Finally, make sure you write down whatever sense you receive as you ponder the word of God. Keep a prayer journal so that you can review it every now and then to see how much the Lord is doing in your life. He wants to talk with you! He wants you to learn how to hear his voice! How can we have this same experience? What will make the Scriptures leap off the page for us? The Spirit of anointing! When you read the Bible, invite the Holy Spirit to help you. Ask him to open your eyes to his truths in a deeper, more personal way. Read the passage carefully, and make sure you understand what it is saying. Use a commentary or a good study Bible, but don’t stop there. Prayerfully ponder what you have read. Let the words echo in your mind and heart. If a particular verse or even a word strikes you, stay with it and see what happens. Give it time, and don’t worry about the rest of the passage. FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD – Saturday, February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, a joyful event told in the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke. “Led by the Spirit, Simeon and Anna came to the temple, recognized Christ as their Lord, and proclaimed him with joy.” On this feast celebrating Christ, the light to the nations, enough candles are blessed to last the whole year. At St. Matthew’s, candles will be blessed at the 8am Mass. Let us be like Simeon and Anna, recognizing Christ’s presence and carrying His light to every corner of our lives! MASS WITH ANOINTING OF THE SICK – A Mass with Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated at the Cathedral on Saturday, February 9 at 12:10pm. Pre‐registration is recommended. CARDINAL’S APPEAL 2013 A Time for Reflection – This week, please review the Cardinal’s Appeal brochure and the tabloid in today’s bulletin. The theme of the campaign is: “Seek first the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 6:33) The Cardinal’s Appeal is much different than a one‐time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift, payable over ten months.
A significant gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. As you review the work enabled by your contribution, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for His continuing gifts.
Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our archdiocese and give Him thanks for all He has given us.
If you received a pledge form by mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct an in‐pew pledge process at all Masses over the next two weekends. Thank you for your prayerful consideration
and generous response. BRING YOUR OLD PALMS – Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, is celebrated this year on February 13 – less than three weeks away! Please bring your old palms from last Palm Sunday to the Sacristy and give them to the Sacristan. They will be used to prepare ashes for Ash Wednesday. If the Sacristan is unavailable or the Sacristy is closed, please place the palms in the basket outside the Sacristy door.

Classes are held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30pm, with optional pre‐class tutoring between 6 and 6:30pm. Instruction is provided at Level 1 (Beginner) through Level 5 (Advanced). Students may register, in person, through February 5 between 6:30 and 8:30pm, at St. Matthew’s Education Center, 1726 N Street, NW. At registration, each student will be assessed to determine the appropriate class level. The cost of the semester is $40. BOOK CLUB: PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS OF JOAN OF ARC – All are welcome to attend the next meeting of St. Matthew's Book Club on Monday, February 4 as we discuss Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain. Twain writes as Sieur Louis de Conte, identified as Joan's page and secretary. Though a fictionalized biography, Twain extensively researched this book and provided a very detailed and engaging account of the saint's life. THINKING ABOUT BECOMING CATHOLIC? – For those who are thinking about becoming Catholic, St. Matthew’s offers Inquiry, an ongoing conver‐sation about the faith, on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the East Conference Room. Inquiry is the first step for those who are discerning their commitment to full initiation in the Catholic Church. The next Inquiry will be Wednesday, February 6. ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION – Each spring during the Easter season, St. Matthew’s offers adult Confirmation preparation for active, baptized Catholics who already have received their First Eucharist. Preparation includes four Thursday evenings (April 11, 18, 25 & May 2) and one Saturday (May 4). The celebration of adult Confirmation in 2013 will occur at a special Mass on Ascension Sunday, May 12. CAMPAÑA DEL CARDENAL 2013: Tiempo de Reflexión – Esta semana le pedimos revisar el folleto de la Campaña del
Cardenal y la hoja de información que recibirá junto con su boletín hoy. El lema de la campaña es: “Busquen primero el reino de Dios” (Mateo 6:33).
La Campaña del Cardenal es muy diferente a una colecta especial que se realiza de una sola vez. Es una campaña donde usted puede hacer una donación pagadera durante el término diez meses.
Una donación significativa a la Campaña del Cardenal tocará las vidas de muchas personas de una manera muy positiva. Cuando revise la obra que es posible gracias a su contribución, le pedimos reflexionar sobre los dones que Dios le concedió. Él le ha dado todo lo que usted posee. Las donaciones que usted haga a la parroquia, a la Arquidiócesis y a la obra de la Iglesia en todo el mundo deben ser en agradecimiento por los continuos dones que Dios le concede.
Algunas veces es difícil imaginar cómo un solo compromiso de contribución puede ayudar a una organización de la dimensión de nuestra arquidiócesis, cómo puede marcar una verdadera diferencia. Sin embargo, cada compromiso realmente marca una diferencia porque todas las parroquias participan en la campaña y las donaciones de muchos permiten que la Arquidiócesis pueda proporcionar los ministerios y los servicios necesarios.
Nuestras donaciones, en su conjunto, no sólo son muestra de nuestra gratitud a Dios, sino que además nos permiten glorificarlo, haciendo posible la obra de nuestra arquidiócesis, y darle las gracias por todo los dones que Él nos ha concedido.

