generations of experience

Scandinavians have been trading light to other countries for thousands of years. The Vikings set sail in their longboats to discover new land, and to sell oil to be used in primitive lamps. They challenged the seas and the unknown in their open boats.

Later on in history our seamen conquered the seven seas; expertise, innovation and hard work gave birth to new and exciting inventions.

The first crude oil was discovered in the North Sea in the late 1960s. Local companies have reached a world leading position with oil technology, drilling rigs and offshore vessels.

The same ambition to discover something new and to innovate was very much present in Birger Hatlebakk – the founder of Glamox. In the late 1940s, he started producing electrical material based on his own inventions in the city of Trondheim. A secret chemical formula allowed him to create high quality reflectors from standard aluminum. The company later moved to Molde. Today Glamox is a leading conglomerate within lighting, manufacturing innovative and recognised quality products for distribution world wide.

Glamox set sail like the Vikings a long time before them, trading light in foreign waters.

generations of experience

Glamox was founded in 1947. Through the years several subsidiaries has been established. We fulfill a wide range of requirements through our brands; aqua signal, Høvik Lys, Luxo and Norselight, all of them with longer experience than the mother company. In fact, two of the companies, Høvik and aqua signal, were founded late in the 19th century and started supplying marine lighting before Thomas Alva Edison invented the incandescent lamp.

All together we have combined experience of almost 500 years in the group and have several of the most recognized brands in our part of the worldwide marine and offshore industry.

As a manufacturer of marine lighting, Glamox gained experience through cooperation with Norwegian shipowners, rebuilding their fleet after World War II. Starting from the early 70’s the offshore adventure in the North Sea began and Glamox became the main contributor within our part of the electrical discipline.

Funny enough, relating to the oil and gas industry, in the copper lanterns or the brass wall lamps, they used kerosene, the first commercial applicable product from hydrocarbons. Today we use LEDs in the same products.

innovative technology

Our laboratories are the best equipped test centers for lighting solutions in Europe and has many years of experience with high demands for testing from the marine and offshore sector. Four climatic test chambers that can reach temperatures from -80 ºC up to +180 °C and allow relative humidities up to 98%, ensures product`s immunity from extreme cold or heat and from rapid changes in temperature or humidity.

With the electrodynamic vibration exciter we can expose lighting equipment to extreme vibrations with accelerations up to 15g. Our shock test equipment perform accelerations up to 300g. We are also able to check watertightness and subject the product to several electrical tests.

“With our testing we tend to gain flawless function and rough durability for our products – for the customers to rely on”

Hasso Schulz, Manager Environmental Test Centre in Bremen.

icebreaking innovationStena Drillmax / Goliat / Scarabeo 8

stena DrillMAx ice is the first ice-class ultra deepwater drillship for rough arctic conditions, allowing safe and efficient operations with temperatures down to -30º C. Stena DrillMAX ICE is an ice-class version of Stena DrillMAX. The DrillMAX fleet is built by Samsung Heavy Industries, a world leader on drillship constructions. DrillMAX ICE is the first drillship with DNV requirements winter Ice Cold -30º C (ice classification PC4) The Polar Class classification has a scale from PC1 to PC5, where ship at PC4 level must be able to break through ice up to 125 cm / 4,1 feet.

When engineering of Stena DrillMAX ICE started, the door was open for all suppliers to find the best lighting solution for arctic conditions (temperatures down to -30º C). Early in the process we found that LED technology was the better option for Stena Drilling and it was the most efficient solution for to meet the requirements. A LED luminary is not affected by the ambient temperature and gives equal light output at +30º C as well as at -30º C. In order to meet NORSOK standard when it comes to LUX level, a solution with fluorescent lighting fittings would require twice the quantity of fittings as with the LED technology.

The use of LED technology was the best solution for Stena Drilling and Samsung, both to reduce weight, maintenance cost, less power consumption and last but not least less installation hours for the yard.

the goliat fpso is build according to NORSOK standards with the hull classified to -20º C and equipment to -18º C. The FPSO is built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea for oil major ENI. The FPSO will produce oil in the GOLIAT field in the Barent Sea. Harsh environment demands luminaries that can work in low temperatures down to -18º C. LED technology is the perfect solution for the Goliat FPSO and both the Hyundai Heavy Industries and ENI were convinced that MAX ICE was the perfect luminary for the project. Glamox is a complete supplier of lighting for the Goliat project, including lightdesign and lightcalculation.

The semisubmersible drilling rig, scarabeo 8, owned by Italian oil major Saipem, will do development drilling at the Goliat field in the Barent Sea. The rig is equipped with Ex light fixtures for harsh arctic environments.

HSE Consultant Johan Kolstø for Statoil explains the problems they face with falling objects. He works with HSE for the group responsible for drilling and oil wells; StatoilHydro have around 40 operational offshore rigs.

“There is a lot of movement and vibration on the rigs, and suspended equipment can come loose and fall down if it has not been properly secured or produced according to our requirements,” he continues. Operators and suppliers in the North Sea area have a joint forum, DROPS, where they discuss and compile requirements and standards to be set for equipment onboard rigs. All potential suppliers of equipment to the operating companies are expected to comply with these requirements.

“We have worked together with Glamox for many years now, and they are one of those companies who have taken the problem of falling objects seriously, and developed light fittings in accordance with the requirements we expect.” The actual basis for creating a product which satisfies the safety requirements set by operating companies begins as early as the design stage.

