the reason why the number of people saying yes compared to no was fairly similar was down to the way we edited the documentary. We had one section of the documentary, about 30 seconds long, which was very fact and statistic heavy, and then didn’t seem to really feature many more examples of this, which may be something that those who said no picked up on more.

How likely is it that you would recommend the documentary to a friend or colleague?

Overall, the results from this question show a very positive reflection on our documentary. With the majority of people choosing for the 7-9 region. This is good as it shows we are appealing to the majority of our target audience within our documentary which is the main aim, as it was made with intentions of appealing towards 16-21 year olds and students.

How could the documentary be improved?

A lot can be learned from the results of this question, especially in terms of what areas of the documentary we could have improved on when editing it. It was clear that more expert interviews was a common answer that we collected, which is understandable considering we only properly included one. However, I feel as if we had overdone it with the expert interviews then the documentary may have become less appealing to our target audience as 16-21 year olds may not find lots of expert interviews entertaining to watch. The fact that images were also fairly common is another highlight, however I feel there isn’t much room for still images in a documentary unless they are absolutely necessary which I don’t think they were in ours.

Do you think the subject title was relevant to the target audience?

Yes – 20

No- 5

The amount of ‘yes’ answers in this question show clearly how well we had chosen our documentary subject I believe. If 20 people out of 25 from a sample of our target audience are agreeing that the subject is relevant to the target audience then it is evident we chose a suitable topic to society nowadays, especially that of our target audience.

Here are the questions that I got participants to answer on the topic of our double page spread.

At first glance do you know that the documentary is about ‘Body Confidence’ ?

Yes – 12

No - 13I got extremely balanced results from this question. The reason that I feel we got results is because of the imagery we used within the double page spread. We used a lot of images from scenes within the documentary that were inside the college. This may have made some people misinterpret the spread and see it as a documentary based on a college or young people in genereal. I think were it not for the clarity and skilled writing used article it would be a lot less clear that the documentary is about body confidence. So we learned from these results that we perhaps needed more relevant images that related more directly to body confidence.

Do you feel the images related to the documentary?

Yes - 17

No - 8

I feel that the results from this questions come from the fact that our documentary featured a lot of footage which came from within the college, and the majority of the images that we used within the double page spread come from stills of this footage. So after watching the documentary seeing these familiar images may instantly make a person agree with this question. I personally feel we needed more images which related to body confidence as a subject rather than the college. However we learned that our choice of images in the double page spread was clearly, suitable and relevant, especially to our target audience.

Would you read this article?

The results from this question perhaps suggest something about the personality of our target audience. Nowadays 16-21 year olds have a typically lower attention span, so to the prospect of a long piece of writing, many people tend to duck away, which potentially may be why the results are so balanced from this question. It would have been a mix of people who would have read the article, enjoyed it and felt that they would read it again, and people who would instantly look at the length of the article and put less effort into trying to appreciate it. So perhaps we may have been better off making the article slightly shorter, whilst still effectively and efficiently saying everything we have to in it.

Do you feel the products link together?

Yes – 25

No – 0

In terms of reflecting the success of our products, this was the most important question and answer to us. The fact that everyone felt the products link together shows that we did a good job at making sure we were consistent and relevant in everything possible that we did, so for this I personally am most pleased with these results.

Here are the questions from the radio trailer questionnaire.

By the end of the advert, did you understand what was being advertised?

Yes – 25

No – 0

Here are more very conclusive results from our radio trailer questionnaire. From this we can conclude that we were very clear in our radio trailer at getting the purpose across and advertising our main product, the documentary, very well. I feel that this is probably true to the work we put into our radio trailer, making sure it was as clear and concise as possible.

Did the advert grab your attention?

Yes

No

I believe the reason for the balanced mix of results is due to the fact that there is a large amount of vox pop answers in the trailer. I feel that the reason for there being such a fairly large amount of no answers is because some people may have lost attention after hearing one too many vox pop answers. Perhaps from this we may learn not to include too many repetitive sounds in a radio trailer, especially considering the average attention span of a 16-21 year old.

Do you like the use of speech from the documentary to create the advert?

Yes – 16

No – 9

Again, it is difficult to determine the reasoning behind these results. It could be suggested that out of my sample, the people who said yes to this question felt that way because when listening they recognised the young voices the vox pop answers in the radio trailer from the documentary, which is something that 16-21 year olds may also do. People who said no may have felt that there was a little too much speech involved. We have learned through this that the speech, for the most part worked, but maybe a little less would work better and attract more of the target audience.
