What To Do With Blessed Palm Branches?

With the conclusion of the Easter season, you may be wondering what to do with the palm branches that we used to mark the beginning of Holy Week. Since they are blessed at Palm Sunday Mass, these branches or fronds serve as a sacramental, an item meant to draw us closer to the celebration of the seven sacraments. The branches can be used in reverent decoration in the home, or disposed of by being buried in the ground or burned, with the ashes spread on the ground.!You can also place palms in the baskets under the tables of the church entries by June 24, and the liturgy committee will reverently dispose of them for you.!

From the Pastor!!

!We recently received the news of the resignation of a mem-ber of our parish staff, Jessica Hert, who has served as our parish’s Receptionist and Administrative Assistant to our staff. We thank Jessica for her fine service to the parish and wish her well with her new endeavors! The position in which Jessica served is such an important role!being the first voice and face of the parish to our visitors and members alike. With the change of staff, we have also taken the occasion to consider how the role is structured and how it best can respond to the needs of our parish. So, if you might be interested in this fulltime position (3236 hours/week) or know someone who might be, information is available on our par-ish website, through indeed.com or through the parish office. We would particularly appreciate your encouraging an application by anyone who you think might do well for the position!!

!Our Cedar Valley Catholic Schools made the news this last week as the result of an overayearlong process that has been underway to assess the best functioning of our school system and how we can provide the highest quality Catholic School education for our youth. I reproduce the news release that followed our Board’s meeting to communicate clearly the results of the Board’s deliberation of the near future of the structuring of our schools:!

STATEMENT REGARDING THE JUNE 7 BOARD MEETING

!

Last night, Cedar Valley Catholic Schools (CVCS) held its monthly Board meeting. This meeting received much attention in the com-munity and in the media due to the nature of the agenda. After much deliberation, discussion and careful review, the Board voted last night to leave Sacred Heart School open for the 201819 school year with grade sharing determined by current enrollments between all elementary buildings, with transportation provided when needed.!

What does this mean? This means that for the 201819 school year, CVCS will continue to operate all five buildings. However, due to enrollment and space issues, consolidation of some classes across some elementary schools may take place. For example, for the 201819 school year preschool programs at Sacred Heart and Blessed Sacrament will remain combined into one location at Blessed Sacrament. This is to more efficiently utilize our space and resources, while continu-ing to provide a quality Catholic education. We have a responsibil-ity to be good fiscal stewards of our schools, and finances must be taken into consideration. Any decisions on other classes affected will be determined in the next few weeks and will be communicat-ed to CVCS families.!

What’s next for CVCS?The Board will continue to review the facilities study and establish a clear communication process over the next few months. The facilities study provided by ISGStruxture provides guidance and options for consideration with all CVCS buildings. Additionally, other factors will also be discussed, including financial sustainabil-ity, staffing, enrollment numbers and available space. These will be taken into consideration, as next steps are determined.!

In closing, the Board will continue to review all options for a sus-tainable CVCS for years to come. The Board is very optimistic about all of the possibilities for Cedar Valley Catholic Schools, and how they can help shepherd the future of Catholic education in the Cedar Valley while taking into account the best interests of all CVCS students and families. Let us all take a moment to prayerful-ly consider how we can each positively contribute to advancing our Catholic school community in the months ahead.

!

Let’s continue to pray for our schools and the deliberations of our Board and other administrators!!

!

Have a joyful week!!Fr. Scott Bullock!

An Evangelizing Community Brett Rauzi, Pastoral Associate!!

As the school year comes to an end, graduations wrap up, and the temperature outside remains consistently warm (or hot!), we begin to settle into the pace of a new summer. As we settle into this new season, we have also settled now into the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which we will continue in all through the Summer and upcoming Fall.!!

Often times, it seems to me that we don’t focus as much on Ordinary Time as we do on other seasons of our Church year. This is, perhaps, in large part because the other litur-gical seasons have a clearer focus to us. For example, we know that Lent is the forty day period in which we prepare ourselves to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter. We know that Easter is the fifty day season in which we celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection. These seasons have a shorter number of days, and a rather clear focus. But what are we supposed to make of Ordinary Time?!!

There are two temptations when looking at Ordinary Time. The first is to be deceived by the name given the season (ORDINARY Time), and think that this is a season of some-what less importance than the others. The other temptation is to view Ordinary Time as the sort of “filler” material that comes in between the other Church seasons.!!

A college professor of mine once remarked “Ordinary Time is anything but ordinary!” Do not be deceived by the name we give this season. The weeks of Ordinary Time are of pivotal importance as we journey through the liturgical year. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops tells us: “The Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time take us through the life of Christ. This is the time of conversion. This is the time of living the life of Christ.” !!

As the Bishops tell us, as we journey through the weeks and Sundays of Ordinary Time, we hear in Scripture of the teachings and ministry of Jesus throughout the three year period that he traveled through what we now call the Holy Land. As we hear these teachings, hear once again of the miracles he performed, we are called then to, as the Bish-ops tell us, live the life of Christ…to take these teachings and live them in our own lives.!!

The Bishops tell us further:!“Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the So-lemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.”!!

As we settle into this summer, and settle into these weeks of Ordinary time, I encourage you to take these summer months as an opportunity for growth and maturation in your faith. Don’t let these weeks of Ordinary Time be ordinary! This is the time of conversion. This is the time of living the life of Christ!!!

Reflect this week:!! As you enter into summer, what is

one concrete step you can take to

make sure your faith remains a part of

your summer plans? (For example, if

you are traveling, look up a nearby

Church and Mass schedule.) !

Enjoy Waterloo: Summer Calendar ! Let’s enjoy each other’s company and experience our beautiful town this summer. All events are family friendly.
