CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. August 13 / August 20, 2017 Readings for August 13 you of little faith. (Matthew 14:31) Have you ever seen a toddler take a few wobbly steps and then tumble to the ground? You would probably be shocked if you saw his mother or father angrily rebuke him for falling. That’s not what parents do. They bend down with a smile to lift the child up, embrace him, and encourage him to try again. That’s a great way to understand Jesus’ words to his disciples in today’s Gospel. He loves them. He loves Peter’s bold attempt to walk toward him on the waves. He knows that Peter is taking an important step toward a confident mature faith. He also knows that Peter’s flop into the water won’t be the end of the story. Far from being a failure or a disaster, it will become a milestone on his journey of dis- cipleship. Yes, Peter had “little faith,” but he did have faith! Jesus looks at us with love when he sees our attempts to follow him. He applauds our successes, and he reaches out to help us when we fail. He is quick to come to our aid if we take a misstep or start to doubt. He knows that each step reflects our growth toward maturity. Try something new today, just as Peter did. You probably won’t want to step out onto your nearest body of water, but there are plenty of other things you can do. Just choose one. Think about something that might have arisen in your thoughts recently. Perhaps you would like to help the less fortunate; try it. You could set up one time to volunteer to serve meals to the homeless. You don’t need to have the perfect words to say to the people you’ll meet. Just take that first step. Jesus will be with you, ready to lift you up if you stumble. You may be surprised to find that trying something new strengthens your “little faith” and brings you closer to Jesus. “Thank you, Jesus, that you look at me with love. Make me bold to try to follow you in a new way today. I believe that you will be with me.” Taken from The Word Among Us, July/August 2017 Vol. 36, Number 7: Used with permission. y house shall be called a house of prayer. (Isaiah 56:7) Around the year AD 350, a popular and powerful bishop named John Chrysostom preached a series of sermons on the

Sacrament of Marriage. John had been inspired by St. Paul’s letters to describe for his congregation the beauty of marriage and family life. He called it a wonderful path to holiness. He spoke about the way each spouse is called to be like Jesus—selflessly giving all that they have to their spouse and family and to love their family with the same dedication that Jesus has for his Church (Ephesians 5:25).

Chrysostom told his congregation that God wants every family to see themselves as a “little church,” a sacred place where Christ is honored and where each family member is drawn to deeper holiness. He urged his people to keep their marriages pure and to guard their children’s faith against the corrupting influences of the world. So moving were his sermons that more than 1,500 years later, the Fathers of Vatican II called Catholics to see their families as “domestic churches.”

God wants all of us to see our homes as miniature versions of the Church. Every home is meant to be a place of peace and love, a place of humility and service. It’s meant to be a house of prayer, a place where Jesus is welcomed and reverenced.

May we all stand firm against any philosophy that reduces our homes to marketplaces or to merely functional living situations. May we all find creative ways to incorporate prayer in our homes—whether that means praying one decade of a Rosary each evening or reading a psalm together every morning. May we make it a point to express our love and appreciation to each other with our words and with warm embraces.

It doesn’t take much to make our homes into houses of prayer. It just takes a willing heart and an openness to God’s blessing. Even if we make mistakes along the way, we can be sure that we will make progress.

“Lord, show us how to love each other as you love the Church.” Taken from The Word Among Us, July/August 2017 Vol. 36, Number 7: Used with permission.

CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. August 13 / August 20, 2017

¡Soy yo! ¡No temas!”

Biweekly Summer Edition NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF

THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

How does the Assumption of Our Blessed Mother help our journey?

“But now let us ask ourselves: how does the Assumption of Mary

help our journey? The first answer is: in the Assumption we see that

in God there is room for man, God himself is the house with many

rooms of which Jesus speaks (cf. Jn 14:2); God is man’s home, in God

there is God’s space. And Mary, by uniting herself, united to God,

does not distance herself from us. She does not go to an unknown

galaxy, but whoever approaches God comes closer, for God is close

to us all; and Mary, united to God, shares in the presence of God, is

so close to us, to each one of us.

There is a beautiful passage from St Gregory the Great on St.

Benedict that we can apply to Mary too. St. Gregory the Great says

that the heart of St. Benedict expanded so much that all creation

could enter it. This is even truer of Mary: Mary, totally united to

God, has a heart so big that all creation can enter this heart, and the

ex-votos in every part of the earth show it. Mary is close, she can

hear us, she can help us, she is close to everyone of us. In God there

is room for man and God is close, and Mary, united to God, is very

close; she has a heart as great as the heart of God.

But there is also another aspect: in God not only is there room for

man; in man there is room for God. This too we see in Mary, the

Holy Ark who bears the presence of God. In us there is space for God

and this presence of God in us, so important for bringing light to the

world with all its sadness, with its problems. This presence is

realized in the faith: in the faith we open the doors of our existence

so that God may enter us, so that God can be the power that gives

life and a path to our existence. In us there is room, let us open

ourselves like Mary opened herself, saying: “Let your will be done, I

am the servant of the Lord”. By opening ourselves to God, we lose

nothing. On the contrary, our life becomes rich and great.

—From the Homily of Pope Benedict XVI,

August 15, 2012

How does Faith Direct work?

Faith Direct is a secure system that works directly with your bank or credit card–much the same as other direct payments you may have set up for utility bills or mortgage payments.

When do transactions take place? Transactions take place once per month on the 4th or the next business day. The total amount of your gifts for that current month (both offertory & second/special collections) will be debited in one monthly total. The Cathedral will receive the funds 4 business days later.

Can I stop, increase, or decrease my payment at any time? Yes, by calling Faith Direct at 1-866-507-8757 (toll free) by emailing [email protected], or by logging in to your account through www.faithdirect.net.

How does the Cathedral benefit from my participation with Faith Direct?

The Cathedral will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for their needs.
