'Clean Up' Australia Day - Pelican Unit'Clean Up' Australia Day - Pelican UnitLast week we went to the beach near our school and we picked up rubbish. We went with all the Pelican Unit.
We had to bring tongs, gloves and a mini backpack, and then we were put into groups. I was put into So�'s
mum's group. Then we went on the beach to go exploring for rubbish with our gloves and tongs.
We found heaps of rubbish and straws. Once we had �nished cleaning up we went to Point Malcolm Reserve
to eat recess and play on the playground. After all that we walked back to school. I really enjoyed Clean Up
Australia Day.

Zoo Excursion - Pelican UnitZoo Excursion - Pelican UnitOn Tuesday the whole Pelican unit went to the zoo. We went on an excursion to the zoo because in Science
we are learning about life cycles and food chains; and in Geography we are learning about habitats. When we
got off the bus at the zoo we got into our group, my group leader was Ms Rozika. All groups had to complete
missions/tasks as they made their way around the zoo.
The �rst mission was to go to the Panda habitat. We had to answer questions about what we could see in
their habitat including the advantages, disadvantages and special features. I �lled out the worksheet with the
help of my team members for this mission.
Next we went to see the Macaw in a bird enclosure for Audrey to record her information for Geography. Once
we were done we headed off to do more missions. I had to make sure my group was focused on completing
the missions. We didn’t get to complete them all as there were a few issues outside of our control.
At 12.15pm all of the P2 groups headed for the Education Centre. In the Education Centre we built a habitat for
a Skink (lizard). We got a sense of what we needed to do when we build our own model of one.
After the Education Centre we visited the Servals (African cat), Orang-utans, the Tiger, Lions and the
Tasmanian Devils. After seeing all of those amazing animals, we ate lunch. While we were eating lunch a bird
show was going on. Once that had �nished we had a quick play on the playground. Not long after this we had
to make our way back to the bus to go back to school.
Our time at the zoo was fantastic! We all had such a wonderful time! I hope we have more fun excursions that
will be as fun as this one was. We have awesome memories. We learnt what needs to be in a habitat and
what animals would like to have.

ATSI STEM CONGRESSATSI STEM CONGRESSOn the 27th and 28th of May, during Reconciliation week our 5 Aboriginal student leaders attended the STEM
Aboriginal Student Congress at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The theme was, Living Two Worlds,
encouraging Aboriginal students to use Aboriginal cultural knowledges in our modern world. Aboriginal people
used scienti�c and mathematical processes through their daily lives before Australia was colonised, our
students are learning about these histories in a modern way, two worlds aligning and working together to
build a successful future for our Aboriginal students.
Braden, Pepper, Ella, Jack and Matty got to experience the Adelaide Zoo, where they learnt about habitats and
sustainability of our native wildlife. With Aboriginal representatives from SA Water, our students also got to be
involved in activities about water sustainability, the future of water recycling and the many uses for water in
our society. They also got to experience some time with an Urban Engineer and learnt about Cultural
Sensitivity and working with Aboriginal people on city developments.
Some of the highlights from the two days was, THE FOOD! The opening and closing ceremony where they
heard from peers and role models like Pantju Nam, a Kaurna man, who was the keynote speaker, he, after
completing high school and achieving an ATAR of 96, Pantju was accepted into a Bachelor of Engineering
(Chemical and Pharmaceutical) at the University of Adelaide. Our students also loved the Hip Hop artist
Jimblah and dancer Amber, who were a part of the opening and closing ceremony. Our students also got to
spend time with Aboriginal elders which was an important cultural learning experience for them.

WASP Student CommissionWASP Student CommissionIn week �ve students from year 5 to 7 (Scarlett, Mitch, Owen, Aiden, Nathan, Ruby, Sam, Dash, Emily, Cayley,
Georgia, Jasmine, Maddie and Delaney) and Ms Clancy attended our �rst Student Commission meeting this
year at Fulham Gardens Primary School. Two high schools and about seven other primary schools joined us
there and we spent the day talking and sharing ideas.
The point of that meeting was for the teachers to step back and for the kids to express their feelings and
what can be done to help kids to learn at schools - (their way). The idea is that we will share these ideas
with teachers and then teachers will try to make them happen.
The things that we agreed on in our group that we would like to happen more at West Lakes Shore are:
· More activities with the Kindy
· More sewing and cooking lessons
· More choice about how we show our learning.