CELEBRATING BAPTISM Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator at the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 or baptism@ stmatthewscathedral.org. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, at which time they may ask for the priest of their choice to perform the Baptism. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor.

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Of the seven sacraments, the Church classifies two of them as the sacraments of healing: Reconciliation (often known as Confession) and Anointing the Sick. Each of them involves healing the human person; one for our spiritual health and the other for our physical well‐being. How these sacraments have been practiced in the life of the Church has differed over time. This brief summary is about the anointing of the sick. Historically, oil was widely used in the ancient world for a variety of life purposes: lighting, cooking, athletic preparation, special marking and especially healing wounds. So, it is not surprising that the New Testament includes reference to the use of oil, once in Mark’s gospel and another in a letter of the apostle, James. In the life of the early church, the common use of oil for healing was given a special blessing by the bishop to call upon God’s power for the benefit of the sick. During the early centuries, the application of the blessed oil could be done by any of the baptized faithful, since it was primarily for the healing of physical defects. In later centuries, it began to be associated with the dying to heal the soul before death, especially as it was done concurrent with one’s last confession. During these later centuries, this concurrent use of both sacraments led to limiting the sacramental anointing to those who were ordained, in particular, the priest. All sacraments are for the benefit of the individual, but we are all members of the Body of Christ. So, when one member of the body is afflicted, so is the whole body. And as the physical body makes an effort to assist healing the afflicted part, so also the spiritual body is involved in healing the injured member. To reflect this theology, the Church encourages this sacrament to be administered as much as possible in a public way, even if administered in a hospital or nursing home. So, the sacramental ritual provides for celebrating the anointing as part of a community liturgy, such as Mass, much as we do for baptisms, first communions, and the other sacraments. Moreover, the renewed rite now is more inclusive of who can be anointed regardless of age. The anointing can be administered to those preparing for serious surgery, the seriously ill, those suffering serious mental illness, those weakened by old age and others as judged prudent by the pastor (or chaplain). This sacrament recognizes that the anointing is one aspect of pastoral care for the sick. Beyond the sacramental anointing, other visits to the sick are encouraged where scripture and holy communion can be provided to the sick and impaired. The communal connection is symbolized by the pastoral minister being dismissed from the Sunday or other Mass, taking the scripture of the day and a consecrated host from the Mass to those sick or otherwise unable to be at Mass. At St. Matthew’s, our communal celebration of the sacrament of anointing is normally scheduled for October and February; proximate to the feasts of St. Luke and Our Lady of Lourdes who are particularly associated with the sick. It is celebrated in bi‐lingual form to enable our Hispanic parishioners to participate in this special semi‐annual sacramental celebration. At its heart Catholic education means teaching the faith to adults, youth and children in a way that brings them into an encounter with Jesus Christ and prepares them to know, love and serve God.
