steers (7m) reach £760 apiece, a price also attained for two heifers with similar comments, their trio of Angus steers (10m) made £780 a head also heifers of the same breed and age to £730. More terrific Angus cross cattle from the Cuming brothers of

Moreton fetched £805 a life for a striking pen of five steers (10m) with slightly earlier born pure sorts of that breed seeing £765 for Ray Tratt of Honiton. A further entry of very decent South Devon youngsters from Charles Chick of Stowford saw steers

(7m) rise to £730 a head for a pen of four whilst his bunch of older (11m) heifers with the same good breeding rose to £675. Well presented dairy bred heifers from Malcolm Harris of Slapton looked a good price at £770 for a Charolais (10m) also a group of three off the same farm and with the same comments to £745. Normal service resumed after last week’s near disaster with stronger lambs selling to £26 (x2) & £20 for the Morgan family of

Kingsbridge, £20 (x5) for Derek & Gill Harris of Dartmouth and £20 also for Brian Palfrey of Stoodleigh. Majority of others from £14 - £20 and nothing less than £8 to average £14.53 up just over a tenner on last week.

Numbers beginning to tighten in the store market causing trade to lift considerably. No best killing hoggs forward but framier

stores selling to £76 & £75 for Dorsets from NJ Williams of Ottery St Mary, £75.50 for three quarter Suffolks from Neil Hardy of Crediton, £74.50 for Texel x Border Leicester’s from Jonathan Lentern of Chagford and £74 for Lleyns from Chris & Alison

Crudge of Tiverton. Four vendors at £73, a total of nine pens at £72 and countless number of pens over £70. Several smaller and funnily bred sorts forward, all finding competitive bidding and selling well from a bottom book of £31.50 to stronger sorts in

the early £60’s. Overall average of £64.11 is up £3.61 on last week with similar quality on offer.

A short number sold to £79.50 for a Suffolk ram from John Ball of Stoke Gabriel whilst Dorset Ewes sold to £65 again for NJ Williams.

The special catalogued sale kicked off with 240 nicely bred and well grown Suffolk x NC Mule Ewe Hoggs from first time vendors

Lulworth Castle Farms of Wareham who saw great interest and experienced a solid trade from start to finish selling to £92 (x3), £90, £86 (x3), £84 (x6) & £83 (x6). Strong In-Lamb Suffolk Mule Shearlings from Mark & Henry Johnson of Bridport sold well

and to £138, £132 (x2), £131, £130 (x2) & £128 (x4) as In-Lamb Mule Ewe Hoggs from Ian Dennis of Totnes sold at £119 & £115 with his two pens of Suffolk crosses at £116. More Mule Ewe Hoggs at £102 & £90 (x2) for John Salmon of Newquay who also sold Mule Ewes at £100.

Numbers similar, quality was better and the trade was just about the same! Best doubles being 6T/FM Suffolk cross ewes with

Charollais lambs selling to £180 & £175 for the Snell family of Kentisbeare and £175 for sheep with the same comments from James Parish of Uffculme. Dorset Ewes with Christmas born Charollais sired lambs to £175 & £165 for Robert & Christine Steer

of Avonwick whilst others sold to £158 & £154 for GMA Chugg of Farway, £155 for Paul & Liz Harris of Kingswear and £154 also for WM Heard of Inwardleigh. Singles to £145 & £140 again for Robert & Christine Steer with their younger end Dorsets

with nice lambs, £144 again for James Parish with Suffolk cross ewes and £142 for Steve Caunter of Harbertonford with Dorset x Charollais Shearlings with Berrichon sired lambs. Other good singles being F/BM Mules with strong sappy lambs from Mike &

Steve Gilpin at £138 and a cracking Lleyn 6T with a young lamb sold well at £136 for Chris & Alison Crudge. Plenty of average doubles around the £145-£155 mark and singles of the same ilk from £110-£122. Some smaller or indifferent singles from £90 -

£108 looking chancy and £5-£8 cheaper than last week. That said, everything was keenly bid for and the couple trade looks set firm for the coming weeks, weather and grass growth dependant! Averages of £136.13 an outfit is worth talking about or £57.85

per life.

Rural Reflection March 2017

As we enter the month of March storm Doris seems to be causing mayhem throughout the country but

luckily here in the South West I think we have got away lightly with strong winds but no snow! The weather

throughout February has been mild which I am sure has been welcomed by the early lambers to ensure

the young lambs are given a good start. I am due to take a week out of the office in March to help my Dad

with the lambing at home so let’s hope the good weather continues.

I have recently joined the professional team here at Kivells and one thing I have learnt in my first few weeks

is that I will never have a dull day here! There is always something going on within the office and I am

looking forward to working with the whole team at Kivells to ensure all aspects of support for a farming

business are covered.

Throughout my first few weeks I continue to be kept busy speaking

to the RPA on behalf of clients that have not yet received their 2016

BPS payment or alternatively received a wrong payment. As agents,

we now have case workers with the RPA which is a one point of call

for any queries regarding unpaid claims which will hopefully progress

claims more quickly.

Whilst dealing with 2016 payments we are also getting closer to the 2017 BPS application window with the

online system due to open up in early March to allow applications to be submitted alongside land being

registered and land and entitlements being transferred. Besides submitting BPS applications on behalf of

a number of clients we also trade a lot of entitlements so if you have any entitlements to sell or you need

to purchase some please let us know.

I seem to speak to Natural England on a regular basis

regarding the countryside stewardship applications and I

am pleased to report that we have had our first confirmed

agreement through the post! Let’s hope this is a good sign

with many more agreements to come. Hedgerow grants are

also a hot topic with Natural England and the application

window is currently open for grants of up to £5,000 for

hedge laying, earth bank and stone wall restoration and the

planting of hedgerow trees. This grant is available for

anyone that is not currently in a countryside stewardship

agreement or HLS agreement. If your land is in an ELS

agreement you are eligible to apply providing the hedgerow

is not already subject to another obligation. If you are

interested in applying for this grant please get in touch and

we will be more than happy to help.

Page 6: EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT · 2017. 3. 7. · MARKET REPORT March 2017 Friday 3rd Store Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, ... throughout February

In the Kivells professional team we carry out a lot of planning applications and this is an area we feel

rewarding when a development changes a farm or business. A recent project that has been carried out

involved an application for an agricultural workers dwelling on a dairy farm where a planning appraisal was

required to show the need for an extra worker on the holding which in this case was the farmers son.

Within this planning appraisal the labour requirements were looked at to prove there was a need for an

additional worker to live within close proximity of the farm buildings, alongside the need for labour the

farm accounts are also looked at to prove it is a sustainable farm business going forward.

Class Q for the change of use from agricultural to residential has also been popular on farm buildings and

it is great to see existing farm assets adding value to the farmstead. I have recently had an application

approved for the change of use of two agricultural buildings on a farm under Class Q and these can be

developed into residential dwellings with no restriction on who lives in them. This gives flexibility for family

members or farm workers to live in them or alternatively they can be sold off to realise capital for the farm.

If you have any planning related queries please just give us a call.

We have been busy over the last couple of weeks carrying out market appraisals on land, farms and rural

property throughout all of the offices over the South West. The Spring is the perfect time to put your land

or property on the market when everything is looking at its best and at Kivells we have unrivalled contact

with the rural community via our network of offices and four livestock markets. We deal with the sale of

large estates through to pony paddocks and we advise on the method of sale, value and provide a

comprehensive marketing plan so if you are considering selling please do not hesitate to give us a call. We

have had a large number of successful sales throughout 2016 so the land and farms team within Kivells are

perfectly suited to sell at the optimum price.
