PENR ITH PANTHERS VS NEWCASTLE KN IGHTS

KICKOFF: SATURDAY 5.30PM @ HUNTER STADIUM | REFEREES: GAVIN BADGER & HENRY PERENARA | VIDEO REFEREES: CHRIS WARD & LUKE PATTEN | TV: FOX 5.30PM | RADIO: 2GB 5.30PM

THEY WILL DENY IT, of course, but it only stands to reason that right now, there’d be a school of thought at the

Panthers to just give up on season 2013.The thought may only enter a player’s

head for a fl eeting moment, but that one moment matters. It could be the moment a promising play breaks down because of a wayward pass or a dropped ball.

The thought may only enter coach Ivan Cleary’s head for a second, too, but again, it matters. One wrong decision from high in

the grandstand or on the training park could be the diff erence between winning and losing the most critical of matches.

Ignoring those thoughts is one thing. Not having them at all is another.

I’ve used the “self-confi dence” buzz word in this preview a few times over past weeks but there is no better term to describe what Penrith lacks at the moment. They simply don’t believe in themselves, and they were well and truly beaten before a ball was even

kicked in Townsville last Saturday night.Losing is acceptable, sport is about that

a lot of that time, but not believing you can win should not be part of the plan.

Not one of the 17 players who took the fi eld against the Cowboys last Saturday night would have wanted to get on a fl ight the next day and return to Sydney without the two competition points. But that does not mean that they didn’t fully expect the outcome. You got the feeling, particularly in the early stages of the contest, that Penrith

simply hadn’t turned up to play. Mentally, the game was lost well before the boots were laced that day.

TURNING IT AROUNDOne thing Penrith has in their favour at

the moment is time. It’s only round six, and there’s plenty of time for a mid-season run of victories to complement wins in about 50 per cent of your matches. That’ll get you into the top eight, and anything can happen

from there. The problem is, does Penrith believe even for a second that they can beat Newcastle on Saturday?

Does Ivan Cleary believe he has what it takes to outsmart the master coach, Wayne Bennett? Do the players believe they can stop a Newcastle side that has been dangerous at home this season?

Does Penrith have what it takes out wide, given Newcastle’s strong backline that has plenty of points in it?

What Penrith need this weekend is for

some of their more experienced players to fi re up and have big matches.

One is Tim Grant, who has struggled this season to fi nd the form that earned him a sky blue jumper at Origin time last year. He’s been dominated by opposition packs, and is showing no sign of the grunt and fi repower up front he is known for.

Another is Dean Whare, who has struggled to fi nd his feet in the fullback jumper and needs to fi nd some form quick smart, or he’ll

fi nd himself on the end of an Ivan Cleary selection bombshell. Lazy is not the word, but Whare is struggling to impress anyone at the moment and simply doesn’t do the things that the quality number ones in our game do week in, week out.

THE KNIGHTSNewcastle went down 19-16 last weekend,

though they were never really in the game against St George-Illawarra. It was an entertaining game of footy, but one in which

Newcastle never quite clicked into gear. That said, they still played some dangerous football at times, and it’ll be tough for Penrith to contain their style of play.

THE FINAL WORDFinding the courage to tip Penrith this

weekend is almost as tough as fi nding a reason why you should. On paper and on recent form, Newcastle should be too good. Penrith need to prove us all wrong.

Knightmare looms out widePREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

The last time Penrith was beaten 30-0, they were smashed by the same scoreline the following week. Unfortunately, it happened just 12 months ago.

HE’S THE PANTHER THAT doesn’t often get much praise from fans, but the fact of the matter is that Cameron

Ciraldo is a “worker” and would prefer to be part of a team than the star of the show.

The 28-year-old former Knight may not be the fl ashiest player on the park, but it’s the little things, the “one per centers”, that often go unnoticed and is what keeps this gentle giant selected each week.

In round four Ciraldo returned to the Panthers after an off -season recovering from a serious knee operation.

