MATCH PREVIEW

Phil Gould, usually reserved about Penrith’s on-field performances, stood up at the club’s 50th anniversary gala dinner last Saturday night and acknowledged that so many rugby league experts were anticipating the Panthers to be

a force to be reckoned with in the next few years.

He then declared: “But in two or three years, they might see us coming”.

Gould’s obvious but bold statement that there is “no time like the present” was either designed to offer supporters and sponsors hope, or inspire the players in attendance.

Whatever the reason, he couldn’t be more right.

It’s true that Penrith’s current squad will

be more experienced, more ready for an attack on the premiership in 2017 or 2018.

But those players who many predict will be part of Grand Final week celebrations in the coming years are the same players who are here today. The squad that will bring success back to the foot of the Moun-tains is all but established; it will be built on the back of class forwards like Trent Merrin, the growing experience of talent like Matt Moylan and Josh Mansour and the excitement of young guns like Nathan Cleary and Bryce Cartwright.

If experience is all of a sudden needed to even out the enthusiasm, Jamie Soward waits in the wings. He’s won a Grand Final and played Origin football – he is a big game player.

Penrith may sit just inside the top eight but a lot can happen in 10 weeks. And that is what sits between Penrith and a realistic tilt at the premiership – 10 games.

10 games in which boys can decide if they’re going to be men.

10 games in which the playing group

can decide if they’d rather wait for 2017 or 2018, or just do it now.

10 games in which to stand up and be counted.

What can happen in 10 weeks? In 2005, the Wests Tigers finished round

16 on just 16 competition points (two less than Penrith this season). By the end of the regular season, they finished fourth on 32 points and went on to win the most unlikely of premierships. Nobody thought 21-year-old Benji Marshall was too young that day.

In 2009, Parramatta finished round 16 on even less competition points (15), before going on a remarkable winning run that saw them make the season deciding Grand Final, only falling at the final hurdle.

In 10 weeks, your entire fortunes can change. Premiership culture can be built.

This Saturday night against the Tigers the Panthers have the opportunity to kick off a period of time that could go down in the club’s folklore. In front of 65,000 empty seats at ANZ Stadium, with the

nation’s eyes focused on the start of elec-tion counting, they have the opportunity to quietly go about their business and start a climb that could be remembered for years, if not decades to come.

Whether or not one of rugby league’s greatest fairytales gets to be written this year will be decided by games like this one.

Personally, I like to dream.Tip: Panthers by 18

NIGHT FULL OF LEGENDS

The Masked Panther

» Congratulations to everyone at Pan-thers who was involved in putting on last Saturday night’s 50th anniversary gala dinner. It was a sensational night, highlighted by the induction of four club legends into the new Panthers Hall of Fame – 1960s trailblazer Grahame Moran, 1991 premiership winning captain Greg Alexander, two-try grand final hero Royce Simmons and 2003 premiership winning captain Craig Gower. All four men spoke with raw emotion when accepting the honour, showing just how much it meant to them to be the inaugural inductees. One of the other highlights of the night was league guru David Middleton’s de-tailed history of the Panthers, which gave attendees a tremendous insight into the proud club.

» The Panthers have taken enormous strides in the way they connect with fans in recent years, and the latest sensational innovation is live streaming. Not only has the club been live streaming reserve grade matches, but the Panthers website also carried a stream of the gala dinner last Saturday night. Traditionally events such as this and the pre and post season

functions have been reserved for spon-sors and those closely connected with the club, but now fans have the opportunity to be more involved. I heard only positive things about the quality of the stream, which was hosted by Nine personality Tim Gilbert.

» It was interesting to note the presence of some former club Chairmen at the gala dinner – including Barry Walsh and Don Feltis, both of whom have dedicated much of their lives to the Panthers. What was perhaps a little odd was their seating position – both Mr Walsh and Mr Feltis were at the very back of the room.

» The Panthers narrowly avoided a major embarrassment when it came to the gala dinner guest list, with veteran ground an-nouncer Scott McRae only asked to come along 24 hours before the event. How McRae was left off the invite list initially is a mystery – he has been one of the constants in a period of change at Penrith and has performed his role with pride for some 20 seasons.

» Nathan Cleary’s new contact with

the Panthers has removed a clause that would have allowed him to leave and follow his father to another NRL club. The clause was in Cleary’s previous contract, but the 18-year-old superstar in the mak-ing will now go it alone.

» Brent Naden came to the Panthers with much fanfare a couple of years ago but he’s now been quietly released, and is playing for Mounties in the Intrust Super Premiership.

» There’s some talk around that Panthers centre Waqa Blake is being targeted by Super Rugby franchise the Western Force. Blake actually lived in Perth for several years and was spotted playing footy there by the Panthers, so a move west wouldn’t be a huge change for him. The 2015 City Origin representative is off-contract at the end of next season.

