    Hungry for summer...

...should mean kids anticipating carefree summer

days. But for too many kids, it means a long, hungry

summer. Right here in America, nearly 1 out of

every 4 kids struggles with hunger; and when school

is out, kids miss out on school meals. Share Our

Strength makes sure kids get the summer meals they

need to stay healthy. NO KID HUNGRY. Help make

it happen by donating today at

In the worlds wealthiest nation, no child should grow up hungry,

yet nearly 17 million children in America struggle with hunger.

Thats almost one in four kids whose families lack the means to

put enough nutritious food on the table every day. These kids

simply dont have the food they need to thrive.

In an average month of 2009, a record 34.7 million Americans

received SNAP (food stamp) benefits. Half of them were

children. Food banks reported an unprecedented 30 percentincrease in service demand between the summers of 2008 and

2009. In some communities, the increase was nearly 50 percent,

and across the nation, demand continues to outstrip supply.

The funds raised through Share Our Strengths Taste of the

Nation events are more critical than ever. Even as our economy

progresses in what promises to be a slow recovery, the need for

food assistance will remain high and budgets will remain tight for

many organizations that are fighting hunger in our communities.

Share Our Strengths Taste of the Nation is the nations premierculinary benefit dedicated to making sure no child grows up

hungry. This year, funds raised through Taste of the Nation will

support No Kid Hungry, Share Our Strengths campaign to end

childhood hunger in America by 2015, and continue Taste of the

Nations long legacy of fundraising to fight hunger. Since 1988,

Taste of the Nation has mobilized thousands of volunteers, raised

more than $73 million, and funded more than 1,000 of the most

eective anti-hunger organizations. It is held in nearly 40 cities

across the United States and Canada, and attracts thousands of

    attendees each year.

Thanks to our national sponsors American Express, Sysco, Food

    Network, Brown-Forman Corporation, S.Pellegrino Sparkling

Natural Mineral Water and Stella Artois, and the commitment

of thousands of local sponsors and volunteers, 100 percent of

all ticket sales supports Share Our Strengths eorts to end

childhood hunger. With your support, we have helped enroll

many more eligible children in school breakfast, after-school

and summer meal programs, and their families in SNAP. We

have brought community gardens and farmers markets to

low-income neighborhoods, and helped urban corner storesfind ways to provide a wider variety of aordable, fresh foods

to their customers. We have taught at-risk families how to plan,

shop for and prepare healthy, low-cost meals at home, and have

helped local food pantries, food banks and soup kitchens meet

their pressing demands. And by your very presence here tonight,

you are helping us spread the word about childhood hunger in

America, and how we can end it.

Thank you for helping us make sure that every child gets the

nutritious food they need to live healthy, active lives. Thank you

for sharing your strength in the fight to end childhood hunger.

    Sincerely,

    BILL SHORE

    Dear Taste Guests,

Welcome to Share Our Strengths Taste of the Nation San Francisco,

    2010.

We know that there are many worthwhile causes to support in general

and here in San Francisco and we thank you for choosing to make

Share our Strength one of them. Your attendance tonight truly makes a

    difference.

Food insecurity is a massive problem in the United States right now and

it disproportionately affects children. Often, it is unclear when or where

a childs next meal will be. Share our Strength is focused on creating

programs and policies that will ensure that no kid in America grows up

hungry. In fact, SOSs audacious goal is to create a hunger-free

generation by 2015, and, with your assistance, we are making

    tremendous progress in achieving that.

Tonight would not have been possible without the many individuals and

organizations that are participating. A huge thank you goes to our

national and local sponsors; the chefs, bartenders and wine makers, who

have donated their time and goods; and the numerous in-kind

donations that we are all enjoying here tonight. With their generosity,

100 percent of your ticket tonight is going toward the war against

    hunger.

The proceeds of tonights events go to three local beneficiaries:

Children of Shelters, Foodrunners and Playworks, each of which areworking to ensure that food insecure children get enough to eat here in

    the Bay Area.

We want to extend a huge thank you to our amazing planning

committee for their tireless efforts over the last nine months to make this

event a reality. We wouldnt be here without all of their hard work.

So, eat, drink and enjoy your evening, and, know how much we

    appreciate your generosity.

    Warmly,

    Sharon Goldstein and Jodi Zwiebach

Children of Shelters provides for the educational, physical and emotional needs of the

estimated 4,000 children living in or being served by transitional shelters in San Francisco

Food Runners helps to alleviate hunger in San Francisco collecting perishable and
