ROSTER OF MINISTERS OF THE WORD AND EXTRA-ORDINARY MINISTERS OF COMMUNION

PRAYER FOR HEALING

VICTIMS OF THE ABUSE

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just:

You gave your only Son to save us by the blood of his cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them.

Hear our cries as we agonize over the harm done to our brothers and sisters. Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, so that we may act with justice and find peace in you.We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2018: Today, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday. The theme for this year is "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists are called forth to be commissioned for their ministry.

Let us continue to pray for our catechists as they give their time, talent and treasure for those who seek to know the Catholic faith.

T he charge of Christ‑killing has given the sin of anti‑Ju-daism its greatest impetus. The author of the gospel of

Matthew put a statement on the lips of the angry mob dur-ing the sentencing of Jesus—“His blood be upon us and upon our children” (Matthew 27:25). Tragically, history tore the statement from the context and misused it to justify anti‑Jewish action. When Matthew’s first hearers recalled the prophecy, “If you kill me, you bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city and on its citizens” (Jeremiah 26:15), they were in a time and place far from ours. It was years ago and miles away. Truth lies in what the words mean in con-text. Only on their own terms can we understand them.

Like the people he evangelized, Matthew was not “anti‑Jewish”; he was angry about the way some rabbinic schools interpreted the law and applied it in individual cases: This is casuistry. Legal interpretation was an explosive topic among Jews during almost all of the first century. Matthew’s community, originally Jewish itself and gradually including Gentiles, was at home in the mixed culture of the Hellenistic world. Matthew wrote possibly in Antioch, Syria, between the years 80 and 90. He knew the neighborhood.

Matthew’s hostility to the scribes and Pharisees—especially in the vehement diatribe against them in chapter 23 and in the passion account—has the tone of a ripe casuistic rivalry of schools within Judaism, rather than the tone of extramu-ral anti‑Judaism. He thought if he undercut opposing views he could persuade his hearers better than if he just promot-ed faithful obedience to the law of Christ’s heavenly reign, which was his main interest. Matthew wrote vividly about distorted obedience in order not to risk losing adherents by

sounding “soft.” It was safe to mock other Jews but not to provoke Romans who held the real power. Matthew sought survival. His fear of Rome far exceeded any opposition to scribes or Pharisees.

Like Paul before him and Ignatius after him, the evangelist walked a fine line. He struggled between conservative, pro‑Pharisee followers of Jesus on one side and liberal, pro‑Gentile, gnostic followers of Jesus on the other. He had a casuistic problem with the former, an ethical problem with the latter, and he tried to open a middle way.

When Matthew’s Jesus says, “Woe to you, scribes and Phari-sees, you hypocrites” (23:13), today’s hearer must consider the casuistic context of first‑century schools of legal inter-pretation. Likewise, when Matthew’s Jesus says, “Come, you blessed of my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food” (25: 34f.), today’s hearer must consider the ethical context of Jesus’ call to discipleship.

In fairness a hearer must not interpret Matthew’s story of the passion and resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 26–28) out-side the context of the woes and parables that precede it (23–25). Anti‑Judaism as we understand it was not present in that context. Therefore, Matthew’s passion story does not validate anti‑Judaism. It did so neither for the first century nor for today. MATTHEW’S PASSION IN CONTEXT

Dear brothers and sisters,

Jesus then goes on to make it clear that, those who claim to be His followers, must also take up the way of suffering. “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”

Christianity spread throughout the world because believers did not keep their faith to themselves but professed it and lived it even when they were faced with imprisonment and death. It was precisely the bravery of such faithful women and men who denied themselves and took up their cross to follow Jesus that inspired others to follow their example.

Points for reflection:

1. Who do I say Jesus is?

2. How do I keep my faith alive?

Blessed Sunday to all!

Fr. Gerome D. Hernandez, MSP