During his time in recovery he wondered if he’d ever play football again, let alone be selected in a fi rst grade line-up that boasted plenty of new talent.

“To be honest I didn’t really think about it, getting back into fi rst grade wasn’t something that was on my mind,” he said.

“I was more concerned about getting myself back to full fi tness. For a time there my knee wasn’t feeling so great, and I wasn’t really worried about team selections or anything like that.”

But after one game playing for feeder club, Windsor Wolves, Ciraldo was chosen to return to the NRL by the man that’s shown the most faith in him over the past 12 months, Ivan Cleary.

“I didn’t think I would make it back to fi rst grade so soon because I missed a lot of training during the pre-season due the operation at Christmas,” he said.

“I got a lot of confi dence out of Ivan when

he picked me two weeks ago. I was very nervous for that game but the confi dence he showed in me gave me confi dence to do the job he asked.”

The second-rower turned lock may also be on the way out of Penrith, if he can’t win himself a new deal for next year. Ciraldo was hesitant when asked what the future may hold for him and the club.

“I’m not really focused on that to be honest,” he said.

“I’ve put a lot of eff ort getting my knee back 100 per cent and I just want to play footy and enjoy myself. If a contract comes up then I’ll think about it then.”

CAMERON CIRALDO IS FIGHTING TO EARN A NEW CONTRACT AT PENRITH, BUT THERE WAS A TIME HE DOUBTED HE’D EVER SEE THE FOOTBALL FIELD AGAIN, AS REPORTER NATHAN TAYLOR DISCOVERED...

PR IDDO ’S PO INT W ITH LUKE PR IDD IS

TWO MASSIVE MATCHES THIS week. Firstly, the game all league fans have been waiting for since SBW

announced that he was returning to league, especially the Bulldogs fans that he let down fi ve years ago, with the Roosters playing the Bulldogs. Even the disappointing early form of the Bulldogs does little to diminish the hype surrounding the game as the inconsistency the Roosters have shown I believe leaves this game wide open and there’s no doubt there will be an electric atmosphere. Will the prospect of facing SBW in such a big game plus the fact NSW coach Daley has stated he will not be in the NSW squad on his current form fi nally bring big T-Rex out to play?

There will only be one team remaining unbeaten after the clash between the Storm and the Rabbits. Slater, Smith, Cronk, Hoff man, Inglis, Luke, Reynolds, Burgess... watching these guys on the fi eld all at once going up against each other is mouth-watering to say the least. Let’s not forget also the tactical battle between Bellamy and Maguire, two great football minds will deploy against each other. I know it’s early but this could be a preview of the season’s end and a real test to see where the Bunnies are at.

I was interested to hear Shane Flanagan throw up excuses for the Sharks’ diminishing form of late but more interesting was him saying it was hard to prepare with one training session per week.

I think I would still be playing if I only had to do one session per week, so what is going on? Regardless, one thing I know is that as a player your number one priority each week is making sure no matter what is happening off the fi eld, the only focus once you leave that shed and cross that white line is doing your job with each week basically coming down to one 80 minute eff ort. This will be a test of Flanagan’s man management skills, as each one of those players has distinct individual needs that need to be met in order to get them up to perform.

The Panthers’ experiment with the halves failed to deliver results but let’s give them a few weeks to combine before passing full judgement.

FEATURE STORY

WHILE THE PENRITH PANTHERS have been very active in the player signing market for 2014 already,

there’s quite a number of current stars without a deal for next season.

Extra Time takes a look at whose deal expires at season’s end and just who club bosses may want to keep around.

CAMERON CIRALDO28-year-old Ciraldo joined the Panthers

in 2012 and played all but two games that year. He’s long been a favourite of coach Ivan Clearly, getting chosen week in, week out, despite not being one of the side’s top performers. We predict Ciraldo will need to fi nd another club in 2013, possibly in the Super League.

