The invitation card is a written paper or electronic image that is sent to people for different occasions. The message informs a receiver about an event to which he is invited. Invitation cards can be customized (different sizes, colors, themes, materials, fonts and folding designs) and made out of multiple materials (paper, tissue, textile, plastic).

Cultural Note

• Invitations often require a person to RSVP as to whether or not they will attend an event.

• R.S.V.P. stands for a French phrase, "répondez, s'il vous plaît," which means "please reply." The person sending the invitation would like you to tell him or her whether you accept or decline the invitation. That is, will you be coming to the event or not? Etiquette rules followed in most Western cultures require that if you receive a formal, written invitation, you should reply promptly, perhaps that same day.

Page 32: F UNTASTIC E NGLISH

In the advertisement, announcement, and invitation, we can find imperative sentence.

Imperatives are verbs used to give orders, commands, warning or instructions, and (if you use "please") to make a request.

In the advertisement above, we can find imperative expression:• Look no further. • So come on down to Frontier Furniture.

Note that an imperative sentence does not require a subject; the pronoun "you" is implied.

Page 33: F UNTASTIC E NGLISH

Although you find the word “please” in the expression, and you consider it as a request , the main idea is a command.

So you know now that the word “please” makes a command into a request.

Cultural Note

Page 34: F UNTASTIC E NGLISH

• Write your own advertisement,

announcement, and invitation based

on your own topic.

• List important information on the

topic (what it is about, when and

where it happened, etc.).

• Arrange the important information

you have got to write the

advertisement, announcement, and

invitation .

short functional text.
