EASTERN EXOTICA MEETS S

Out of a rich historical mix of rule from both

the Swedish West and the Russian East, Helsinki

has grown into a vibrant European capital with

a character all its own.

As a city that works, Helsinki is the ideal setting

for incentives and events of every description.

Plenty of centrally located, full-service hotels

and meeting facilities are just part of what

makes Helsinki a dedicated incentive and

conference city.

SCANDINAVIAN CHICIn summer, wildly popular ski jet safaris offer

an invigorating alternative to the standard boat

cruises winding along the city's shores or nearby

lakes. Join an ATV safari across ever-changing

terrain, through swamps and marshland up

rocky cliffs, across grassy meadows and back

into the thick of the forest. Endless summer

daylight makes light of time and confining

schedules: go sailing at midnight, sauna at

dawn, what's stopping you? Similarly festivals

of light, ice sculpting, skiing and polar bear

swimming make winter something not to be

shunned but celebrated, embraced.

Winter may be cold, but it's what you do with

winter - and everything it offers - that's im-

portant. The solution (Finns are a solutions-

driven people) is to get out and make the

absolute most of it, to enjoy it. Finns will do

anything and then some given a little ice and

snow, from ice skating, cross-country skiing,

even boarding, in the parks, to ice fishing,

speed skating and swimming in the ice - it's

simply a matter of suiting up in the right

seasonal gear.

EASY TO COME,EASY TO GO

Helsinki is easy to reach by air, rail or sea.

Around 40 airlines operate to Helsinki,

and Helsinki-Vantaa airport boasts more than

180 international landings daily.

Only 25 minutes away from the city centre,

it has been rated among the best by its users for many years in a row.

With more time to spare, you could choose a picturesque ferry

crossing either from Sweden, Germany and Estonia.

Or for an easterly route, you may sample a train ride

from St. Petersburg or Moscow.

In many ways Helsinki is the perfect city: big

enough to enjoy both extensive variety and rich

diversity, yet contained enough to experience

easily, enjoyably and safely. Compact in size,

there's only half a million inhabitants in the city

itself. This translates into a relaxed, friendly and

safe atmosphere that invites delegates to enjoy

and to make use of their stay to the full. Practically

everything in central Helsinki -

hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops

and sights - are within a walking

distance. And if not in the mood

for a stroll, you can always take a taxi or use

Helsinki's efficient public transport. Traffic in a

city this small is a breeze compared to many.

Language is not a problem either. As most Finns

take it for granted that you don't speak their

language, they are glad to make use of their

English or other European languages they mas-

ter. Finland is in fact a bilingual

country, the second official lan-

guage being Swedish.

City Orienteering

Your group is lost in Helsinki. All you have to help

perspectives on even familiar areas. Orienteering

groups are given a communicator that receives

tips on where the next checkpoint is - it can also

be used to surf the internet for the right answers.

In addition to the basics of orienteering, other

elements can include quizzes, adventures and

action. Participants can move about on foot or

What could be more fun than cooking mouth

watering delicacies in the company of your colle-

gues, important clients or dear friends. An excellent

way to get better by the stove while at the same

time enjoying good wine and company. A tempting

proposition, don't you think? The evening starts

off nicely with a salty snack, accompanied by

a glass of bubbly. The idea is that you prepare

a full dinner, so now it is time to put on the aprons

and step into the kitchen! Each 'student' will be

given his own task, so every one can participate

as much as they want. When the work is done

and the sweet smell of delicious delicacies has

made everyone hungry, it is time to enjoy the

self-prepared five-star meal on a table already set

by the hostess.

Wine and Art

The "Wine and Art" package combines informal

wine tasting with artistic painting. Spend a

fun evening combining art, philosophy,

esthetics and taste experiences. At the

atelier a sommelier will present a brief

introduction to the art of wine tasting and

describe the wines that have been chosen

for the evening's workshop. Participants

will then try to capture the essence of each

wine and immortalise them in visual form

by painting on plexiglass with thick acrylic

paints and a palette knife. In this way the unique

multiple sense experience of each participant

is used to create a visual expression. Getting

started is easy, and the creative process

flows in a relaxed manner by relying on

your gut feelings. The duration of the event

is 1-2 hours, during which three different

wines will be tasted, assessed and painted.

The number, quality and price of the wines

can be varied according to the participation

fee.

Supplier: Oy Saaristomaailma - World of Islands Ltd.

The sea is an integral part of Helsinki life, which gives rise to swimming and sailing,

fishing and kayaking, and magical island sauna experiences. As Helsinki is essentially

a peninsula, it's virtually surrounded by sea. Everywhere you turn there's water and

in turn, everywhere you turn on the sea there's an island - one of nature's

marvellously exploited little paradoxes. The sea brings with it rugged shorelines, soft

beaches, near-untouched outlying islands, cruisers and schooners, seaside saunas,

glorious island restaurants, even living maritime fortresses.

THE EMBRACE OF THE SEA

Learn Tall Ship sailing skillson board schooner Inga-Lill

Schooner Inga-Lill is a ship made of pine wood,

tar and linseed oil. She is a unique sailing ship

from the first half of 20th century. The new crew

will learn to sail her while taking part in steering,

navigating and different manoeuvres. For the

accepted crew members there will naturally be

the daily rum tot, not to forget the special archi-

pelago delicacies served by the dinner in the

saloon later in the evening. Schooner Inga-Lill is

a traditional 115-foot (34 m) Finnish sailing cargo

vessel that used to sail stones, sand, timber and

other products from the islands for almost 50

years. Now she is totally restored and her task is

to keep the unique archipelago sailing traditions

alive for many years to come.

Historical Soldiersat Suomenlinna

The city's island fortress of Suomenlinna is both

a living museum and thriving community which

bears witness to Helsinki's strategic significance

and intriguing past. Erected in the mid-18th

century by the Swedish Crown, it was attacked

during the Crimean War by a large Anglo-French

fleet as a Russian stronghold

and a gateway to the coveted

East. Approaching the King's

Gate today you can still be

greeted by Old Garrison

musketeers and explosive

cannon shot.

Suomenlinna's friendly historical soldiers run to

greet the group arriving by ferry at the jetty and

present flowers to the ladies. These jolly fellows

escort the group to the event venue, where a

cannon is fired, a guitar accompanies dancing within

the walls of the fortress, and a little "tar schnapps"

is tried. The soldiers then

escort the group to the

dinner venue, where the

humorous programme

continues with singing,

music, stories and other

delights.

salmon cooked slowly on an open fire with a

traditional archipelago meal while admiring the

beautiful seascape. Sauna Island offers visitors a

place to unwind and clean both your body and

your mind in a unique archipelago setting in the

heart of Helsinki. The island has three saunas:

Traditional Smoke, Aspen Smoke and Landscape

reveals the secrets of Finnish campfire cooking.

Visitors get to feast on the season's best fish,

game and vegetables, as well as authentic bark

bread, all cooked outdoors and enjoyed together

while sitting around the fire. Visitors bring home

with them great memories, as well as new skills

and recipes. This activity can also be organised as

a battle of the chefs. Groups are divided into

smaller teams that compete against each other to

see who can cook the best campfire food, as

judged by a professional wilderness chef.

In Helsinki, you're never far from nature. The city is surrounded, literally, by near untouched

nature offering boundless opportunities for outdoor activities as leisurely or as challenging

as you like. Only in Helsinki are pristine nature and advanced communications technology
