IN CELEBRATION OF DISABILITY RIGHTS MONTH AND 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM 19 November-10 December 2015 This exhibition was created by clients of two Afrika Tikkun programmes: The Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Programme and the Young Urban Women project (Afrika Tikkun GBV Programme). As women, we meet regularly in the inner-city of Johannesburg, and the outlying townships of Alexandra, Diepsloot and Orange Farm. In the communities where we live, our human rights, and the rights of our children, are often more theoretical than a lived reality. Despite what our Constitution says, many of us encounter violations of our rights to equality, dignity, safety and freedom, and the right to a basic education. Instead of accepting this situation we as women and caregivers are dedicated to changing the communities where we live, and South African society more broadly. We meet regularly, and undertake to advocate for our rights. This exhibition is a celebration of what we have been doing to support each other and promote our rights. The exhibition has 2 wings: The first wing showcases the creations of Young Urban Women from the Afrika Tikkun GBV Programme, in their fight for sexual, reproductive and health rights and decent work. These works were created during intensive group art counselling sessions. The second wing focuses on the situation facing children with disabilities and their families. The photographs, artworks and mini-documentaries were created by three self-help groups of caregivers of children with disabilities who participate in the Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Programme. IN CELEBRATION OF DISABILITY RIGHTS MONTH AND 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM 19 November-10 December 2015

This exhibition was created by clients of two Afrika Tikkun programmes: The Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Programme and the Young Urban Women project (Afrika Tikkun GBV Programme).
