OpeningHoly, holy, holy! Lord Godalmighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down theirgolden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

CommunionAdoro te devote, latens Deitas,Quae sub his figuris vere latitas;Tibi se cor meum totum subiicit,Quia te contemplans, totum deficit.

Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur,Sed auditu solo tuto creditur;Credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius,Nil hoc verbo veritatis verius.

GloriaGlory, glory to God. Glory to God in the highest.Glory, glory to God. And on earth, peace to people of goodwill. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, heavenly King, God almighty Father. LordJesus Christ only begotten son Lord God, Lamb of God son of the father. You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy one, you alone are the Lord. You alone are the most high, Jesus Christ. With the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.Amen.

The ConfiteorI confess to almighty Godand to you, my brothers andsisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do;through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, mybrothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Reading IIs 50:5-9a

The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us appear together. Who disputes my right? Let that man confront me. See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong?

Reading IIJas 2:14-18

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if some-one says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.

Responsorial PsalmPs 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10

R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.V1: I love the LORD because he has heard my voice in supplication, Because he has inclined his ear to me the day I called.V2: The cords of death encompassed me; the snares of the netherworld seized upon me; I fell into distress and sorrow, And I called upon the name of the LORD, “O LORD, save my life!”V3: Gracious is the LORD and just; yes, our God is merciful. The LORD keeps the little ones; I was brought low, and he saved me.V4: For he has freed my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet fromstumbling. I shall walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

GospelMk 8:27-35

Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffergreatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”

Christ’s suffering is pre-announced in the first reading from Isaiah, “The Lord God opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.”

HomilyWhy is carrying one’s own cross essential to growing in holiness? One parishioner beautifully wrote areflection recently while being sick in bed for a few weeks, “Yet the cross is the only way to Him. The only. That’s hard for us to hear because part of our human nature is to find alternative ways. If something is not working one way, we try another. We see thatmanifested in using the Waze app to find the way around traffic or substituting ingredients when we don’t have exactly what we need for cooking. But when it comes to Jesus, to eternal life, there is no alternative way. The only way is the cross. These days, it’s even more dif-ficult because our culture wants nothing to do with the cross, let alone Jesus. Their anthem is that suffering should be avoided at all costs. And yes, suffering in itself should be avoided, but sufferingunited to Jesus is everything. Let us remember the truth that there is purpose and meaning in suffering. Suffering is so mysterious because God molds the perfect cross for our specific and unique souls. He knows the right size, the right weight, the right wood so that it purifies us and prepares us for Heaven. St. John Vianney said beautifully, “We must never think from whence crosses come: they come from God. It is always God who gives us this way of proving our love to Him.” The second part shows us why we have crosses. They are a way to prove our love to Him. He already proved His love for us with Jesus dying on the cross. So it’s our turn. When we suffer, we have a choice. We can be like the bad thief and grumble and complain about it, or we can be like the good thief and embrace it and say “I love you Jesus in this suffering!” As soon as we can make this offering, there is a sweetness that comes into our souls. We get a glimpse of how Jesus had so much love to suffer for us.

BenedictionPriest/Deacon: You have given them bread from HeavenResponse: Having all sweetness within itPriest/Deacon: Lord Jesus Christ, You have given us the Eucharist as a memorial of Your suffering and death. May our worship of this Sacrament of Your body and blood, help us to experience the salvation You won for us and the peace of the Kingdom, where You live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.Response: Amen.

The Divine PraisesBlessed be God.Blessed be his holy name.Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man.Blessed be the name of Jesus.Blessed be his most Sacred Heart.Blessed be his most Precious Blood.Blessed be Jesus in the most holy sacrament of the altar.Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception.Blessed be her glorious Assumption.Blessed be the name of Mary, virgin and Mother.Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse.Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the HolySpirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under PontiusPilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