GEOFF DANIELA26-year-old Daniela is currently in his

second stint with the Panthers since re-joining the club from the Wests Tigers last year. He fi lled in for Brad Tighe earlier this year but didn’t set the stage alight in his two performances. Panthers may off er him a very cheap deal to remain a handy back-up but don’t be surprised if fans see Geoff on the way out again.

TOM EISENHUTH20-year-old Eisenhuth got a sample of

fi rst grade late in 2012. He’s yet to be used in 2013 but don’t be surprised after a few more games in Windsor that he’ll be elevated again. This kid has a big future in the centres and will no doubt earn himself another deal at the Panthers. He just needs an opportunity to impress those in power.

DANNY GALEAIt’s not hard to argue with this one but

Galea won’t be getting a new deal with the club. He spends these days playing park football and the Panthers won’t want the 29-year-old chewing up any of their cap space.

KEVIN KINGSTONNo doubt the toughest decision the

Panthers will have to make in 2013. Kevvy has been a champion for the club over the past four years but with James Segeyaro chasing more game time, Kevvy may not be needed. However, the club will probably re-sign the 29-year-old for another year to help groom Tim Grant as the club’s next captain.

CLINT NEWTONIt will be hard to say goodbye to the

people’s champion in 2013 but we can’t see him continuing on. Newto’s had a long and successful career in both the NRL and Super League but with his 32nd birthday approaching, the club and Clint may come to a mutual decision to hang up the boots.

NIGEL PLUM‘Plummy’ has been one of Penrith’s top

performers this year, even starting for the Panthers on occasion. If the club can strike an aff ordable deal with the big prop, expect him to continue on with Penrith for at least two more seasons.

TRAVIS ROBINSONRe-signing Travis could very well be a

toss of the coin job. He has the genes to be brilliant, as his twin brother is in-form

Raiders fullback, Reece, but is fi nding it diffi cult to push his way into fi rst grade. We predict Travis will get another deal as Penrith remain thin in the backs.

DAVID SIMMONSGood old ‘Simmo’ has been a Penrith

stalwart since 2010 and has always been regarded as Mr Reliable. There’s no doubt he’ll be gunning for a contract extension but with plenty of red hot under 20’s kids eager for his spot, Simmons will most likely have to pack his bags.

RYAN SIMPKINSFans saw glimpses of what he could do

last year and many weren’t too impressed. There’s a good chance he may get a second-tier deal as a back-up but it all depends on how things play out with fellow hooker, Kevin Kingston.

NATHAN SMITHSmith’s been with the club since 2007 but

could very well be enjoying his fi nal year. It seems Smith has fallen out of favour due to poor recent form, and could well be in the sights of English clubs as well. I don’t think Penrith will be too upset to see his large contract disappear.

DAYNE WESTONThe 2013 Dayne Weston is very diff erent to

the 2012 Dayne Weston, who was Penrith’s number two prop last year. It seems the 26-year-old has lost pride in the jumper and will probably look to leave the club on his terms. Don’t be surprised if he becomes a mid-season release.

PENRITH PANTHERS HOOKER RYAN Simpkins joined hundreds of local kids at Cranebrook Skate Park on Tuesday to

celebrate the Youth Week Festival. With the help of Barnardos Cranebrook,

the Youth Week Festival is a national celebration of young people that encourages them to simply “dream big” and give back to their communities.

Simpkins, who’s currently recovering from a broken hand, said he was thrilled to be able to empower and inspire the disadvantaged youths in the local area.

“I think this is a very good thing for the community,” he said.

“It might not seem like much but some of these kids come from tough backgrounds and don’t have much, so anything that can lift these kids’ spirits is a good thing. An event like this might encourage them to do better in school or maybe try a bit harder and not go down the wrong path.”

The 24-year-old said he was fortunate

enough to grow up on the Gold Coast surrounded by good, loving people.

“I was pretty lucky I grew up in a good area, and have good family and friends around me, which defi nitely helps,” he said.

