    I. 2008: The Year That Facebook Went Global

    2008 will be remembered as the year that Facebook exploded internationally.

    While Facebook's non-US audience was only 34 million people at the beginning of 2008, onthe first day of 2009 that number had increased to 95 million - nearly 70% of the total

    Facebook audience.

    Europe and Latin America in particular saw tremendous Facebook growth. As a whole, Facebook's European audience

    increased 205% from 16.7 million to 51.2 million, and Facebook's South American audience increased over 1,600% from under 1

    million to over 13 million. Check out a few of these examples:

    Italy - up 2,900% from under 1 million to over 5.5 million in 2008 Argentina - up 2,600% from 0.2 million to over 2.1 million in 2008 Australia - up 100% from 2.2 million to over 4.3 million in 2008

    What's more is that dozens of these markets are still growing at double digit rates every month - and for many, those

    growth rates are increasing. Facebook's growth rate accelerated by at least 25% in 47 countries in Q4 2008 over Q3. Its quarterly

    growth rate more than doubled in 28 of those countries in Q4.

    As of the beginning of 2009, Facebook now reaches over 10% of the national population in 26 countries. And in December

    alone, there were 20 countries in which at least 1% of the total population joined Facebook. Now translated into over 100

    languages, Facebook has shown that it can penetrate over one third of the entire national population in many developed markets,

    and we expect this to be true of many more countries in the near future. As a result, we believe massive opportunities exist for

    developers and marketers to reach and engage the Facebook audience in these rapidly expanding markets.

    What can this kind of global, cross-cultural growth be attributed to? Lets examine three factors:

    1) The most dominant reason, and perhaps the most untold story of 2008, is the incredible success of Facebooks

    proprietary crowd-sourced Translations tool. Unlike other web services, which manage the translation process ih

    house, Facebooks Translations application put the translation process into the hands of passionate users around

    the world. Collectively, they suggested and edited translations of every system word and phrase on Facebook.

    As a result, in the first year of the crowd-sourced translation program, Facebook has been fully translated into

    over 100 languages by native speakers at no marginal cost to the company. The importance of these translated

    versions in accelerating Facebooks international growth cannot be underestimated. Rarely before have services

    this young been available in so many native languages to such a large part of the worlds population.

    2) Another important factor is the cross-cultural acceptance of Facebook as a new kind of communication tool. In

    many cases, new web sites and services fail to gain traction in different global cultures because of differingvalues or behavior patterns that affect the way the service is experienced. However, because the core

    mechanics of Facebook are so fundamentally oriented around new kinds of simple communication patterns, it

    has (apparently) been much less susceptible to cultural peculiarities.

    3) A third factor is Facebooks apparent brand reputation in some countries as a way to participate in American

    culture. (We will be doing more research on possible variations in cultural use patterns in the months ahead.)