» Phil Gould has ended his self-imposed Twitter ban, returning to social media last weekend.

» English international fullback Zak Hardaker has joined the Panthers on a

deal until the end of the 2016 season. “This is truly exciting for the Panthers to have a current English international joining the club for the remainder of the 2016 season,” Panthers Executive General Manager, Phil Gould said. “Zak is an outstanding footballer. With long term injuries to our Kiwi international centres Dean Whare and Peta Hiku, Zak’s arrival at the club is very timely indeed. Zak wants to prove himself in the NRL com-petition and may well consider a longer stint in Australia if all goes well. It will be a fantastic experience for Zak and for the Panthers.” Hardaker arrived in Sydney on Tuesday night.

» A “Talk Bus” that will travel to com-munity events, local shops and sport-ing fixtures will spearhead a campaign aimed at getting people more involved in the future planning of Sydney. The bus will be equipped with tablet computers linked to an interactive website where the community can have their say on what makes their neighbourhoods special. The bus will be making an appearance at the Panthers v Parramatta NRL game at Pep-per Stadium on Sunday, July 17.

After a season full of close games and heart stopping finishes, Penrith Panthers backrower Isaah Yeo believes his side are getting closer to what they want to be – a top team – if they continue to believe in themselves.

Penrith fans endured yet another down-to-the-wire finish last Friday night at Pepper Stadium, despite leading South Sydney by 14 points with a little under 10 minutes to go.

Speaking with Extra Time this week, Yeo said if his side can stop getting too comfortable when in the lead, they can be a force to be reckoned with.

“We are too nice to opposition teams when we get in front,” he said.

“The top teams would’ve probably scored another try or two against Souths the other night, instead we let two in and almost lost.

“We don’t want to keep doing that head-ing into the finals, so we’re training very hard to fix that.”

The 21-year-old Dubbo product has been another shining light for Penrith in 2016, playing incredibly consistent football.

With his 50th NRL game only a month away, Yeo said playing a large majority of the year at his favoured position has only strengthened his game.

“I feel pretty comfortable in the back-row, to be able to pinpoint myself on that left side and get a few combinations happening has been good,” he said.

“I’m stoked my 50 games is coming up, hopefully I can stay in the team the next few weeks and knock that up.

“When I hit 50 I also would’ve played 38 more games than my father did, so that’s all I can focus on really,” he laughed.

During the club’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Saturday night, Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould urged his troops to shock the competition and challenge for a premiership title this season instead of one in a few years time.

Yeo said it was very inspiring to hear his boss speak so publicly about the side with so much confidence.

“Gus has a lot of confidence in our team and we have a lot of confidence in ourselves. It’s good hearing the confidence he has in us and what Hook has in us too,” he said.

“I guess it’s a matter of us believing in ourselves and knowing that we can beat those better sides and make a run to the finals.”

Penrith will need to overcome an enthu-siastic Wests Tigers side this Saturday night to keep that run going.

Yeo said Penrith can’t take the 12th-placed Tigers for granted at ANZ Stadium.

“They are probably a little immature at the moment, similar to us teetering around eighth spot,” he said.

“We’re in for a tough game.”

IS THIS YOU?

FACE IN THE CROWD

with Brad Drew

I would like to congratulate Penrith Panthers on what has been a fantastic week for the club.

It started on Friday night with a win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs and, although there is still plenty of room for improvement for the Penrith side, I am sure the performances of young Nathan Cleary and Bryce Cartwright would be exciting not only the coaching staff but also the fans.

Saturday the St Marys Rugby League Club played host to the Penrith NSW Cup side who absolutely dominated the Newtown Jets in front of a jovial crowd who had been entertained earlier in the day by both the Sydney Shield and Ron Massey Cup teams of St Marys.

Jamie Soward along with Dylan Edwards were stand out performers for the Penrith side and, with NRL coach Anthony Griffin sitting in the stands watching on, I am sure it will only be a matter of time before a call up to first grade comes along.

To end what was already a fantastic weekend, the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner was held on the grounds of Panthers with some of the 1967 team in attendance along with the 1991 and 2003 premiership winning sides.

The event was also used to induct four Penrith players into the Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to Royce Simmons, Greg Alexander, Craig Gower and Gra-hame Moran on their induction.

It was a fantastic event for the club.

YES, FOOTY PLAYERS CAN

NEWS

Panthers reserve graders Andy Saunders and Andrew Heffer-nan swapped their jerseys for aprons last week, lending support to students compet-ing in the annual Panthers on the Prowl Nepean Schools Culinary Challenge.

Taking place in the kitchen of Outback Steakhouse in Penrith, Year 10 students from four local high schools – Nepean High, Kingswood High, Cranebrook High and Glenmore Park High – battled it out in a final cook-off, serving up some of the popular restaurant’s signature dessert dishes.