“A lot of kids don’t have that opportunity, so it’s good when you can get them together in a group like this and try to encourage them to do the right thing.”

Tommy Schroeter, Youth Worker at Barnardos, said it was important for disadvantaged kids to meet people like Simpkins so they can gain inspiration.

“I think having someone like Ryan here shows the kids that people like him care for the community and that they’re seen in value,” he said.

Simpkins added he hoped to get back on the paddock as soon as possible to fi ght his way back into the fi rst grade line-up.

“There’s a lot of competition for spots this year, so it’s not easy to get in that fi rst grade side,” he said.

FOR KIDS WHO DON’T HAVE MUCH IN LIFE, MEETING A PANTHERS PLAYER CAN MEAN THE WORLD. RYAN SIMPKINS THIS WEEK VISITED CRANEBROOK’S YOUTH WEEK FESTIVAL TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE LOCALS...

They don’t come much tougher in rugby league than Penrith Panthers and New South Wales Origin forward, Tim Grant.

Almost certainly a future captain of the club, Grant has had a slow start to the year but there is very little doubt that he will re-capture the form that saw him make his Origin debut in 2012.

25-year-old Grant debuted for the Panthers in 2007, against St George-Illawarra at Penrith Stadium.

Not much was said about it on the night, but it would be the fi rst steps towards a dynamite career that incredibly has a decade still to run. When it ends, there’s every chance Tim Grant will go down in Panthers history as one of the toughest forwards

to play for the club, and one of the most inspiring and well-spoken players off the fi eld, too.

Grant really rose to prominence in 2010 when alongside Sam McKendry he laid the platform for a strong year, which saw the Panthers qualify for the fi nals.

In 2011, representative honours began fl owing in, with Grant making the PM’s XIII and the City Origin side.

In 2012, the rare honour of being handed a New South Wales jumper helped push Grant into the lounge rooms of every league follower in the country.

Grant is looking to cement his position as a top prop in 2013, and is ready for some big hits this weekend.

As tough as they come

LOWER GRADES FEATURE STORY

THE WINDSOR WOLVES BOUNCED back into the winner’s circle last weekend with a comprehensive

victory over the Illawarra Cutters 40-16.After drawing their game against

the Auckland Vulcans in controversial circumstances the week before, the Wolves were out to infl ict some revenge but had to do it the hard way for most of the game.

With Panthers halfback Luke Walsh steering the side around for the fi rst time in his career, the Wolves battled it out with the Cutters for the fi rst hour before four late tries in the fi nal 15 minutes blew out the score.

Standouts for the Wolves included Travis Robinson, who scored a hat-trick of tries; fullback Matt Moylan, who was involved in almost everything; and second-rower Anthony Cherrington, who’s continuing to be strong in both attack and defence.

Windsor Wolves Team Manager, Charlie Vella, said fi ll-in half Walsh and regular fi rst-grader Nathan Smith both had strong games.

“Walshy’s attitude was great and so was Nathan Smith,” he said.

“They both played very well. There was also some outstanding eff orts from Travis Robinson who scored a scintillating try, and Anthony Cherrington is getting closer and closer to fi rst grade.

“The team hasn’t really hit their straps yet, there’s a lot of improvement still but we’ve got a lot of talent here.”

This week an unchanged Wolves side hit the F3 to take on Newcastle in what’s sure to be another tight contest.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s Holden Cup Under 20’s side remain undefeated and on top of the NYC ladder after fi ve rounds.

While their fi rst grade counterparts can’t buy a win of late, the young cubs appear to be getting better as the weeks progress.

Last Saturday night their same-day trip to Townsville to take on the North Queensland Cowboys didn’t seem to trouble them at all, winning the contest 32-20.

FORMER PANTHER ARANA TAUMATA clearly has wraps on himself, though most would agree they’re unfounded.

