I f any further proof was needed that the 2014 Penrith Panthers are a very different outfit to the teams of the previous few years, you only needed

to watch the nail-biting one-point loss to the Melbourne Storm last weekend.

After comfortably beating Newcastle in the opening round, the Panthers produced a stunning performance against the Storm, with just a little bit of luck going against them in the end. Again it was Peter Wallace who provided the calm, steady head for the Panthers.

PREVIEW

It’s time for Idris to shineJamal Idris makes his first NRL appearance at Penrith Stadium this weekend. Photo: Melinda Jane

The Panthers return home this weekend to take on a Canterbury side that is very much an unknown quantity.

They were awful in round one against Brisbane and the scoreline flattered them – they simply didn’t have any spark in attack and clearly missed the enthusiasm of Ben Barba at fullback.

Last weekend they easily demolished an injury-ravaged Cronulla, but the Sharks are facing a range of issues and don’t necessarily offer the best form line.

Saturday afternoon’s game at Sporting-bet Stadium will be telling for both sides.

For the Panthers, their mental toughness will be tested after the heartbreak of the 18-17 loss to the Storm.

For the Bulldogs, they need to prove that last weekend’s win over Cronulla wasn’t just taking advantage of a side decimated by injuries to key players like Todd Carney and Luke Lewis.

Bulldogs coach Des Hasler knows Penrith will be a real test for his team. At his post-match press conference following the win over Cronulla on Monday night, Hasler labelled the Panthers “the form team of the competition” after the open-ing rounds.

“We’re going to have to play very well against them,” he said.

The key for the Bulldogs lies with halfback Trent Hodkinson, who had a standout game against the Sharks with a personal tally of 18 points.

He was heavily involved in the contest and really ensured Cronulla never found their way into the game.

The challenge for Hodkinson and his opposite number this weekend, Peter Wallace, is to win the battle early.

Neither halfback stands tall on the NRL mountain and both have plenty to prove this season, but the player who best controls this game in the opening 20 minutes may well lay the platform for what the following hour provides.

The Dogs are a confidence team – when their heads are down, they struggle to get back into matches. The Panthers on the other hand simply don’t give up and just kept coming at the Storm even when it appeared everything was against them.

The battle of the two forward packs looks enticing, too – in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a fair few bruises in the sheds afterwards given the grunt up front for both sides.

Expect the ‘bash brothers’ in Nigel Plum and Adam Docker to relish the opportu-nity against players like Frank Pritchard, James Graham and Tony Williams. The return of Tim Grant – who has plenty to prove with rumours about his future refusing to go away – will be a big boost for Penrith.

Whilst the battle up front and the mental contest between the halves will be crucial in this game, I really think this is the match that we could see Jamal Idris spring to life in Panthers colours.

Against one of his former clubs, Idris looks to have the measure of his opposite number in Josh Morris when it comes to sheer strength. Idris showed great skill in his partnership with Kevin Naiqama last weekend and no matter who he has alongside him this week, don’t be surprised to see them cross for a couple of four-pointers.

Whilst the Bulldogs’ performance on Monday night is a bit of a worry given the confidence they would have taken from it, the short turnaround time and their lack of spark in key positions points to the Panthers overpowering them in the end.

They’re some of the toughest men in the NRL, but Panthers players looked very nervous when raising money for the World’s Greatest Shave at Panthers Leagues Club last week

FEATURE STORY

Panthers’ hair raising effortP icture this: Nigel Plum, one of the

most feared players in the NRL, strolling into Blooms Chemist to buy a packet of hair dye, blue hair

dye to be exact.Well, it happened last week… for a good

cause of course.Plum, along with fellow teammates

Brent Kite, Kevin Kingston, Shaun Spence and Panthers General Manager Phil Moss, came together to help raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation through the World’s Greatest Shave.

Kite, Kingston and Spence along with Moss went for the skinhead look while Plum, who took part in the World’s Great-est Shave last year, opted to dye his hair blue on the advice of teammate Jamie Soward.