While the students were competing against one another for outright glory, Saunders and Heffernan were also battling against each other to see which Panther could plate up the ultimate sweet treat.

Speaking with Extra Time, Saun-ders, who enjoys to cook steak when he’s at home, was amazed at just what went on behind the scenes of his favourite local restaurant.

“When I’m not cooking at home I come to Outback Steakhouse to eat, it’s one of my favourite places to eat in Penrith,” the damaging forward said.

“It was very interesting to witness how the cooks prepare and how much work goes into each dish, which I wasn’t really aware of.”

Heffernan, who has missed much of the season

t h r o u g h injury, stressed desserts weren’t his specialty.

“We had to prepare desserts, which usually aren’t my thing – the students definitely showed us up there,” he said.

But despite the speedy centre’s lack of dessert expertise, he managed to defeat

Saunders with the best looking and tast-ing dessert.

“It was a lot of fun to be a part of,” Heffer-nan said.

“I’m glad I won.”But the real winner of the day was King-

s w o o d H i g h

student Brianna Lambourne, who topped

the students with the outright judges vote.

For her efforts, Brianna took home a $100 Outback Steakhouse voucher and the title of 2016 Nepean Schools Culinary Chal-lenge champion.

Graham Collins from Panthers on the Prowl thanked proprietor Mike Hicks and Outback Steakhouse for once again lend-

ing their kitchen for the competition, now in its sixth year.

“We’re very appreciative because the competition gives kids an awareness

of the careers they can have in the food industry,” he said.

Panthers on the Prowl continues to grow in

awareness as the community develop-

ment arm of the Panthers NRL team.

It is involved with students on a whole variety of levels, preparing them for the workforce, further education and life in general

once their schooling comes to an end in a

few years’ time.

WRECKING BALL RETURNS EARLY

Penrith fans received a real treat one hour before kick-off last Friday night when it was announced that young Kiwi star James Fisher-Harris was a late inclusion into the Panthers line-up against South Sydney.

The 20-year-old was initially due to be sidelined for six to eight weeks with a fractured thumb but returned way ahead of schedule to the delight of the home crowd.

Despite the Panthers getting home by a narrow two points, the forward enjoyed a fairly quiet return with just 21 metres from

28 minutes of action. Speaking on Tuesday morning, Fisher-

Harris said he was excited to get back on the park earlier than planned.

“I got the clearance on Monday and told the physio I’m good to go and he organised it for me to play,” he said.

“It worked out I only missed two games because we had two byes during that time as well.

“I’m feeling good and the thumb pulled up well. It was good to be back.”

Fisher-Harris said he’s hoping for a better performance against the Wests Tigers this Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.

“We are in a good space now, we just have to train hard this week and hopefully get the win on the weekend,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fisher-Harris threw his weight behind Panthers teammate Bryce Cartwright regarding his chances for State of Origin III.

Fisher-Harris demanded Cartwright be a Blue for the dead rubber on July 13.

“He’s a good player, he can do anything pretty much,” he said.

“I think NSW need something and that something might be him.

“I certainly reckon he should be there – he can do anything!”

NEWS

Penrith will play the final game of the 2016 NRL regular season after being scheduled to tackle Manly on Sunday, September 4 at Pepper Stadium.

The NRL released sched-uling details of the final six

rounds of the competition last week, with the Panthers and Sea Eagles to complete the season with a Sunday night encounter.

There will be a host of night games to finish the season at Pepper Stadium with the Panthers to tackle the Roosters at 7pm on Monday, August 8 in round 22 and the Tigers on Friday, August 19 at 7.50pm in round 24.

In round 21 the Panthers travel to

Mount Smart Stadium to play the Warriors in a 3pm Saturday game (July 30) while round 23 sees the Panthers travel to Newcastle to take on the lowly Knights in the 2pm Sunday slot (August 14).

Penrith’s final away game of the season is against the Titans in round 25 on Saturday, August 27 at 5.30pm.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said the final six rounds would provide some crucial match-ups.

“We know there will be huge interest in those rounds as the teams battle for a place in the Finals,” he said.

“We are no doubt headed for another close finish. As usual this is a competi-tion which will likely keep us all guess-ing until the very last match.”

The finalrun home

The Panthers sprung a surprise on fans ahead of last Friday night’s game against the Rabbitohs, announcing to the crowd that winger Josh Mansour had re-signed with the club.

The New South Wales Origin representative will remain a Panther until at least the end of the 2018 NRL season.

The 26-year-old winger has played 77

games and scored 39 tries since making his NRL debut for the Panthers in 2012.

Panthers boss Phil Gould said he hoped Mansour would play out the rest of his career with the club.

“It is wonderful to have Josh on board for another two seasons and to be honest I hope he’s here for the rest of his playing career,” Gould said.

“Josh has been fantastic for our club and is one of the most popular individ-uals with our players and members.”