During Penrith’s 30-0 hammering at the hands of North Queensland last weekend, Taumata had a dig at his former club, and in particular Wes Naiqama and Tom Humble. He also said: “Bit tough when ya not looked at and you have so much to give and you see how the boys are going”. Of course, it was Taumata who walked out on the Panthers this year despite having a contract. Perhaps it would have been him out there on Saturday night, with the opportunity, if he’d been patient enough to wait his turn. But why would we expect anything more? This is the same guy dumped by numerous clubs for his off -fi eld behaviour, the same guy who was involved in a police investigation in regards to alleged prescription fraud, and the same guy Penrith bent over backwards to give an opportunity. Hopefully Taumata one day realises the opportunities he threw away – including the one to be part of a dynasty at Melbourne. The world is not against you Arana, you’ve created most of the missed opportunities and chances yourself, without help from anyone else. Grow up.

My colleagues here at Extra Time are obviously pretty dedicated to getting the best possible stories on the Panthers out there for you. It’s interesting to note that the

other local newspapers, including the one that holds the contract for the offi cial match day publication handed out at home games, rarely attend weekly media events planned by the club. The Panthers make players and coaching staff available at least once a week, but apart from Extra Time and members of the wider Sydney media, it’s almost always a no-show from the other papers in town.

Back to Twitter (I’m having a very #social week), and Panthers boss Phil Gould has vented his frustration at the NRL’s new app, in which you are supposed to be able to watch live matches for a fee. “Why can’t I get this live NRL vision on my phone as promised?,” Gus tweeted. “I get the app. It says press to purchase. Then says can’t purchase. WHAT??”

Talk about bad timing. Panthers halfback Luke Walsh was due to be a special guest on the ‘Panthers Weekly’ podcast last Wednesday. He was dumped from fi rst grade on Tuesday, and hence pulled out of the planned grilling by the feared Strawbs and Teach – who I’m told had the tough questions planned and ready to go.

To fi nish up, how good is this half time entertainment? Get some locals together, and make them run at a big infl atable ball. Marketing genius.

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER

AND THE LOGIE GOES to…

On TV’s night of nights our boys were dazzling, taking home

Most Popular Sports Program. In the wake of our award night success, The Insider caught up with Senior Executive Producer of ‘The Footy Show’ Glenn Pallister, to share his insights from television’s most talked about evening.

Pallister spoke about the moment ‘The Footy Show’ learned of our nomination:“We were thrilled to be nominated for the award, but to win it was sensational. The reason we have enjoyed making this show for 20 years, is that so many people get a kick out of what we do every Thursday night. To be acknowledged by those people who took the time to vote for the show means an enormous amount to all of us here”.

Fronting the panel in its 20th season,

Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin proudly accepted the award.

“Fatty’s speech was incredibly heartfelt; it meant a lot to him to be winning in our 20th year. We all paid him to say some nice things about us on the night too,” Pallister said.

After the win however, is when the excitement ensues.

“It’s an interesting journey after you walk off the stage. The boys and I were met by about 40 journalists and photographers… I’ve never seen Beau Ryan more excited, it was like he had just won a Grand Final. That shows the passion he has for this show.”

A feverish Beau Ryan was sure to capitalise on his fi rst Logies experience with Pallister citing, “Beau and Joel Madden from ‘The Voice’ will be planning a TV show together, well at least Beau thinks so.”

Michael Slater took a more mature approach at the infamous Logies after-party.

“Slats very graciously allowed James Brayshaw and Garry Lyon from the AFL Footy Show to have a photo with our Logie,” Pallister said.

Pallister admits the show’s fearless leader may have had other things on his agenda throughout the night. Fatty was last seen deep in conversation with ‘A Current Aff air’ host Tracy Grimshaw.

”Perhaps he has a neighbourhood dispute he needs resolved,” Pallister quipped.

As the dust settled on the monumental night an effi cacious Glenn Pallister grinned: “All in all it is a crazy night but great fun. And we reckon the right ‘Footy Show’ got the nod on the night”.

See you at 8.30pm Thursday!
