First Sunday of Lent March 10, 2019

“We’re going to the Chapel

and we’re gonna repaaaaair it!”

Admit it. If you’re familiar with the 1964 song “Chapel of Love” by The Dixie Cups, you read the title of this Paro-chial Vicar’s Letter by singing it. Even if you didn’t, now you did! Three weeks ago during the February Vacation, I traveled with four teens from Peabody and two adult chaperones to our sister parish of St. Rose of Lima in Santiago de Los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic. A few of our parishioners here in Peabody know that the pastor of their parish in the DR was eager to establish a relationship with an American parish that could help him better serve the people of his parish and continue the word of the Church to proclaim the Good News to the ends of the world.

The pastor of our sister parish, Fr. Nino Ramos, is not only responsible for the pastoral care of the Church in the “Paraiso” district of Santiago, but is also charged with the pastoral care of 6 (soon to be 11 this month!) mountain side and valley chapels in the surrounding area. One of these chapels, located in the village of “Loma, El Chivo” was in dire need of repair. Fr. Nino wanted his parishion-ers to have a dignified space in which to worship God, and the chapel was severely lacking. There were not prop-er walls in the cement building, rather large segments of wooden paneling that served as both walls and windows. The project, as Fr. Nino envisioned it, would be to tear out and replace these wooden panels with actual cin-derblock walls, and real, glass windows!

As this project was expected to take some time to com-plete, it was started about two weeks before we got down there. When we arrived we were assigned the task of sanding the new walls (with rocks, not sandpaper!), and then subsequent painting the walls.

However, our group was interested in more than just working. We also wanted to encounter our brothers and sisters whom we were serving. We wanted to take seri-ously our call as Catholics to build a culture of encounter, as Jesus made clear from the way he lived and the message he preached.

Our short three days at our worksite provided our group with this opportunity to encounter the other. Even if there was a slight language barrier, our non-Spanish speaking group members were able to interact in our common hu-man language: love. It’s amazing how uniting a bright smile or a friendly wave can be! Of our trip, Joshua Mendonca, one of the teens that went said “The trip to the DR was a very cool and interesting experience for me: it was very entertaining to be in the hills of Loma El Chivo working alongside with parochial vicar, RevKev. I have seen poverty conditions, but I’ve never seen anything like that before and it helped me em-brace my Christian call to serve others. I can’t wait to get involved with campus ministry at my college next year with social outreach projects.”

Would you like to know more about us and our experi-ence? On Saturday March 23 at 5:30 pm in the low-er Church Hall at St. John’s, the group that went to the Dominican Republic will be hosting a Pasta Dinner Fund-raiser in order to share our experience down at our sister parish. We will present a picture slideshow with before, during, and after pictures, and give you the opportunity this Lent to get involved with the ongoing support of our brothers and sisters down in the DR.

As a Church, having entered the season of Lent, we have “the spiritual pillars of Lent at our disposal, we set out on a 40-day journey, a journey of encounter with ourselves, our neighbors and our God. Lent is our time to encounter, to cultivate a spirit of global solidarity. How will you contribute to the culture of encounter this Lent?” (http://www.crsricebowl.org)

We hope that one way will be to support our sister parish. We will be selling a limited number of tickets, at a mini-mum request of $10/ticket after Masses on the first 3 weekends of March. At the Pasta Supper, we will raffle off gift baskets, with the proceeds going to St. Rose of Lima to cover the costs incurred from this project, as well as to provide funds to Fr. Nino for future projects.

Thank you for your support of our Mission Trip, and we hope to see you on the 23rd!

Fr. Kevin

First Sunday of Lent March 10, 2019

First Sunday of Lent March 10, 2019

"Nós estamos indo para a capela

e nós vamos repaaaaair!

Admita.

" (http://www.crsricebowl.org)

Philip Kosloski | Fev 27, 2019 Aleteia

PARISH AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

"They will know we are Christians by our…."How will they know you are a Christian? by the theology you know, your

home, your church attendance, your expressed morality or way in which you serve Him? Jesus said, “By THIS everyone will

know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” -John 13:35, He said this in the context of a moment when he was

doing something so shocking, even his closest followers could not understand it, but it showed the full extent of his love; he

washed the disciple's feet. This was love, demonstrated by hos-pitality before the Passover meal. He didn’t have to do it. Yet

that is the nature of hospitality; unforced acts of love. Hospitality in the Greek translates from the combination of two words: philo (love) and xenos (stranger), or literally, to love the

stranger. Join us and meet the stranger who we are called to love. Come and see the Alpha Program and own your Christi-

anity- Listen, break bread and enjoy a light meal, and then share how you felt about what you heard.

PARENTS: Come to our 10 AM Mass! These are our Family Masses for all kinds of families.

Relax! God put the wiggle in children; do not feel you have to suppress it in God’s house.

All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little

ones to see and hear what is going on in the sanctuary.

Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the priest, altar servers, cantor, lector, etc. Children’s missals are available at the back of the church to help your little ones understand the order of the Mass.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice your responds loudly and clearly. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Need to step out for a moment with your child during Mass? Please do so freely as needed. We have a children's corner with a rocker and kiddie's books. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!”

To all Members of Our Parishes: Remember: the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond. Let them know that they can feel at home in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. They are a reminder that our parish is growing. Your church is their church as well. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encourage-ment to them and to their parents.

NEW! On the following Sundays, our parishes will offer a Children's Liturgy of the Word at our 10 AM Family Masses for all children in grades 1 through 6. Children from both public and Catholic schools are invited.

Dates for Children's Liturgy of the Word (in both parishes):

March 31, and April 14, 2019.

On these Sundays, children will come with family to Mass on these days at 10AM. * Children will leave the main church after the opening prayer. * They will go to the chapel or church hall to hear and learn about the Scripture readings in a way they can understand. * They will return to their families in church at the offertory.

Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or Completing Your Sacraments?

Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? Do you have a family member or friend who is curious about the

Catholic Faith? Are you already Baptized, but haven’t received First Holy

Communion or Confirmation?

Throughout the year, we offer sessions in which we discuss the basic practices and teachings of the Church. We also read scripture together and consider difficult issues of the Faith. At the Easter Vigil, partici-pants may step forward to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, and/or

Eucharist and Confirmation, and are welcomed into the Church. We hope you will consider joining us on your faith journey. Even if

you feel you are not ready, or have questions or reservations about the Catholic Church, we welcome you. There is no pressure or “recruiting,” and we promote open and honest discussion.

To learn more about these sessions (RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults),

please contact Fr. John MacInnis at 978-531-0002.