“I was going to shave it again this year but I was talking to Jamie Soward this morning and he said that I should dye it instead, do something different,” Plum told Extra Time.

Plum admitted to visiting Blooms Chem-ist in Westfield Penrith on his way to the event, set up at Panthers Leagues Club, to make sure he was fully prepared.

“I told the sales assistant it was for the World’s Greatest Shave cause, so she helped me out,” he said.

“I thought about colouring it black but was told with my blonde hair it would probably turn green so I thought I’d colour it blue. The dye is meant to stay in for at least eight washes.”

The players weren’t the only ones under-going makeovers with two high school students taking part too. Kite, who joined the Panthers this year, was in charge of

the hair shaver for most of the afternoon. Although Plum was adamant that prob-ably wasn’t the best idea.

“I don’t think Brent Kite has a future in hairdressing,” he said.

The Panthers raised plenty of much-needed funds on the day with major sponsor OAK contributing $3000 to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Last weekend’s loss to the Storm was heartbreaking, but prop Jeremy Latimore says the Panthers will learn from the experience

FEATURE STORY

Tough lesson to learnP anthers interchange prop Jeremy

Latimore believes his side played so well last Saturday night that they deserved at least one point

out of the bruising encounter.Speaking with Extra Time, the 27-year-

old said it was a hard loss to cop consider-ing the Panthers were the better side for the duration of the game.

“It was hard… we competed so well for 80 minutes and I think the way we played we deserved at least one point,” Latimore admitted.

“It was a deflating feeling after the game. Those three big Melbourne Storm players (Smith, Cronk and Slater) just know how to pull the big plays off.”

One of those big plays was a miracle kick-off by Storm captain Cameron Smith that went into touch. The low and angled grubber caught the Panthers by surprise and earned the Storm a valuable scrum feed which ultimately resulted in a game-winning Cooper Cronk field goal.

“It was a risky play because we were even at that stage too,” Latimore said.

“[Had it not worked] we may have had the ball in good field position. That’s why they get paid the big bucks, them fellas.”

However, the Panthers had their own chance to seal the game with a big play

right on full-time after they were awarded a penalty 40 metres out. The Panthers via co-captain Peter Wallace opted to go for a long range penalty goal for the miracle win, however it just wasn’t Penrith’s night.

“It was a hard kick, the conditions were tough for goal kickers and he did the best he could. I’m just glad it wasn’t me taking the kick,” Latimore said.

Latimore said the Panthers will go into this weekend’s clash smarter and with a lot of confidence, having learned plenty of lessons from last weekend.

“We have to make sure we stay on track. I think we can take a lot out of that loss and take it into this week. We just need to keep focusing on the things we do well,” he said.

MOMENT WITH MOLAN

T hank you to all the Extra Time readers for watching ‘The Footy Show’ last week. I hope everyone’s been enjoying my

quirky segment The Molan Files, and I want to encourage all Penrith fans to get involved in the future by sending me your best Look-a-Likes of your players. I truly believe Penrith fans have the best sense of humour in the NRL, so make sure you get in touch with us.

Speaking of fans, this brings me to this week’s topic… you!

I want NRL fans to stick by their team no matter what happens this season.

If you look at a team like the Dragons, many tipped them as wooden spooners after their pre-season trial form, but after their last two winning performances it’s reinvigorated their fans.

Things can change in an instant in rugby league. One week your team is flying high, the next they look like they couldn’t beat an egg.

But despite all of this, fans need to stay on the bandwagon and support their club.

When it comes to Penrith fans, there’s so many good signs with your team so far but as is the nature of rugby league it probably won’t be this good all year round (although I hope for your sake it is).

Penrith fans have had every right to be disappointed the last couple of years but there’s a process that needs to happen, and the roster they have now is courtesy of those two to three years of pain.

Fans need to remain patient and loyal with teams, it will always be rewarded.

If we can learn one thing from the Drag-ons recently, that’s things can turn around if you are patient and supportive.

For me, I follow the Canberra Raiders and I get as frustrated as any fan.

