Location of rooms (ground floor…or stable flooring)

Guidelines Organization

General types of equipment (cardio, weight, stretch,safety)

Safety is top priority!!!

Layout method 1…Utilizes more facility space 

Cluster weight equipment based on body part

Designate areas for cardio, stretching, body weight exercise Layout method 2…More efficient use of space 

Divide into areas according to equipment type

Equipment Placement Guidelines Spotting & power exercises = away from

mirrors/windows

Tall & DB racks = along wall RT circuit = ordered for large muscles first

 Aerobic = upright behind low to ground

 All equipment at least 6 inches from mirrors

Separate areas for stretching, circuit, free weights,Olympic lifting, aerobic & group instruction

Traffic f low: around perimeter, walkways bisect,unobstructed pathway (stipulated by law)

Equipment Spacing Guidelines Safety & functionality!!!

User space = space to adequately perform an exercise

safely  Safety space cushion = space between equipment for

access and traffic flow (3-4 feet)

 ADA compliance = room for wheelchair access (at least

3 feet) NSCA text pp. 595-596 gives general

recommendations for spacing

Home Gym Layout Guidelines Safety First!!!

Equipment selection: usually more inexpensive types

Environment issues: Electrical outlets, accessibility,safety, lighting/air/flooring, noise, etc.

Layout: Method 2 = efficient use of f loor space

Machines & DB racks against wall

Cushion space is often reduced

25-49 sq. ft. for cardio/stretching area

Designated areas for weight training, cardio machines,flexibility, etc.

Power stations, squat racks & DB racks against wall

Equipment & cushion spacing ADA compliant

 At least 49 sq. ft. for any cardio/stretching area

Supervision area to see entire room
