IN THE
MID-MON VALLEY.”
Apostle
With your friend Saint John, you remained
with Jesus for that day, for your entire life,
and now throughout eternity. As you led
your brother Saint Peter to Christ and many
others after Him, draw us also to Him.
Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out
of love for Him and dedication in His
service. Help us to learn the lesson of the
cross and to carry our daily crosses without
complaint so that they may carry us to
Jesus.
Amen.

who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of
souls.
Amen.

28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 10, 2021
LITURGY OF THE WORD
Wis 7:7-11
I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of
wisdom came to me. I
preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in
comparison with her, nor did
I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her,
is a little sand, and before
her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I
loved her, and I chose to
have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never
yields to sleep. Yet all good
things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at
her hands. The word of
the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm: Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will
sing for joy!
A reading from the book of Hebrews
Heb 4:12-13
Brothers and sisters: Indeed the word of God is living and
effective, sharper than any two-
edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and
marrow, and able to discern
reflections and thoughts of the heart. No creature is concealed
from him, but everything is
naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an
account. The word of the
Lord. Thanks be to God.
A reading from the Gospel according to Mark
Mk 10:17-30 or 10:17-27
As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down
before him, and asked him,
"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus
answered him, "Why do you call
me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments:
You shall not kill;
you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not
bear false witness; you shall
not defraud; honor your father and your mother." He replied and
said to him, "Teacher, all of
these I have observed from my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved
him and said to him, "You
are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the
poor and you will have
treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." At that statement his
face fell, and he went away
sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to
his disciples, "How hard it
is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" The
disciples were amazed at his
words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children, how hard it
is to enter the kingdom of
God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for one who is rich to
enter the kingdom of God." They were exceedingly astonished and
said among themselves,
"Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For human
beings it is impossible,
but not for God. All things are possible for God." Peter began to
say to him, "We have given
up everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you,
there is no one who has
given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or
children or lands for my sake and
for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times
more now in this present age:
houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands,
with persecutions, and
eternal life in the age to come." The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE
THOUGHTS BY: REV KEV
Greetings from: Fr. Joe
Last week I shared a small insight into the meaning and use of
veils in our liturgy. I’d like to continue the theme of these
liturgical tidbits this
week and talk about the layout of our church buildings. When a
church building is established, the bishop of the diocese comes to
solemnly
dedicate the grounds, the structure and what it holds, making it
suitable for divine worship. We can infer from this solemn
dedication that once we
enter the doors of a church, that something sacred is taking place.
We recognize the sacredness of our houses of worship when we bless
ourselves
with holy water when we enter the church (the fonts for which have
been refilled in each of our churches!). When we enter the church,
we are met
with a distinct separation of the space within. The distinction of
spaces is meant to gather us into, rather, lift us up into the
Divine Presence held
within. These spaces within the church are the narthex (vestibule),
nave, and sanctuary.
The narthex (vestibule) is the first gathering space for the people
of God. As St. Paul tells us in his Letter to the Galatians (3:28)
that there is
neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are
all one in Christ Jesus. We first experience this unity, that which
makes us the
Body of Christ, as we gather for sacred worship. In the narthex, we
gather and greet each other. We come together as a family. There
are no
divisions among us (unless you sit in someone’s seat, perhaps…).
This gathering space prepares us, remind us, and leads us into what
Jesus prayed
for in John 17:20-21, I do not pray for these only, but also for
those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be
one; even as you,
Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so
that the world may believe that you have sent me.
We move past the narthex into the nave. Coming from the Latin navis
meaning “ship,” the nave is where we are led into the Divine
Presence.
Some church buildings very clearly depict this naval image. Next
time you go to the church in Monongahela, look up, it looks like
the inside of a
boat! This is where the Body of Christ is gathered for worship and
sail together into the promised unity won for us by Jesus.
The final space in the church is the sanctuary, the Holy of Holies.
The sacred ministers travel from the nave, the united Body of
Christ, and enter
the place of sacrifice. This separation we can remember most
clearly back in the days of the altar rail. Rail of no rail, the
sanctuary is the place
where we encounter the living God, in Word and Sacrament. I will
save the sanctuary appointments for another week, but this space is
where we
offer our sacrifice of praise to God. From this space we are
welcomed into the Lord’s feast and are fed with true food and true
drink, the most
precious Body and Body of our Lord Jesus. Having gathered
(narthex), been united (nave), under Christ the Head we receive
from God the Father
the benefits of our redeemed relationship with him. Stay tuned for
more tidbits!
The readings for the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B challenge
us to focus on trusting in God instead of in our material
goods.
The first reading tells of valuing wisdom over power and riches.
