GENERAL INFORMATION


ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

Georgia College is Georgia's designated public liberal arts university, offering undergraduate programs of study in an inviting residential college setting to students who are motivated to make a difference in the world. Community-

based learning is a common theme at the university; and the students, faculty and staff members of Georgia College collaborate with the communities of middle Georgia to provide invaluable educational experiences for our students and make enriching contributions to the local area and beyond. The university also provides graduate and professional studies, in Milledgeville and online, to students who are looking to advance their careers. Beginnings The school was founded in 1889 in Milledgeville, Georgia, as a public women’s educational center. First known as Georgia Normal & Industrial College, the university also has been named Georgia State College for Women, the Women's College of Georgia, Georgia College and, since 1996, Georgia College & State University. Accreditation Georgia College & State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate degrees. Colleges Georgia College has programs of study in four colleges – the College of Arts and Sciences, the J. Whitney Bunting College of Business, the John H. Lounsbury College of Education and the College of Health Sciences. Class Sizes As Georgia’s designated public liberal arts university, small classes that give ample opportunity for individual student attention are common. Most class sections enroll between 15 and 35 students. Seminars, tutorials and honors courses typically enroll 20 to 25 students with three faculty facilitators. Total Economic Impact Locally The economic impact of the university on a six-county region is calculated to be more than $290 million, according to a study released in 2020 by the University System of Georgia. Tuition and Fees Fiscal Year 20-21 Tuition and fees for a full-time undergraduate student who is a resident of the state of Georgia are $4,762 per semester. Out-of-state tuition for full-time undergraduate students is $14,352 per semester.

Vision, Values and Mission Vision Georgia College will be a nationally preeminent public liberal arts university. Values The Georgia College experience, which is rooted in the liberal arts and provides the foundation for a lifetime of learning, growth and academic excellence, is based on these shared values: • The pursuit of knowledge and truth for the public good; • The transformative effect of service, leadership and

collaborative engaged learning experiences both in and beyond the classroom;

• Ethical principles including integrity, altruism, reason, respect and responsibility in discourse and actions;

• Diversity and inclusion in all forms. Mission Georgia College is the state’s only designated public liberal arts university.

Strategic Directions 2016 – 2021 On Nov. 9, 2015, President Dorman charged the Strategic Planning Steering Committee and the chairs of the 13 subcommittees with the task of developing a strategic plan to position Georgia College for preeminence as a public liberal arts institution. Each strategic planning subcommittee was asked to address the question: What would have to happen to make Georgia College the preeminent public liberal arts institution in the future? An overarching projection of the scenario in 10 years (2025) was provided to the subcommittees, and the subcommittees were asked to consider this possible future while preparing a strategic plan to serve the university from 2016-2021. As a result of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee’s work, the following Goals and Initiatives were proposed: Goal 1: Recruit, admit, enroll, retain and graduate highly-qualified and diverse undergraduate students. Goal 2: Develop and implement distinctive and transformative undergraduate curricular and co-curricular experiences. Transformative experiences include but are not limited to: undergraduate research; creative projects; study abroad; service learning; community-based learning; leadership development; diversity and global learning; and field and clinical-based practica, apprenticeships, preceptorships and internships.


Goal 3: Offer a limited number of exceptional quality graduate programs that are highly relevant to workforce demand and supportive of the university mission. Goal 4: Align resources through generation, redirection, prioritization, cost containment and stewardship to address strategic priorities. Goal 5: Enhance a professional environment that encourages the recruitment, retention and success of an exemplary and diverse faculty and staff.

Goal 6: Strengthen community and regional ties through service, research, programs and partnerships that enhance economic, educational and cultural opportunities to improve the quality of life for citizens of Milledgeville/Baldwin County and the middle Georgia region.

Athletics 2019-20 Points of Pride

GC Softball’s Amber Coy was named a semifinalist •for the Wooden Cup Award and a Peach Belt Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year. GC Softball Senior Amber Coy and GC Volleyball •junior Libby Bochniak both earned Academic All-America status; Bochniak was the first in Bobcat Volleyball history. Tessa Allen became the fifth women’s runner in •school history to earn All-Region status, taking 17th place at the NCAA Southeast Regional race. GC student-athletes are #1 in the USG with NCAA •Federal Graduation Rates at 87% (last year) and #1 in the USG over the last four class average at 74% Georgia College had two winners of the PBC Elite -•15 Award for top GPA at a sport’s conference championship tournament: Shawn Olmstead from men’s cross country and Rebecca Lawrence from softball Rebecca Lawrence from softball was named •Valedictorian for graduation in May, the sixth for GC Athletics in the last six years. GC student-athletes Federal Graduation Rate is •higher than the student body The Bobcat Athletic teams posted a school-record •3.28 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year, with every one of the teams coming in at a 3.0 or above for the second-straight season.
