NEW PORTS OF CALL FOR 2016 TO EXPLORE IN DEPTH

EXPERIENCE THE WORLD

Explore

KARLSKRONA, SWEDEN

Established in 1680 when Sweden was a great military power, Karlskrona was founded as a naval port, and the city’s rich maritime and architectural heritage have earned it the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many Baroque buildings remain intact, such as those on the grand main square, Stortorget. Having protected the harbour for more than three centuries, Kungsholm Fortress and Drottningskär Citadel reveal a remarkable history. In the fascinating Marine Museum, explore a Soviet submarine, inspect a World War II minesweeper, and observe an 18th century shipwreck through an underwater tunnel. Nautica | 4 Aug 2016 | Baltic Brilliance

ALCUDIA (MALLORCA), SPAIN

Poised on the bay where the Romans landed when they captured the island of Mallorca in 123 BC, Alcudia today is a resort town that invites recreation and relaxation. Discover the past by walking the sentry path along the medieval walls of the Old Town and visiting the excavations of the ancient Roman city of Pollentia. Then experience modern Alcudia by exploring the walking and cycling trails, the golf course and the long sandy beaches, perfect for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling. NEW PORTS OF CALL

GAETA, ITALY Perched on a promontory between Rome and Naples, gorgeous Gaeta has been a popular seaside resort for centuries and has also served as both an ancient and modern naval port. The skyline is dominated by a massive castle of uncertain origins, perhaps dating to the sixth century. A climb up Monte Orlando takes you to the mausoleum of Roman senator Lucius Munatius Plancus, which dates to the first century BC. Here you can gaze down upon Serapo Beach, where you might relax on the fine sands next to crystalline waters upon your descent. Sirena | 11 May 2016 Idyllic Ionian

CROTONE (CALABRIA), ITALY A city of soaring castles and scenic coastline, Crotone boasts an eventful history dating to 710 BC. Capo Colonna Archaeological Park holds the most ancient remains, while the town cathedral is noted for its 12th century baptismal font and the icon of the Black Madonna brought from the East when the church was first built. Traverse a narrow strip of land to visit Le Castella, an ancient citadel constructed on a small island, or explore the museum in the imposing 16th century Castle of Charles V. Sirena | 25 Jun 2016

Adriatic Awakening

MARTHA’S VINEYARD, MASSACHUSETTSKnown for its miles of beautiful beaches, Martha’s Vineyard invites relaxation. Lining the beaches of Aquinnah on the island’s western edge, colourful cliffs topped by a historic lighthouse offer extraordinary views. To the north, Oak Bluffs displays the island’s remarkable charm in its gingerbread cottages and the Flying Horses Carousel, a National Historic Landmark. On the eastern shores, explore the picturesque streets of colonial Edgartown, and then hop a ferry to Chappaquiddick Island to see the serene Japanese garden of Mytoi. Sirena | 18 Oct 2016 Coastal Harbours

GOZO, MALTA In the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Sicily lies Gozo, the second-largest island in the Maltese archipelago. Discover the mysterious temples, dedicated to the goddess of fertility, left from the golden Neolithic period. Explore some of the oldest religious structures in the world, like the fascinating Ggantija temples, which can be found on this small island with a population of only 31,000. Don’t leave this fascinating island without enjoying the intense orange-red sands and perfect snorkelling waters at Ramla Bay. Sirena | 7 Jul 2016 Mediterranean Collage

PIOMBINO (TUSCANY), ITALYOn the slopes of the promontory of Piombino overlooking the bay of Baratti, an archaeological park holds thousands of years of history in the remains of the ancient Etruscan town of Populonia. The historic centre of Piombino seems relatively modern by contrast. Pass through the 13th century gateway and stroll along the Piazza Bovio, which stands on a picturesque cliff overlooking the Tuscan Archipelago. Hop a ferry to the nearby island of Elba to relax on the splendid beaches or take in the views from the garden villa where Napoleon was exiled. Sirena | 8 Sep 2016Canals & Coastlines

SKAGEN, DENMARKA centuries-old fishing village, Skagen is perched along the windswept sand dunes at the northernmost point of Denmark, where the North Sea and the Baltic merge in a frenzy of crashing currents. The town has long been depicted by painters because of its spectacular scenery, charming communities and the remarkable quality of its light, inspiring a group of artists known as the Skagen Painters.Nautica | 4 Aug 2016Baltic Brilliance