The second reading reminds us that we will be held accountable
for
our decisions. And in the gospel, Jesus encounters a rich man who
struggles with giving up his material wealth to be a disciple.
Jesus
explains that it is hard for the wealthy to enter the Kingdom of
God.
So, I would ask you to think about the word Detachment. Detachment
from the material things as Jesus challenges the young man
but also detachment from our feelings of resentment, anger,
jealously to that of fears and insecurity.
Looking at that young man you can ask yourself, What things give
you Security to feel at peace, comfortable and perhaps whole.
Look around your lives and perhaps see the clutter in your life
with material things but also the many inner feelings and worries
we
have.
Now ask yourself how can I be a good steward and use my gifts to
bless others?
Many of us hold onto things because we may need it someday or we
have this just in case? So. In these days of Fall as we begin
to
put our summer items away ask yourself do you need all of that
stuff. As we are invited to show respect of all life, how can we
face
our fears and our feelings towards others?
Another area that I think the scriptures are asking each of us, do
we hold onto memories or feelings that just simply need to be let
go
of?
Spiritual Detachment is important but it is to not run from or
avoid experiences but to run towards the experience and fully
embrace
it. We must fully embrace it and experience it but in the back of
our minds remember to tell ourselves that everything is
impermanent, nothing lasts, so don’t cling to any experience, don’t
wish things were different because things never stay the
same.
On the outside we will look and act like a regular person but on
the inside we will find inner peace. If our ego self wants to act
and
dress what it deems as “spiritual” that’s totally fine too, but
just realize it’s not required and doesn’t achieve anything other
than
present an image to the world.
When we look deep within, we will see our true self is already
detached and unaffected by anything. We see happiness come and
we
see it go so our true self can’t be happy. We see sadness come and
we see it go so our true self can’t be sad, the same goes for
everything we experience. Our true self is always detached and at
peace, it’s our ego self that goes on the full roller coaster
of
emotions and that’s perfectly ok. Our ego self is flawed and in
constant movement and unrest.
The gift of the Sacrament of Reconciliation can help with
detachment of our sins, our feelings, our concerns and worry as we
begin
to grow in our trust in God and in ourselves. May we be open to
trust and follow Jesus!
28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 10, 2021
Have you ever been to the original Primanti’s in the Strip
District? How about Pamela’s? Or just spend a weekend morning
walking down
Smallman or Liberty? Though these landmarks that we are familiar
with were not there at the time, they are all within the boundaries
of a former
church called St. Philomena’s which housed two priests who have
gone through the beatification process.
Originally known as “the Factory Church” because it was housed in
an industrial warehouse, St. Philomena’s was a mission of the
Redemptorist’s
who came from Bavaria to Pittsburgh to care for the spiritual needs
of the German Catholics in the Steel City. Soon after its founding,
a priest
named John Neumann arrived and was named head pastor and within a
few years had a church built on the corner of 14
th
and Liberty. At this time
Fr. John Neumann had an associate pastor named Fr. Francis Xavier
Seelos. Eventually Fr. Neumann was called to the episcopacy,
becoming
Archbishop of Philadelphia and Fr. Seelos was named pastor. There
was even a rumor that Fr. Seelos would become bishop of Pittsburgh,
but he
was called to serve by the Redemptorists elsewhere in the United
States. In 1977, Archbishop John Neumann was canonized by Pope Paul
VI and
in 2000 Fr. Francis Xavier Seelos was beatified by Pope John Paul
II.
Often we have to think that saints are distant figures and that we
need to travel to Rome or the Holy Land to connect with them. This
could not be
further from the truth, and God is calling each of us to that same
sainthood. Next time you’re going to La Prima, Penn Mac or
Wholey’s, realize
that you could be taking the same steps as two very saintly men. On
October 5 we celebrated the feast of Bl. Francis Xavier
Seelos.
O God, who made your Priest Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos
outstanding in love,
and comfort those in affliction,
grant, by his intercession,
and for the salvation of mankind.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint Andrews Helping in the Community
Recently Deacon Al & Chris Babich met with the
Superintendent
of Charleroi School District, Dr Ed Zelich. Dr Zelich shared
with
us how Saint Andrews can become more involved with the
school community. The need for winter coats and socks for all
students is essential for the upcoming winter
months. In October we will place collection boxes in the back of
each of our church sites to begin to aid in
helping these students. We are asking that the coats for the
children be gently used, clean and or new, and that
socks be new and in a sealed package. There is also a program
through Charleroi School district that provides
weekend and evening meals for those children in need. The parish
will begin to aid that program through our
food bank ministry. Please keep in mind through your donations,
after school nutritional snacks are needed to
support these families through evenings and weekends.