“With a supplier such as Glamox, we are in dialogue from design to finished product. We secure the requirements for developing a light fitting which will not fall down. The light fittings are suspended high over the people working on offshore rigs. This is why we have to set strict requirements on suppliers and their products”, concludes Kolstø.

“Falling objects are one of the largest safety problems we have offshore. 60-70% of the most serious incidents offshore are related to falling objects, this is a

problem we take very seriously.”

“Our FPSOs often have to operate in extremely rough climates, such as the tropics where the air is hot, humid and salty. We therefore have to place strict requirements on the

quality of all equipment on board, both in terms of quality, functionality and maintenance-friendliness.”

Thore Stubberud, BW Offshore

Bw offshoreLongterm relationship

Thore Stubberud and BW Offshore place strict requirements on the equipment for their FPSOs.

Thore Stubberud is manager of the EI&T-department in the technical division of BW Offshore. BW Offshore is a leading global provider of floating production services to the oil and gas industry. With the acquisition of Prosafe Production in 2010 the company is the world’s second largest contractor with a fleet of 15 FPSOs and three FSOs. BW Offshore has an excellent track record on project execution and operations, with more than 25 years of experience.

“At what stage of such major projects do you contact suppliers, and what requirements do you expect of them?” “It all depends on the type of contract. A number of our suppliers are involved during the tender phase with the oil companies. However, when it comes to lighting, our suppliers are more involved in the detail engineering phase. For a supplier to sign an agreement with us, they must comply with absolute requirements regarding quality, delivery, service and availability of spare parts, and of course provide competitive prices.”

Glamox has supplied the lighting for all the FPSO projects executed by BW Offshore since the 80s, on both conversions from tankers or newbuildings. “What are the requirements for lighting onboard an FPSO, where oil is both produced and stored?” “The lighting onboard an FPSO has to be good, and must comply with the requirements in the class regulations and a number of Offshore standards. Risk of explosion, extreme environment and requirements for emergency and escape route lights are all areas which receive constant attention and focus. The right product in the right area is of the utmost importance.”

“We choose suppliers who cover a wide range of lighting equipment for maritime use. They focus on the challenges and requirements we make, and they are good at developing their own products. Glamox have been active on the market for a long time, have wide-ranging and lengthy experience, and know what we as customer want and need”, confirms Thore Stubberud from BW Offshore.

Senior Engineer Ragnar Aasrum from Grenland Group is clearly satisfied with Optiwin. He is part of a group involved in the design of electronics, instrumentation and telecommunications for large drillships. On all new major projects, Aasrum and his colleagues plan to make use of Optiwin 3D in order to plan the correct lighting for the entire ship.

Grenland Group works within the market for engineering, production and installation for the global oil and gas industry. The company has worked on numerous projects, including engineering services for drillships built at Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea. Grenland Group provided services for the ultra deep-sea drillship, constructed for Transocean at the world’s largest shipyard, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea (Ulsan). These types of offshore vessels are packed with equipment in every nook and cranny. Lighting is a real challenge.

“Pipes, machinery, steel beams and other equipment can easily cast shadows, resulting in poor lighting. Glamox’s 3D tool is fantastic. It helps us solve the problem of where to place light fittings and floodlights. We can do this on the computer screen during the design phase. In the past this was done at the yard during installation. This saves both us and the yard a lot of time and money”, confirms Ragnar Aasrum.

All work on the design of lighting on drillships and other offshore installations is based on the required specification, and years of experience. All areas on such ships have strict requirements related to equipment, safety and light. “We download the 3D model from the design programmes in Optiwin 3D, and place the correct light in the correct positions. This type of 3D calculation is a fantastic way to work. It allows us to design the very best and correct lighting for ships”, concludes Ragnar Aasrum.

“We have achieved great savings by using the light calculation program Optiwin from Glamox. We are now using Optiwin 3D, and expect to see even higher savings in time and costs. ”

“Customers using the new system indicate their savings to be up to 70% in electro-engineering. It is now possible to view the positioning of light fixtures in 3D at an early stage of a project. This also reduces the possibility of installation errors and the costs they incur. The fact that we have spent so much time and money on developing such an advanced calculation program is proof of our commitment to helping our customers do a good job”, explains Pascal.

He continues talking as he opens a model of a production vessel on his computer screen. “We import the vessel, place the lighting and are able to carry out all the necessary calculations swiftly and easily.” Christian Pascal studies the screen to make sure there is no shadowing or conflict with other equipment. “I can use the screen to take a walk around the vessel, moving in between pipelines, machines and other equipment to make sure the lighting is correct. It really is great fun to work with such an advanced and detailed system, almost more fun than playing a computer game”, he tells us with a smile.

“Optiwin 3D Pro is available for all our customers. Contact us to find out how this can work for you.”

“I have worked with lighting design for Glamox since 1994. Previously design projects could take up to a month with the tools we had available. Nowadays, with Optiwin

3D Pro, I can do the same work in half an hour.”

Project Manager Christian Pascal

optiwin 3D pro- Like working in the real world

Christian Pascal’s working day at Glamox, and that of customers working with light calculation, is much simpler with the calculation programme Optiwin 3D Pro.

When light calculations are required for an area on a production vessel, the customer submits 3D drawings which are imported into Optiwin 3D Pro. Once the necessary parameters have been specified, the system takes just seconds to calculate lighting and the positioning of light fixtures.