When Canberra were up in round one 20-0 to the Cowboys I thought we were home and hosed.

Turns out we weren’t. When push comes to shove I always look

for positives and I think as long as you see effort from your team then your team deserves you to support them regardless of the result.

I hope all of you get out to a game this weekend and give your team a big cheer for me, they’ll appreciate it.

Lastly, some good news for you Panthers fans.

Next Thursday on ‘The Footy Show’ we have a very special story on Jamal Idris which I hope you all stay up and watch. It’s not to be missed and will certainly bring a smile. 8.40pm Thursdays on Nine!

Stick by your team no matter what

Show your support this weekend

PRIDDO'S POINT

The first two rounds have thrown up results that I am sure have tipsters all scratching their heads as to what teams are going to throw up this week.

We have two teams whose coaches were both tipped to be amongst the first to be facing the axe within the opening rounds, Brisbane and St George, both leading the competi-tion. This shows why little attention should be placed on trial form these days.

South Sydney, whose opening demolition of last year’s premiers saw them move into premiership favouritism, then failed to live up to the expectations again a week after while Parramatta, well what can we say apart from ‘rocks and diamonds’.

The early form of the Panthers is very encouraging for fans and I firmly believe they were robbed of the opportunity to be well placed to secure their first win in Melbourne after a disallowed try from a pass that was not forward in any way, shape or form.

I still do not understand why if we are using the video referee for everything else that they cannot tip off the ref that the call was incorrect and rule a fair try.

While awarding the try completely changes the course of the game the Storm’s form meant it would have been an effort for them to gain control of the game from there.

While the side played great in difficult conditions, I was impressed again with Peter Wallace who has taken the reigns of this side and did not deserve to miss that last goal. Elijah Taylor was also great and has the ability to develop into a leader in the forwards.

Speaking of leaders, while injury has ruled Tim Grant out thus far there are murmurs doing the rounds constantly linking him to other clubs next year despite still having several years remaining on his current contract. Tim, despite his young years is a real leader of men and I find it hard believe he is unwanted by the Panthers. TG is Penrith through and through and could become one of the greats.

PANTHERRUMBLINGS

The Penrith Panthers will need to step up their games in the lower grades quick smart or risk losing touch with the rest of the pack.

After ending the 2013 season on a high, the Panthers are still winless in both the NSW Cup and Holden Cup after the open-ing two rounds.

Last Saturday evening in the NSW Cup, the Panthers travelled to the Central Coast to take on non-NRL affiliated club, Wyong, who unleashed former Australian prop Mark O’Meley for the second time this season.

In wet conditions, the game was ‘you score, I score’ in the early stages before Wyong broke out to a huge 30-12 lead in the second half. The Panthers did well to come back through Sam Anderson, who scored a hat trick in the match, but fell short 30-26.

The only major injury to come out of the game was that of rookie centre Robert Jennings who came off with an arm issue.

Meanwhile, the Holden Cup Panthers got off to a positive start against the Melbourne Storm after scoring the first try of the match, but things went downhill fast not long after.

With the return of 2013 NYC Player of the Year Bryce Cartwright as well as Grand Final hero Waqa Blake, many gave the Panthers a good chance of beating the Storm, but that wasn’t to be after Melbourne got into their groove early and demolished Penrith 42-24.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak

It could have been one of the great rugby league redemption stories but instead, James Roberts’ life is again in tatters. The troubled speedster was dumped by the Panthers last Friday after yet another off-field incident. Exact details haven’t been confirmed by the club, but it’s understood that two incidents in the space of a couple of months have resulted in the termina-tion. The Masked Panther can also reveal that Roberts faced Penrith Local Court last year on another matter, that wasn’t made public. The Panthers say they’re happy enough for Roberts to sign with another club following his immediate release, but the NRL may have other ideas – they’re unlikely to look at the situ-ation favourably given Roberts’ previous record.

