Description:
Everybody likes a good story’ was produced at a workshop that was part of Participation Cymru’s All Wales Residential Network 2011, which took place on 9 and 10 June in Llandrindod Wells. The workshop aimed to gather practitioners’ experiences of engagement and to produce a digital story, which was made on free software and put together in a couple of hours for display at the start of the second day. This shows that you don’t need to spend lots of time and money to produce a digital story. For further information on Participation Cymru please go to participationcymru.org.uk. Creuwyd ‘Mae pawb yn hoffi stori dda’ yng ngweithdy a oedd yn rhan o Rwydwaith Preswyl Cymru Gyfan 2011 Cyfranogaeth Cymru ar 9 a 10 Mehefin yn Llandrindod. Roedd y gweithdy yn anelu i gasglu profiadau ymarferwyr ac i greu’r stori digidol ar feddalwedd a oedd yn rhad ac am ddim mewn cwpl o oriau er mwyn ei ddangos ar ddechrau’r ail ddydd. Mae hyn yn dangos nad oes angen gwario llawer o amser ac arian i greu stori ddigidol. Ar gyfer gwybodaeth bellach ar Gyfranogaeth Cymru ewch i participationcymru.org.uk.

Page 6: Everybody likes a good story / Mae pawb yn hoffi stori dda

What are patient digital stories?

Why do we make them? Some theory (not much) Some examples (of stories) Some tips (not many) Some awful jokes (too many) Do it yourself - let’s make a

What is a Patient Digital Story?

Digital storytelling combines one of the oldest skills - the art of story-telling - with the use of new technology

A digital story uses the patient’s words, the patient’s voice and the patient’s photographs to tell their story.

Why use Digital Stories? They deliver a strong, independent

message

They allow patients to talk to patients, staff and managers

They are permanent & portable

They have therapeutic value for patients

Some quick tips about digital stories: Less is more – 3 to 4 minutes or 250 to

300 words

Technical training and specialist software/hardware can produce better results

The story always belongs to the patient and their families/carers

Where to learn. . .

Two training providers in South Wales – Breaking Barriers and Storyworks (See their websites)

They can provide courses to allow you to make your own stories

You can commission them to make stories for you

Page 20: Everybody likes a good story / Mae pawb yn hoffi stori dda

And now it’s your turn

We are going to make a digital story now using your stories and pictures using basic methods

We are going to show these stories at a full Conference session tomorrow morning

I am going to have to stay up all night editing them

Page 21: Everybody likes a good story / Mae pawb yn hoffi stori dda

What happens next

In your Icebreaker Groups, look again at the best/worst/funniest/most disastrous engagement or facilitation experiences you have been involved in.

Decide which story or anecdote you want to put forward

Develop a script to explain what happened – 1 minute maximum talking time!

Page 22: Everybody likes a good story / Mae pawb yn hoffi stori dda

What happens next

You have 10 minutes to finalise the script

Once each Group has nominated and worked up their script, a volunteer from each group will go and record it with Dyfrig

While he is doing this, we will have a short Q & A session about Storytelling

Page 23: Everybody likes a good story / Mae pawb yn hoffi stori dda

To finish. . . . . Thank you for your participation and

patience My favourite Digital Story is by an

American, Richard Cowling It is not really about health. Richard is

a nurse and an academic who works with the victims of domestic violence and abuse

The story is called ‘Beauty’
