Celebrating Our 65th School Anniversary 1953 ~ 2018
"FOR A BRIEF MOMENT I ABANDONED YOU, BUT WITH GREAT COMPASSION I WILL GATHER YOU. IN OVERFLOWING WRATH FOR A MOMENT I HID MY FACE FROM YOU, BUT WITH
EVERLASTING LOVE I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON YOU, SAYS THE LORD, YOUR REDEEMER." A Lent Sourcebook: The Forty Days, Book Two, p.114
A number of years ago, there was a show on television called, "That Was the Week That Was." It parodied events of the previous week. Unfortunately, there was no fun in the week of the two storms. Most of us, including the church, rectory and school, lost power for at least three days and sometimes more. There is no fun in a cold house with no electricity or heat. But we survived it, and it has made me think of contingencies for our parish in case this happens again. It seems that living in New Jersey has made us targets for storms like this. But, we did SURVIVE!!!
As we get closer to Holy Week, the Triduum and Easter, we are reminded in today's Gospel of the anxiety that Jesus must have faced as he approached his impending death. Jesus tried to bring the apostles along slowly regarding his suffering and death because they were too caught up with all that he was saying and doing about bringing the Father's love for them and the other people they encountered.
Sometimes we can get so caught up in our "busy ness" that we lose touch with ourselves and who we are as God's people. At these times, we tend not to listen or pay attention to the Lord, so the church gives us Lent to pay a little closer attention to him and what he calls us to be as his people. Lent is always a good time to step back from all our activities to examine whether we can have better time management so that there is time for God, work, our families and ourselves. If we don't make time for this, then we just keep going with no opportunity to stop and reflect on who we are and where we are going.
Jeremiah reminds us that a new covenant between God and his people will be established, and this has been done through Jesus Christ. His suffering and death showed us this, and his resurrection restored us to the right relationship with our God. How fortunate are we? As we continue to reflect on all of these events, it's also good for us to remember that now it is up to us to continue what Jesus began so that others will also know and believe what we do; that Jesus is the Messiah and Lord who gave his life for us so that we could live as his people! How fortunate are we??
HAPPY LENT!!

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS
Mrs. Caroline Ponterio, Principal
Saint James the Apostle School is a member of the Union County Catholic School League of Forensics. Other schools include Saint Bartholomew Academy, Saint John the Apostle, St. Theresa’s, Saint Joseph the Carpenter and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Under the direction of Mrs. Barbara Noonan, students in Grades 5 to 8 are eligible to compete throughout the school year.
Saint James the Apostle School was pleased to host the 2nd competition of the school year in the catego-ry called Declamation. In Declamation, students are required to memorize a speech or part of a speech that was delivered in real life. Selections must be between three and five minutes in length. Students are judged in two rounds on the following criteria: general poise, memorization, use of gestures, diction and effectiveness of presentation. Semi-finalists are announced and there is the final round of competi-tion.
Four students represented Saint James: Yvonne Agyapong, Natalyah Cadiche, Elizabeth Lopez, and Karla Perez-Palacios. Two students advanced to the final round. Karla earned Honorable Mention with her selection “He for She,” a speech originally delivered by actress Emma Watson at the United Nations in 2014. Natalyah placed 2nd overall with her selection “The Danger of Silence,” a TED Talk delivered by poet and educator Clint Smith in 2014.
Not only were our students competing, but we had many students volunteer as greeters, timers, and score runners as well as providing good, old-fashioned hospitality to our guests for the afternoon. There were 34 students competing in total which brought many visitors to our school. We are grateful to our Home & School Association for coordinating the food and beverage for the competitors and judges dur-ing the program.
The last competition of the school year is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16. This competition will be held at Saint Bart’s Academy in Scotch Plains. Best of luck to our students who are interested in the upcom-ing Duo competition, where students work in teams of two to memorize and present a selection. The Duo competition is the most anticipated competition of the school year.

“Firsts”
The first baby baptized at Saint James was Donald Edward Anderson, who received the sacrament on April 19, 1925, when he was just 16 days old. His parents were John and Florence (Manley) Anderson and his godparents were Edward Cardinal, Jr. and Amanda Wood. The Rev. D.B. Mulcahy baptized Donald.
The first couple to be joined in Holy Matrimony at Saint James was John W. Maloney and Mary A. Romach. Their wedding date was May 3, 1925. The bride’s parents were John and Barbara (Drake) Romach. The groom’s parents were John and Mary (Barny) Maloney. The best man was Dennis Ford and the maid of honor was Catherine Stocker. Rev. D. B. Mulcahy also officiated at this Saint James “first.”
The first time the Sacrament of Confirmation took place at Saint James was on September 27, 1925. On this day, the Rt. Rev. J. J. Collins, SJ administered Confirmation to sixty young adults.
The exact date of the parish’s first First Communion isn’t known, only that it occurred in the spring of 1926, and that 38 children received the sacrament. Rev. Thomas B. Larkin, the first pastor of St. James, celebrated the mass.
Also unknown is the name of the first person to be buried from Saint James, as there are no funeral records for the parish prior to 1953.

Spiritual Adoption Program
THE THIRD MONTH AFTER CONCEPTION
Your baby is quite active in the womb now, although the mother won't feel his or her movements for another couple months. If the mother's womb had a window, you could watch your spiritually adopted baby squint, swallow, and move his or her tongue. Vocal cords are now present, but sound can't be produced yet because of the watery environment. The baby can make a fist if you touch his or her palm, as the skin is very sensitive and reflexes are developing. It is also now distinguishable whether the baby is a boy or a girl, though it's usually a few more weeks before a doctor can determine this with an ultrasound image. The baby is breathing fluid, which will continue until birth. The needed oxygen is obtained through the umbilical cord. The baby you are praying for now weighs about 1 ounce. What a miracle this baby is!
Continue to pray for your spiritually adopted unborn child:
“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love You very much. I beg You to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