I wish I could give Panthers fans some good news in relation to the rumours about Tim Grant and Sam McKendry being shopped around to other clubs, but I can’t. From what I understand, the

stories are true – Grant and McKendry are on the outer at the club and there’s a big chance one of them won’t see out the season with Penrith. My tip? Don’t be surprised if you see Grant in a Gold Coast Titans jumper by the middle of the year. The rumours and innuendo gained more strength over the weekend with reports that Grant was fully fit and could have

been selected for Saturday’s clash with Melbourne, but was left out of the team by coach Ivan Cleary.

Still on Grant and as I understand it, the former NSW prop and coach Ivan Cleary don’t really see eye to eye, which could be fuelling the current rumours. It was hoped that the pair would form a stronger bond after doing Kokoda together in the off-season, but the breakthrough moment apparently didn’t occur.

There was a post-match debacle last weekend following Penrith’s narrow loss to the Storm. As per the NRL’s require-ments, coach Ivan Cleary and captain Kevin Kingston made themselves avail-able to the media in the conference room within 15 minutes of full time. As there were no journalists present to ask ques-tions, the conference did not go ahead. Sometime after the NRL’s 15 minute window and once Ivan and Kevin had walked back into the change room to finish post-match recovery, several journalists approached club staff outside asking if the coach would be doing his post-match press conference, to which the Panthers advised he had already attended the media room, but as no one was there it did not take place. The media were not happy, but the Panthers were well within their rights.

The Panthers have announced a new partnership with the Literacy for Life Foundation. The logo of the Foundation features on the back of the jersey for the 2014 season. Panthers head honcho Phil Gould visited Bourke last Friday to celebrate the graduation of 41 students from the 2013/14 campaign.

You would have to think that former Panthers coach Matt Elliott’s tenure at the Warriors is in serious doubt. We all know that Elliott is the man you’d want next to you if you were in a bank that was getting robbed – he can talk his way out of anything – but he is surely running out of excuses. With such a talented squad, two losses to start the season is unac-ceptable. If they lose to the Cowboys this weekend, it could be goodnight.

T here’s been some rough moments in Penrith’s near half century history in top flight rugby league. But no matter what has happened in the past, and no matter what

happens in the next 50 years, it’ll be hard to find a tougher, more sadder day than May 28, 1978.

The Panthers were facing Newtown at Henson Park and young prop John Farragher was making his seventh appearance in the top grade. Farragher had come down from country NSW to trial with Penrith in 1977 but decided to go back home to Gilgandra, before eventually winning his contract in 1978.

Club officials believed he had plenty of talent and he certainly showed what he was made of in his first six games in Panthers colours.

But Farragher’s career would be tragically cut short on that May day, and his name would enter rugby league folklore for all the wrong reasons.

May 28, 1978 would not only be the last day Farragher would play rugby league, but the last day he would walk.

A scrum collapsed during the first half and after everyone else regained their feet, it was quickly noticed that one player remained on the ground.

Farragher was motionless. He told medics that he couldn’t feel anything –

prompting a major emergency reaction on the field. The game was held up for more than half an hour before Farragher was transported from the field.

Tests would later confirm that Farragher had broken his spinal cord and would become a quadri-plegic.

The incident happened in the first half and even in those days, news travelled quickly. By half-time, the Penrith squad was aware that it didn’t look good for Farragher – and some reports suggested they even wanted to call the game off. In those days, with rugby league far from a fully fledged professional sport, the option was most definitely considered.

However, the Panthers played on and “did it for John”, and beat the Jets comfortably.

Farragher recalls the incident in the Panthers: Men In Black book.

“I wasn’t in any agony, there was no pain or anything,” he said.

“It was a strange feeling, like a battery quickly

wearing down to nothing. They put a brace around my neck and got me into the ambulance. I knew then I wouldn’t walk again and I said that to Ian Maurice in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.”

These days, Farragher – with his welcoming smile – is a mainstay at the Panthers Leagues Club, where he’s been employed for decades.

“John Farragher is an outstanding human being who has high level respect and esteem from all who know and meet him,” Panthers Chairman Don Feltis told Extra Time this week.

“Panthers will always be there for John... we all have significant admiration for him.”
