Suffering is indeed a mystery. No explanation seems to satisfy our human craving to understand. What does Paul the Apostle mean when he says: We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called to his purpose (Romans 8:28)? These innocent children and their parents suffered for Christ. Suffering, persecution, and martyrdom are the lot of all who chose to follow Jesus Christ. There is no crown without the cross. It was through Jesus' suffering, humiliation, and death on a cross, that our salvation was won. His death won life – eternal life for us. And his blood which was shed for our sake obtained pardon and reconciliation with our heavenly Father.

Dear Parish Family,
Today the Church throughout the world celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family. These days when the family is under attack in different ways, its so important that we do whatever we can to support families. Today we can’t help but think of all of the graces for the Catholic family that will come to us here in this part of the United States with the visit of Pope Francis in September of 2015. The Holy Father, making his first pastoral visit to the United States as pontiff, will be present for the Eighth World Meeting of Families to take place in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from September 22-27. The theme for this event will be: “Our Mission is Love: The Fully Alive Family!” As we journey through 2015 we will plan events and activities to highlight the Catholic Family here in our own parish. We will let you know what these things are as we move forward. For now, let us reflect on the words of Pope Francis in his letter to the President of the Pontifical Council of the Family confirming World Day of Families 2015.
The Holy Father wrote: “Today, as yesterday, the mission of the Christian family is to proclaim, with the strength of the nuptial Sacrament, the love of God to the world. Born and built from this announcement itself is a living family, which puts the hearth of love at the center of all its human and spiritual dynamism. If, as Saint Irenaeus said: “Gloria Dei vivens homo” [“The glory of God is man fully alive …”] a family also, which with the Lord’s grace lives its vocation and mission in fullness, renders glory to Him.”
Archbishop Chaput of Philadelphia said this: “A hallmark of Pope Francis’ ministry has been a genuine love for all people of good will and he has maintained a keen focus on the many diverse challenges that families face globally. I know that the Holy Fa-ther’s charisma, presence and voice will electrify our gathering. Regardless of confessional differences, billions around the world have been drawn to this pope. Our gathering in Philadelphia is open to all who have a generous heart. It has the power to transform, in deeply positive ways, not just the spirit of Catholic life in our region, but of our entire community. It will be a moment unlike any oth-er.”
Our own Archbishop Myers wrote a letter to all of the priests of the Archdiocese: “In anticipation of this event, I would encourage all of our Faithful to use the months ahead as a time of preparation and prayer for this celebration of the Family. My hope reflects that of the Holy Father, Pope Francis who recently prayed, ‘Holy Family of Nazareth, reawaken in our society the awareness of the sacred and inviolable character of the family, an inestimable and irreplaceable good. Let every family be a welcoming place of goodness and peace for children and the elderly, for the sick and lonely, for the poor and needy.” We look forward as a parish in the New Year to strengthen our faith and that of our families. ARCHDIOCESAN SKI WEEKEND FEBRUARY 20-22, 2015
Join us as we travel with the Archdiocese of Newark to Glens Falls, NY for a weekend of fun with teens from all around the Archdiocese. About 300 teens (high school age only) will gather at the Queensbury Hotel for a great weekend of skiing, snowboarding, tubing and fellowship. Fr. Silvano challenges you all to a snow ball fight! Cost is $190 per person (4 to a room) includes bus, hotel, breakfast and dinner and boxed lunch for the ride home. Deposit ($85) are due no later than January 11th, balance is due February 6th. We are in need of an adult (18+) to aid in the Tuesday 6th grade class from Jan. 6 through Mar 3, 2015; a willingness to teach would be a plus but not necessary—please call the Religious Ed Office if you are available.
The media and big stores talk about “Winning Christmas” or “Nailing Christmas”, meaning that if we buy enough stuff, go to exotic places over Christmas, hit all the must-dos of the season, and look fabulous while doing it all, we will have won the holiday and nailed down how to do it the right way. At Saint James the Apostle School, here’s our checklist for “Nailing Christmas”: Wait in Joyful Hope by experiencing Advent at
school, through prayers and lessons focused on this season of anticipation and discovering what Christmas Joy really means
Participate in a School-wide Craft Day where older students help the younger ones create handmade and meaningful gifts which become the simple things treasured by families for years
Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a school day where students in grades 3-8 talk about why it is so important to prepare their hearts for Christ especially at Christmas, and then go over to Church to experience the Sacrament
Spread Christmas Cheer by hosting Breakfast with Santa, and have seventh and eighth graders learn about hospitality and serving by being the “elves” at the event
Create a Christmas Pageant where the story of God’s saving grace is the point of all the celebration and fun
Come to understand that “Nailing Christmas” has already been done because it is what Christ did on Good Friday when he gave his life for us, making all Christmases since such a joyous, happy Win for all of us.

Please note: only non-perishable food can be accepted, fresh fruit and other items needing refrigeration should not be left in the gathering area; clothing and bedding are not acceptable either and for health reasons will be discarded.
467 sandwiches and 55 pounds of meatloaf were collected the weekend of December 13/14. The next collection will take place the weekend of January 24/25, 2015 before the 5:00PM Mass on Saturday evening and between 10:00AM and 12:00PM Noon on Sunday, in the Gathering Area of the Church. Sandwich collections will also take place Monday, January 26 from the School Kitchen between 8:00-11:00AM. Anyone interested in volunteering to help deliver to St. Joe’s please contact Lisa Gillo 908-232-5304 or [email protected].