CONGRATULATIONS SENIOR CHOIRCONGRATULATIONS SENIOR CHOIRAssessment was held on Wednesday and the Choir were successful with a B minus. The repertoire is
extremely tricky this year, and we have many brand new year 5 students who have worked hard to make this
result possible. Well done to the handful of new year 7 boys who have joined us this year, and the continuing
year 6 students. A special mention to our soloists – Lucy, Annie, Shyla, Ella and Naomi, who sang beautifully.

READING IS FUNREADING IS FUNOur Year 1 readers are putting their phonic skills into action. Amber came to read her new book with Ms
Press and demonstrated her skills in sounding out, re-reading and correcting her errors. It’s great to make
mistakes as they are valuable and help us to learn. A special award went to Amber who showed great
persistence and achievement in her reading skills. Be sure to get your child to re-read and check for errors
together. Happy sounding out.

FOOTY LIGHTNING CARNIVALFOOTY LIGHTNING CARNIVALOn Saturday 25th May, West Lakes Shore School's year 5,6,7 school football team competed in the Lightning
Carnival at Woodville Oval. We played 4 games in total winning convincingly and earning us a spot in the
grand �nal against Fulham North Primary School. After a great effort by all the boys we managed to beat
Fulham North and proudly bring home the trophy. It was a great moment. A big thank you to Brad our coach

SAPSASA Knockout NetballSAPSASA Knockout NetballOn Friday the 31st of May, 10 year 6/7 girls participated in the school SAPSASA knockout netball tournament.
We played at Woodville Gardens Primary School and played against 3 teams – Largs Bay, Nazareth Primary
and Woodville Gardens.
The �rst game we played was against Largs Bay. They were a competitive team but we were able to beat them
29 – 9.
The next game we played was against Nazareth Primary. They had lots of strong players but our team fought
hard to beat them 21 – 12, our lowest margin of the day.
Finally, we versed Woodville Gardens Primary. We found that a lot of their players had never played netball
before so we used that to our advantage and won 41 – 9.
Because we won all of our games, we are through to Round 2 (which is most likely in Week 10) where we will
be playing against harder teams. It is a challenge we look forward to achieving.

SINGING SENSATION ALYSSASINGING SENSATION ALYSSACongratulations to Alyssa F, from P2, who participated in 'Take the Mic', a national singing competition over
the long weekend. Alyssa sang 'Rain on my Parade' by Barbara Streisland and competed in the 7-12 year old
age group against 16 other competitors. Alyssa won her round and has been invited to sing in the grand �nal
next month in Brisbane. Good luck competing in the �nals Alyssa.
HOMEWORK CLUBHOMEWORK CLUBA few weeks ago my sister Erin and I came up with the idea for a homework club. We wrote a letter to the
principal asking if we could start this club and we were so excited when we received a letter back saying that
our idea had been approved! When we got the letter we started working with Ms Katherine to create some
ideas on where it could be and to put up some posters around the school. We were both very excited to have
our idea accepted and now students will have more time to spend at home with their family.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS - 17 -23 August 2019BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS - 17 -23 August 2019Each year schools in Australia celebrate Children’s Book Week. The aim is to encourage a love of reading and
promote books of excellence for young people. Short lists of recently published books are released and on the
Friday immediately before Book Week, the Book of the Year and winners in various categories are
announced.
At school, the short-listed books will be on display in the Resource Centre and teachers reading them to
classes during the term. We also have a second copy of these books in special chests to be used in
classrooms.
The Book Week theme this year is “Reading is my Secret Power!” We will be celebrating by:
· Having a Book Week Parade/Assembly on Wednesday, 21st August, 9:30am on the asphalt, weather
permitting. Students are asked to dress as their favourite book character. Parents are welcome to join us for
the parade/assembly. We are encouraging students to use their imagination and create/design their
costume.
· Buddy classes will also be participating in a special activity in the Resource Centre during Book Week.
· Book Week art/craft activities will be offered in the Resource Centre each lunch time during the week.
